Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Dames Club originated in 1896 at Harvard University. As people moved on from Harvard to pursue other job interests and advanced degrees they spread the organization throughout the country. In 1921 the National Constitution for the National Association of University Dames was ratified. Indiana University joined the organization on 11 May 1931. Members and associate members primarily consisted of the wives of graduate students, faculty members' wives, and married female students.

Scope and Content:

The Officers and Members series contains lists of board members and members throughout the years. This series also includes information on the duties that each board member had to perform while they were in office.

The Publication series consists of Dames booklets and the National Association of University Dames Yearbooks (NAUD). Along with the booklets and the yearbooks, there is also an article that was published by the Indiana Daily Student newspaper that criticized the Dames for having an award called Putting Hubby Through (P.H.T.).

The Activities and Informational series has information about the variety of activities and events that were organized by and for the members of the club.

The Certificates and Awards series include examples of the controversial Dames P.H.T. award and the student scholarship that was given out to some of the Dames members.

The Publicity series has a few flyers that the club posted around campus to publicize their meetings or upcoming events. This section also contains a few newspaper clippings and a NAUD newsletter.

The Budget series has information concerning fiscal management of various club events. Also present are some papers about budget preparation.
