Background

Biographical / Historical:

Frustration from the growing number of assaults on women led to the development of Women's Wheels in the late 1970s, providing women with free transportation when it was dark and they felt unsafe. In 1981, the IU Student Association took over the program and expanded the service so it could accommodate more riders; eventually IUSA also added a Walking Escort Service. The program is funded through the student activity fee that every IU student pays.

In the early 1990s, there was some controversy about whether or not the service should also be available to male students and staff. After much debate, the service was made available to men in 1994. About that same time, the program name was changed to the Safety Escort Service. The service is still available today.
