Background

Biographical / Historical:

The office of the Dean of Women was created in 1901. The first dean was Mary Bidwell Breed, an assistant professor of Chemistry at Indiana University, who served as dean from 1901 until 1906. The duties of the Dean of Women covered all aspects of women student's lives, including academic work, social activities, health issues, and moral behavior. A significant responsibility of the office was to help women students find adequate housing in the Bloomington area since the first university-administered women's dormitory did not open until 1925. Mary Bidwell Breed's tenure as Dean of Women was followed by Louise Goodbody (1906-1911), Carrie DeNise (1911-1914), Ruby E. Mason (1914-1918), Agnes E. Wells (1918-1937), and Kate Hevner Mueller (1938-1946). The office of Dean of Women effectively ended on June 13, 1946 when the position became the Assistant Dean of Students under the newly created office of Dean of Students.

Scope and Content:

The Dean of Women records are organized in a single series, Administrative files, and are arranged chronologically and then alphabetically by subject or surname. The records span the entirety of the office's existence. The first two files of the collection contain the oldest materials, primarily copies of reports and newspaper clippings pulled together for Burton Dorr Myer's History of Indiana University. The remainder of the collection contains correspondence spanning the period from 1917 to 1951. The small amount of later Mueller correspondence covers the time when the Dean of Women's Office had already been dissolved, and she was serving as the Assistant Dean of Students.

Some correspondence topics include housing, war preparations & organizations, scholarships, and student affairs, particularly as they related to the coeds. A number of folders in the collection are restricted due to the nature of the records. These folders are indicated and are placed at the end of the collection.

In 2011, form letters and annual reports spanning 1923-1938 were discovered. Rather than interfiling them throughout the boxes, these were inserted at the end of the collection in Box 20.
