Background

Biographical / Historical:

Robert Cochran started his career at IU in 1964 as an assistant in the Budgetary Planning and Preparation Office, which now is known as the University Budget Office. In 1972, he became the assistant business manager for the Bloomington Campus and served in this capacity until 1981, when he was appointed Director of Administration and Assistant to the Vice President under the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Bloomington Chancellor, Kenneth R. R. Gros Louis.

As Director of Administration and Assistant to the Vice President, Cochran served as a liaison between the Vice President Gros Louis and units on the IUB campus. During his time in the Chancellor's office, he helped establish a strong working relationship between the office and university-wide administrative areas. For this work, in 2005 he was recognized with the university's highest staff honor, the E. Ross Bartley Award.

Cochran retired in 2000 after serving in the Chancellor's Office for 19 years and Indiana University for 35 years.

Scope and Content:

The Indiana University Director of Administration and Assistant to the Vice President's records are organized into two series, Administrative files and University assessment.

The first series, Administrative files (1980-1998, undated), is arranged alphabetically by folder title. These materials primarily focus on the implementation of reviews of non-degree granting units. There are also organizational charts of the various units on the IU campuses and also organizational charts of other U.S. universities.

The second series, University assessment (1979-1999, undated), consists of documentation stemming from the reviews of the non-degree granting units of the IUB campus. This series is organized into two subseries, Reviews and Reports. The Reviews subseries are the actual reviews of the non-degree units and are organized alphabetically by unit name. The Reports subseries contains the final findings for the unit reviews and is arranged alphabetically.
