Background

Biographical / Historical:

The American Studies Program was established at Indiana University in the fall of 1965. The motivation for a program first developed from an invitation to join the American Studies Association in 1960. Consequently, a committee was established to design an American Studies Program. Under the direction of Robert Gunderson, a member of the speech and theatre faculty, a graduate program was established with a strong interdisciplinary approach to the study of American culture and the role of the United States in a hemispheric context. As the chief interdisciplinary program in the arts and humanities, the American Studies Program includes contributions from the Departments of History, Religious Studies, English, Communications and Culture, and African American Studies. Although the American Studies Program initially consisted solely of masters and Ph. D. programs, the Board of Trustees authorized a Bachelor of Arts degree in the program in November of 2006.

Scope and Content:

The records of the American Studies Program are organized into two series, Conference and programming files (1980-2005), and Subject files (1968-2007).

Within the first series, Conference and programming files, the first subseries, American Studies Sponsored Lectures (1983-2005), is arranged alphabetically by folder title. It consists of fliers, articles, correspondence, itineraries, and programs related to lectures, conferences, workshops, seminars, and exchange programs sponsored by AMST.

The second subseries, American Studies Seminar, Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia (1982-1991), is arranged chronologically. It consists of correspondence between Indiana University faculty and faculty in Yugoslavia, as well as conference programs, schedules, and descriptions of workshops.

The third subseries, Exchange programs (1980-1997), is arranged alphabetically by folder title. It consists of correspondence and records relating to a number of exchange programs between Indiana University and other universities in Germany, Poland, and Romania (among others).

The fourth subseries, General (1980-2004), is arranged alphabetically by folder title. It contains files on select conferences and programs in which the American Studies Program was involved.

The second series, Subject files (1968-2007), is arranged alphabetically by folder title and consists of Indiana University American Studies Program newsletters, newspaper articles on the program and its faculty, alumni awards, and audio/visual items.
