Summary

Creator:
University Club (Indiana University, Bloomington)
Abstract:
The University Club was established at Indiana University in 1959 by combining four older Indiana University clubs: the Men's Faculty Club (established in 1912), the University Women's Club (originally titled the Faculty Women's Club when established in 1913, renamed in 1959), the Women's Faculty Club (established in 1923), and the Newcomer's Club (originally part of the University Women's Club). From 1959 until 1988, the University Club acted as an umbrella organization for the four separate clubs it contained. In this structure each individual club pursued its own programs and also participated in University Club programs. Starting in 1989, however, all programs developed by the four separate clubs have been listed under the rubric of the University Club and have been open to all members of the University Club. The goals of the University Club are to organize and implement social and cultural events.

Background

Biographical / Historical:

The University Club was formed in 1959 by combining four older Indiana University clubs: (1) the Men's Faculty Club (established in 1912), (2) the University Women's Club (originally titled the Faculty Women's Club when first established in 1913, renamed in 1959), (3) the Women's Faculty Club (established in 1923), and the Newcomer's Club (originally part of the University Women's Club).

The purpose of the University Club is to organize social and cultural events such as dinners, dances, picnics, theater and opera parties, lectures, and receptions for distinguished visitors to the campus. Membership is open to Indiana University professors, instructors, full-time lecturers, librarians, administrative officials, part-time faculty members that are not Indiana University degree candidates, visiting faculty, and spouses of members.

Scope and Content:

The University Club collection has been divided into three series: Administrative records, Publications, and Scrapbook.

The first series consists of administrative records from the University Club. These records cover the years from 1959-1990 and are arranged alphabetically by subject. This series contains minutes and programs, financial information, and membership records.

The second series contains publications of the University Club. They span the period from 1960-2021 and are arranged chronologically. This series consists of Yearbooks and Newsletters. The publications in the series give news of events for the University Club and its related groups, the Men's Faculty Club, the Women's Faculty & Staff Club, and the University Women's Club. The Yearbooks contain lists of the officers and board of directors, honorary members, past presidents, and members of the University Club, and also include the constitution and bylaws. The Newsletters list new members.

The third series consists of a large scrapbook for the years 1969-1971, which contains photographs and newspaper clippings documenting University Club events, such as society teas, lectures, and events such as "Gloriana Indiana," a historical musical drama that relates to the early IU history, and the Mardi Gras Event in 1971 that was held to honor the new president John W. Ryan.
