Background

Biographical / Historical:

Serious discussions about the formation of a campus support center for gays and lesbians began in the late 1980s. A task force was appointed in 1990 to gather information on such a center, and after three years of research members of the task force submitted a report formally recommending that such an office be created.

In the fall of 1994, the Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Support Services office opened amidst both support and controversy. Doug Bauder, who is gay and an ordained minister, was hired to be the coordinator of the office. Bauder has held the position since its opening. Transgender would not be added to the office's name until 1997. In January 2017, the name was changed to the LGBTQ+ Culture Center to be more inclusive.

The LGBTQ+ Culture Center, formerly known as the GLBT Support Services, strives to be a resource center for all members of the Indiana University campus, not just those who fall under the GLBT label. The office contains a library of materials that focus on GLBT issues. It also serves as a center of education, collaboration, and networking for those interested in the GLBT community and promoting diversity on campus.

Scope and Content:

This collection contains the records of the LGBTQ+ Culture Center, formerly known as the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Student Support Services (GLBTSSS) office. The records span the years from 1970 to 2019. This collection is organized in to five series: Program files, Conferences,Groups, Administrative files, and Scrapbooks.

The first series, Program files (1989-2018), is further organized into two sub-series: Campus programs & activism and Speakers and events. The Campus programs & activism (1989-2018) sub-series is organized alphabetically and is comprised of materials that relate to GLBT programming and support at Indiana University. This sub-series is differentiated from that of Speakers and events in that these programs and task forces were typically more long-term, or were created to address specific issues existing on campus. This sub-series also includes information on the Educational Task Force on Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Concerns, which was the initial group that evaluated the need for a GLBT Student Support Services office. Additionally, this sub-series contains information on the Peer Support Project, which involves GLBT students serving as mentors for other GLBT students on campus that may be struggling with their sexuality. The Speakers and Events (1990-2018) sub-series is arranged chronologically and contains correspondence and publicity material related to the appearance of GLBT affiliated speakers and to other events that occurred at or near Indiana University.

The second series, Conferences (2001-2019), is arranged alphabetically and contains information on conferences that the LGBTQ+ Culture Center were participants. The conferences included are the Indiana Association for College Admissions Counseling Conference (IACAC), the Indiana Student Affairs Association Conference (ISAA), the Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Ally College Conference (MBLGTACC), and the Sexual Minority Youth in the Heartland Conference (SMYHL). The latter two conferences were hosted by Indiana University. The materials included are correspondence, bid proposals, contracts, budgets, administrative records, grant and scholarship information, planning materials, programs, and evaluations. Records from the SMYHL conference comprise the bulk of this series, and since this conference was hosted by IU twice, these records are further arranged by conference year.

The third series, Groups (1993-2019), is further organized into two sub-series: Alumni Association and Student Groups. The Alumni Association (1993-2019) sub-series is organized alphabetically and is comprised of materials related to the LGBTQ+ Culture Center's Alumni Association. The materials included are administrative records, correspondence, meeting minutes from the Alumni Association's board meetings, membership materials, and newsletters published by the Alumni Association. The Student Groups (1995-2017) sub-series is organized alphabetically and contains materials related to various student groups. The groups represented are AA, Anti-Harassment Team, Global Talks, Incidents Team, OUT, Queer Info Share, Rainbow Cycling, Sexploration, Sigma Phi Beta, and Trans Advocacy Group. Some of the materials included are administrative materials, correspondence, pamphlets, flyers, and reports.

The fourth series, Administrative files (1970-2019), is arranged alphabetically and contains materials related to the administrative functions of the LGBTQ+ Culture Center. The series is organized into two sub-series: General and Renovation. The General sub-series includes materials such as annual reports of the office, campus climate assessments,GLBT campus harassment incident reports, papers related to the history and mission of the office, advisory board meeting minutes, office-related correspondence, information on two GLBT themed classes that were taught at IU, student papers, publications, and other administrative files. The sub-series Renovation contains materials related to the renovation of the LGBTQ+ Culture Center's office. The materials include correspondence, blue prints, interior design details, photographs, and articles.

The fifth series, Scrapbooks (1994-2019), is arranged chronologically. These scrapbooks include newspaper clippings, programs, memorabilia, and fliers that highlight LGBTQ+ issues and events on campus, in the local area, in the state, and in the nation. Also included are photos from the GLBT SSS/LGBTQ+ Culture Center office and a scrapbook commemorating the 20th anniversary of the office.
