Background

Biographical / Historical:

Robert V. Ruhe was born in 1918 in Chicago Heights. Before obtaining his doctoral degree in geology from the University of Iowa in 1950, Ruhe played semi-professional baseball. In 1942, he was offered a tryout with the Chicago White Sox. However, with World War II going on, Ruhe joined the Marine Corps and served as an aviator.

In 1970, Ruhe accepted a faculty position at Indiana University in the geology department. Once at IU, he also became the director of the Water Resources Research Center. This Center was established with the goal of integrating the diverse water research activities of Indiana University and coordinating them with the water programs of state and federal agencies, other academic institutions, and private organizations.

Ruhe's research focused on geomorphology and hydrology. He was a recognized world-authority on soils and landscape evolution and was a recipient of the Kirk Bryan award for distinguished contribution to geomorphology. He published a well-received book entitled Geomorphology: Geomorphic Processes and Surficial Geology. Ruhe also served on numerous committees, including those of the National Research Council, Indiana State government, and the Indiana University geology department.

Ruhe was married to Barbara Ruhe, and they had three children and six great-grandchildren. Ruhe retired from Indiana University in 1985 and died in 1993.

Scope and Content:

This collection contains the personal papers of Robert V. Ruhe. The records span from 1952 to 1985, with the bulk of materials concentrated between 1970-1985. This collection is organized in to four series: Professional, Papers and publications, Correspondence, and Subject files.

The first series, Professional (1965-1985), is further organized into two sub-series: General (1965-1985) and Teaching files (1970-1984). The General sub-series is arranged alphabetically and is comprised of materials that relate to Ruhe's committees, activities in the geology department, conferences he attended, and retirement. The Teaching files sub-series is arranged topically and then alphabetically within each topic. Topics include: courses, graduate students, and the high school science student institute. Much of this sub-series is restricted due to records containing student grades.

The second series, Papers and publications (1970-1983), is arranged alphabetically. This series contains records pertaining to Ruhe's publications, including a publisher's copy of Ruhe's book, Geomorphology: Geomorphic Processes and Surficial Geology, along with copies of all of the images and figures contained in the publication. Mixed-in with copies of Ruhe's papers and publications is also correspondence related to the publications.

The third series, Correspondence (1967-1981), is arranged alphabetically and consists of general correspondence related to Ruhe's research interests and general geology related issues.

The final series, Subject files (1952-1985), is arranged alphabetically. This series contains a variety of records, including those pertaining to book reviews that Ruhe wrote, requests for literature, and a listing of the books in Ruhe's professional library.
