Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Indiana University Axolotl Colony was derived from the colony at the University of Buffalo, from which the axolotls were transferred to Bloomington in August 1957. The colony, located in the Department of Biology, was funded by the National Science Foundation as a Living Stock Collection under the Division of Biological Infrastructure. From the colony, axolotl embryos, larvae and adults were shipped to laboratories and classrooms around the world, primarily for genetic research. Axolotls have regenerative abilities and can regrow nerve cells, limbs, and possibly internal organs, which makes them useful in genetic research. In June 2005, the colony at Indiana University was transferred to the University of Kentucky.
