Abstract:
The Civic Leadership Development (CLD) was established at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in 1988. The goal of the CLD is to increase students' awareness of social challenges and issues through direct engagement in non-profits and the local community. The development of student leadership and business skills as well as professional networking is emphasized. The collection is largely comprised of administrative records, including annual reports, newsletters, organizational handbooks, and service project files.

Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Civic Leadership Development (CLD) program was established at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in 1988 in order to promote civic responsibility and citizenship among undergraduate business students. As of the mid-2000s, the CLD was staffed by a full-time staff member, full-time graduate student, and a CLD Board of Directors. Their mission is stated as, "The Civic Leadership Development Program helps Kelley students understand and appreciate philanthropy, good citizenship, and social responsibility."

The CLD works with a wide variety of organizations, but particularly emphasizes local community organizations such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters of South Central Indiana, American Red Cross Monroe County Chapter, Junior Achievement of Central Indiana, Monroe County YMCA, Stone Belt ARC, Inc, Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, United Way Community Services of Monroe County, Wonderlab, Monroe Citizen Corps Council, and the City of Bloomington. The CLD organizes student internships and agency and partners with the Alternative Spring Break (ASB) Program.

Scope and Content:

This collection is composed solely of administrative information about the Civic Leadership Development (CLD) at the Kelley School of Business at IU. It spans the beginning of the organization in 1988 to approximately 2011. Records include annual reports, organizational handbooks, service program information, promotional materials such as flyers and brochures are present, and a small assortment of newspaper clippings and printed articles about the organization. Also included are interdepartmental communications, applications, a functionality analysis, and records from the Basics undergraduate program.
