Background

Biographical / Historical:

Born in 1915 in Hartford, Wisconsin, David Grover Frey attended the University of Wisconsin for his education, earning his B.A. (1936), M.A. (1938), and Ph.D. (1940) degrees, all in zoology. After receiving his doctorate, Frey worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as an aquatic biologist in Seattle, Washington (1940-1942), and College Park, Maryland (1942-1945). Serving in the Navy at the end of World War II, Frey conducted field research on war damage in Guam and the Philippines. He then taught at the University of North Carolina from 1946-1950 as an associate professor of Zoology.

In 1950, Indiana University hired Professor Frey as an Associate Professor of Zoology before promoting him to Professor in 1955. Frey retired from IU in 1986.

Professor Frey specialized in limnology (aquatic ecology). He was also an authority on the Cladocera (water flea) and established a well-known laboratory at IU containing over 10,000 specimens related to that field (now housed by the Smithsonian in the Museum of Natural History). Widely recognized for his work in the field, Frey earned both Guggenheim and Fulbright fellowships to study lakes in Western Europe and Austria in 1953. He won the Fulbright again in 1985 to teach in Ireland. In 1962, he travelled to the Soviet Union as part of an exchange of scientists arranged by the National Academy of Sciences and the Soviet Academy of Sciences. He also served in leadership roles in several professional organizations, including as president of the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography and as founding editor of Limnology and Oceanography, and authored more than 150 articles.

Dr. Frey died April 1, 1992.

Scope and Content:

Consists of the personal papers of David G. Frey in three series: Biographical, Publications, and Research.

The Biographical series, 1937-1983, consists primarily of Frey's personal correspondence with his family as well as letters related to his work for the Fish and Wildlife Service. The series also contains extensive records relating to Frey's service in the Navy as well as records for an internal review of Indiana University's School of Fine Arts for which Frey served on the committee. This series also contains his wife's correspondence, primarily consisting of sympathy notes following Dr. Frey's passing in 1992.

The Publications series, 1939-1998, consists of reprints of almost all of Frey's publications, such as "What is Paleolimnology?" and "The taxonomy and biogeography of the Cladocera," organized chronologically and without marginalia.

The Research series, 1877-2000, which is the bulk of Frey's papers, consists of various research data and measurements from Trout Lake, Mann's Bog and from his foreign research, information related to Frey's numerous scholarly awards (including the Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellowship), correspondence with graduate students, and maps of every county in Indiana. Detailed notes about the care and maintenance of the IU Biological Station at Winona Lake from 1951-1952 are included as are clippings from when the biological station moved to Crooked Lake in 1964. There is copy of Frey's bibliography curriculum vitae (including posthumous publications) along with contact information for scientists with whom Frey communicated. A copy of Franz Ruttner's Fundamentals of Limnology, which Frey translated in 1953, is also included.

The collection also contains numerous photographs both taken by Frey and of Frey himself. Photos taken by Frey consist primarily of lakes and other areas he researched. There is a photograph of Frey in the Navy, at his 1982 high school class reunion, and dozens of photographs of Frey at work. There are also numerous postcards Frey collected during his time overseas as well as color slides from the Frey's personal vacations, including a trip to the Rocky Mountains. Photos are stored separately. Contact the Archives Photographs Curator for further information.
