Background

Biographical / Historical:

John Rau, the eighth dean of the School of Business (now the Kelley School of Business), graduated from Boston College in 1970, and went on to receive a master's degree in Business Administration from Harvard University in 1972. He then entered the banking industry where he quickly ascended the corporate ranks at First National Bank of Chicago and then at Exchange National Bank (later LaSalle National Bank). In 1983, he was appointed the president of the LaSalle, at 35 one of the youngest chief executives in nation among the top 100 national banks. He served in the post until 1991, when he left to become a visiting scholar at Northwestern University's J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management and concurrently served as Economic Development Advisor to the Illinois Governor in 1992 and 1993. He was appointed dean of the School of Business in 1993.

During Dean Rau's tenure, the School of Business was designated as a federally-funded Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) in 1994, one of 28 in the nation. That same year, the Global Program Office was established to spearhead the school's push into greater internationalization of its activities. The School of Business also saw its graduate programs expand with the introduction of two degrees, the Master of Professional Accountancy and the Master of Business Administration in Accounting The School also introduced M.B.A. Academies, which were intended to pair academic work to work experience in distinctive way, and of a field specialization option aimed at undergraduates. In order to boost faculty and staff productivity, Rau instituted incentive programs that promised salary increases for superior performance and increased cooperation among the departments and other ancillaries of the School.

In 1994, the M.B.A. program was ranked number 7 overall by BusinessWeek, and U.S. News and World Report ranked the Business Law Department fourth in the nation. In 1995, the undergraduate program was ranked number 7 by the U.S. News and World Report. In 1996, the School celebrated its 75th anniversary at the International Business Forum that year in Wiesbaden, Germany, with over 200 alumni and friends of the school in attendance.

Dean Rau resigned in the fall of 1996 and accepted the position of president and CEO of Chicago Title and Trust Co.
