Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Teaching Film Custodians became a membership corporation of the State University of New York in 1938. According to its original by-laws, the purpose of the company was to " advance and promote the scientific use of motion picture films for educational purposes…by cooperating with producers of motion pictures to further the educational value of motion picture films." The corporation provided excerpts and short films for use within schools and universities, mostly adaptations of novels and historical features. In the 1960's TFC added resources for foreign language education. TFC merged with Indiana University in 1973. Today, several of the TFC films can be found in the Indiana University Libraries Moving Image Archives.

Scope and Content:

This collection is organized into two series: Administrative files and Meeting minutes.

The Administrative files series contains information on the merger of TFC with Indiana University in 1973, including official agreements and press releases. Also included in this series is a folder containing correspondence from the files of Executive Director J. Stanley McIntosh, detailing the preparation of both parties for the merge. Before the merger could take place, several film companies, including Columbia and Warner Bros., were asked to transfer rights from TFC to Indiana University. A request for an audit of materials, as well as lists regarding the transfer and storage of hundreds of prints are among the records in this folder.

The Meeting minutes series contains minutes of various meetings spanning the period from 1938-1973. Each of the folders in this series contains minutes arranged separated by type of meeting and then arranged chronologically. The folder labeled 'Members' and Board of Trustees' Meeting Minutes 1938-1959 also contains Executive Committee Meeting minutes within the Members' section. The folder titled 'Members' Meeting Minutes 1967-1973 also contains a few joint Board of Directors and Members of the Corporation meeting minutes.
