Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Population Institute for Research and Training (PIRT) was founded at Indiana University in 1986 as a center for interdisciplinary population studies. The Institute was involved in collecting data resources related to demography, facilitating and supporting research projects, developing and publishing an ongoing working papers series, and offering courses and seminars related to demography. Through PIRT, PhD students could pursue a Minor Field in Population Studies.

The Center closed after Director George Alter retired in 2007.

Scope and Content:

This collection is organized into three series, each arranged in alphabetical order by folder label: Administrative files (1980-2002), Courses and seminars (1977-2001), and Research (1953-2002).

The Administrative files series contains records related to PIRT's various activities, including grant and fellowship information as well as planning files for two conferences: the Cause of Death Conference and the Eurasia Conference. Records span 1980 through 2002.

The next series, Courses and seminars, spans 1977-2001 and consists of records related to the various courses and seminars associated with PIRT such as International Perspectives on Population Problems; Family, Household, and Gender, and Economic Development & Growth. The files include seminar announcements and outlines, course syllabi, and curriculum information for the PhD Minor Field in Population Studies.

The final series, Research, 1953-2002, contains records of research activities supported by PIRT and includes the Cause of Death papers published in a special issue of Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences, and the papers of the Fertility Working Group. The majority of this series consists of records documenting the ongoing working papers series published by PIRT.
