Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Indiana University School of Music was founded as the Music Department in 1910 and became a school in 1921. Throughout much of its history, the School has been known for having one of the strongest music programs and best faculty in the nation and has been at the forefront of pioneering change in music education. In 2005, the school was renamed the Jacobs School of Music in honor of benefactors David H. and Barbara Jacobs.

David G. Woods became Dean of the School of Music in 1997. He received his bachelor of music from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas and his Master of Music and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Northwestern University. After receiving his degrees he went on to do research at Copenhagen Conservatory of Music and was a Senior Fulbright Scholar in Iceland in 1981. Woods is also a leading researcher on music childhood education and developed the first preschool through high school music curriculum design courses in the country at Colorado Academy in Denver, Colorado. Woods came to Indiana University after being the Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Oklahoma from 1991 to 1997.

During Woods's tenure tenure as Dean of the IU School of Music from 1997 to 1999, the School established its first web site, continued development of the burgeoning Variations program, and implemented a distance learning program. Upon departure from IU, Woods went on to become the Dean of the University of Connecticut's School of Fine Arts.
