Abstract:
William Hammond Mathers attended Bloomington (Ind.) High School in the early 1930s before attending Indiana University where he graduated in 1938 with his BA in Chemistry with High Honors. Mathers fell ill during his last few years at I.U. and passed away on September 5, 1938 after a long battle against cancer. This collection consists of William Mathers education related papers, notebooks, textbooks, and various coursework completed both at Bloomington High School and at Indiana University. Also included are a few travel journals kept by Mathers from 1936-1937.

Biographical / Historical:

Born in 1916 to Frank Curry Mathers (distinguished Chemistry Professor at Indiana University), and Maud (Bowser) Mathers, William Hammond Mathers attended Bloomington High School in the early 1930s before attending Indiana University where he graduated in 1938 with a BA in Chemistry with High Honors. William Mathers fell ill during his last few years at I.U. and passed away on September 5, 1938 after a long battle against cancer.

The Mathers Museum of World Cultures located on Indiana University's Campus was renamed as "The William Hammond Mathers Museum" in October of 1980 to honor both Frank C. Mathers and his late son.

Scope and Content:

This collection is organized into one Biographical series (1929-1940), which is further organized into three sub-series. The General sub-series (1936-1940) includes two of William's bank account books as well as two travel journals. The first journal begins in June 1936 and runs through August 1936 and documents a Mathers family road trip throughout much of the western United States including stops in many of the country's great national parks such as Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Sequoia and Yellowstone and Little Big Horne as well as stops at Stanford and Berkley Universities, San Francisco and the Mormon tabernacle in Salt Lake City, Utah, San Francisco. The second journal from August 1937 documents a trip through the upper northeast and documents stops in New York City and Washington D.C.

The Bloomington High School (1929-1934) and Indiana University (1933-1939) sub-series both consist primarily of textbooks, notes, course papers, and various assignments, exams, and compositions. When possible, the coursework was separated by subject matter and/or course title.
