Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Folklore Institute grew out of a shared interest in folklore topics among the faculty at Indiana University. This shared interest, manifested as early as the 1920s, gave rise to a series of Summer Institutes organized by Professor Stith Thompson (later dean of the Graduate School), starting in the 1940s and continuing into the 1960s. In 1962, under the dynamic leadership of Professor Thompson and Professor Richard Dorson, Indiana University formally established the Folklore Institute as an academic department within the College of Arts and Sciences. Today the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology consists of both the Folklore Institute and the Ethnomusicology Institute, which carry out the teaching mission at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and the Special Projects unit, which promotes and organizes a variety of research and outreach activities. The Indiana Communities Project was one of these outreach activities. The aim of this project was to help address the various inquiries and requests from community organizations to develop their own oral history and folklore activities.

Scope and Content:

This collection contains records pertinent to the Indiana Communities Project (ICP), which was initiated and managed by the Indiana University Bloomington Folklore Institute between 1979 and 1982. The collection is organized into five series: Administrative files; Residencies; Conferences and workshops; Evaluations and questionnaires; and Handbook material.

Arranged chronologically, the Administrative files series is further organized into three subseries: the ICP proposal and planning subseries consists of project descriptions and proposals, publicity information, contact information, application forms, and minute meetings. The Financial subseries contains the financial records of the project, including a list of all projects funded by the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) between the years of 1976 and 1981. Last in this series is the General subseries, which contains those miscellaneous pieces of information such as contact information, pamphlets and brochures for historical societies and similar institutions.

The second series in the collection, titled Residencies, contains a description of both locations and duration spent by members of the committee and the scope of information they acquired for the ICP. This series is further organized into three subseries: Applications, which contain applications from various historical societies and public institutions such as libraries, and a subseries of correspondence relating to the project. Both the Application and Correspondence subseries are arranged alphabetically. The Reports subseries holds the reports composed by humanists and historians during their residencies and is arranged chronologically.

Arranged chronologically, the Conferences and workshops series is made up of paperwork concerning the Indiana Communities Project conference. Some of the files included detailed minutes of meetings, applications and vouchers for applicants, planning stages, and workshops.

Arranged chronologically, the Evaluations and surveys series contains various surveys of the ICP, conferences, residencies, as well as evaluation notes.

Arranged chronologically, the Handbook materials series focuses on the process of developing a handbook related to the Indiana Communities Project, as stated in the proposal. This series contains drafts from the early stages of the handbook's development to near its completion.
