Background

Biographical / Historical:

Literary societies cropped up early on American college and university campuses, and were one of the few social outlets available to students. At Indiana University, the two main literaries were the Athenian and Philomathean, established in 1830 and 1831, respectively.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists entirely of a single ledger with signatures from campus literary society members spanning 1864-1875. On the top of each page is written: "We whose names are hereunto subscribed, pledge ourselves to submit, both as students and as members of the literary societies, to all the rules and regulations of the board of trustees, as long as we remain members of the Institution." Each entry includes the student's name, hometown, and name of their parent or guardian.
