Background

Biographical / Historical:

Parks House is a unit within the Wright Quadrangle, a dormitory located on the corner of North Jordan Avenue and Tenth Street on the Indiana University Bloomington campus. The dormitory was built for male student housing in 1949 and named after Joseph A. Wright, governor of Indiana from 1849-1857, in 1959. Wright Quadrangle contains eight units connected by stairwells, breezeways, and hallways and is divided into eighteen different "houses": Dodds House, Ferguson House, Stockwell House, Dunn House, Parks House, Dewey House, Rollins House, Jenkins House, Hummer House, Nichols House, Ruter House, Todd House, Hall House, Campbell House, Harney House, Lowe House, Elliott House, Harding House.

The Parks House Scribe, written by male residents of Parks House, Wright Quadrangle, was produced from 1960 through at least 1978. The numbering conventions of the Scribe-Orifice and the Orifice indicate that these publications, also from residents of Parks House, were probably a continuation of the Scribe, rather than entirely separate operations.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of newsletters and magazines produced by the male student residents of Parks House, Wright Quadrangle, between 1960 and 1980. The publications include an incomplete set of 15 volumes of the Scribe (1960-1978), four issues of the Scribe-Orifice (1979-1980) and the Orifice (1978-1980). The issues, consisting of simple stapled pages, include campus news, drawings, jokes, and pictures. Humor (ranging from mild to obscene), and news articles are the primary features of these publications. Special issues, such as holiday-themed issues, occasionally contain covers illustrated in color.
