Background

Biographical / Historical:

Pamela W. Freeman began working at Indiana University Bloomington in 1985 and retired in 2011. She held many different positions throughout her tenure, including Assistant Dean of Students, Director of the Office of Student Ethics and Anti-harassment programs, co-chair of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Anti-harassment Team and Racial Incidents Team, and chair of the University Commission on Multicultural Understanding.

She was actively involved in the Lambda 10 Project National Clearinghouse for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Greek program, which was founded in the fall of 1995 at Indiana University. Created in order to "heighten the visibility of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) members of the college fraternity and sororities" through the publication of "educational resources and educational materials related to sexual orientation and gender identity/expression as it pertains to the fraternity/sorority experience." Freeman served as co-editor for Lambda 10's first two publications, Out on Fraternity Row: Personal Accounts of Being Gay in a College Fraternity (1998) and Secret Sisters: Stories of Being Lesbian and Bisexual in a College Sorority (2000), both released by Alyson Publications, Inc.

Scope and Content:

Organized into three series, this collection holds papers that relate exclusively to Freeman's involvement with the Lambda 10 Project National Clearinghouse for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Greek program. Founded in the fall of 1995 at Indiana University, the project created the first educational resources solely dedicated to this topic.

The first series, Lambda 10 Project Files (1996-2002) consists of general correspondence, agreements, advertising, and research notes relating to the project as a whole and to the projects' two resulting publications.

The second and third series relate to two publications that resulted from the Lambda 10 Project. These series are Out on Fraternity Row (spans 1996-1998) and Secret Sisters (spans 1996-1998). These series are both organized into two subseries. The Submission files subseries consist entirely of stories submitted for inclusion in the final publication. Those submissions appearing in the final edited volume include permission forms and a small amount of correspondence, while those not selected only include the story and some related correspondence. The Manuscripts and publication subseries consist of numerous drafts of the final publication.
