Randy Long (1951- ) is a metalsmith and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Indiana University Bloomington (1983 – 2018), leading the Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design program for the School of Art, Architecture and Design. This collection primarily contains Long's instruction materials, exhibition records, personal artistic and research papers, and her correspondence.

Background

Biographical / Historical:

Randy Long was born in Natrona Hights, Pennsylvania in 1951 and earned an Associate of Arts degree from Southwestern College, a BA and MA in Art with Honors from San Diego State University, and an MFA from California State University at Long Beach. Before teaching at Indiana University Bloomington, Long taught at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, California and Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, primarily teaching 3D Design and introductory fine arts courses. In 1983, Long started teaching at Indiana University and quickly became active in the administration of fine arts at IU. Long advanced from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor in 1987 and Associate Professor to Full Professor in 1996.

Long's artwork has been shown across the United States and internationally in over 300 exhibitions and in 24 books. She is the recipient of two National Endowment of the Arts Visual Artist Fellowship Grants, two Indiana Arts Commission Master's Fellowships, and an Outstanding Young Faculty Award from Indiana University in 1986. Additionally, in 1996, Long was awarded the Indiana Arts Commission's Governors Award in the Arts. Long's notable works include Minoan Coffee Server, which was awarded the Grand Prize in the 1988 American Craft Awards, and Minoan Teapot which was exhibited in the international traveling metalsmith show, Craft Today USA. Countries where her work was shown include Greece, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Australia, France, South Korea, Japan, and Mexico.

In addition to being an accomplished independent artist, Long was an established member of the IU Bloomington faculty, serving as the head of the Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design program for nearly 35 years. Long mentored students taking introductory metalsmith courses as well as established Master of Fine Arts students who would later teach in the IU Metalsmithing program themselves. Randy Long also lectured and guest taught at other craft institutes, metalsmith society conferences, and international fine arts symposiums, making her a widely regarded artist and teacher in the world of metalsmithing and jewelry design.

Scope and Content:

The Randy Long papers includes documentation of Long's career as a metalsmith and consists of six series: Biographical, Teaching, Students, Exhibitions and consignment, Research and professional, and Correspondence.

The Biographical series (1951-2016) contains papers from Long's youth and young adulthood leading into her career at Indiana University. The series is organized into two subseries, Journals (1971-2016), which includes Long's personal prayer and travel journals, and General (1951-2002).

The Teaching series (1954-2012) contains lecture notes, course handouts and detailed metalsmithing technique instructions, as well as documentation of Long's course planning and guest teaching work including her lectures at the notable Arromont School of Arts and Crafts and the Summervail Workshop. The series is organized into three subseries including Course administration (1980-2003), Instruction materials (1954-2012), and Guest teaching, lectures, and workshops (1979-2012).

The Students series (1978-2005) includes information about the metalsmith and fine arts students that attended Drake University or Indiana University Bloomington. This series is organized into three subseries: Student files (1981-2001), Metalsmith student slides (1978-2005), and General (1999-2004). The Student files subseries contains files Long kept of her students and details about their work. This subseries is under a blanket restriction at this time as the contents contain student records under protection per the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The Metalsmith student slides subseries is available for viewing, and they contain detailed photograph slides of a wide range of IU fine arts student artworks in the metalsmithing program. The General subseries includes example student work and mounted photographs of student artwork. Files in this subseries that contain identifiable student information are restricted.

The Exhibitions and consignment series (1976-2017) contains Long's records relating to the many exhibitions her work was featured in as well as the documentation of artwork consignment and sale. This series is organized into two subseries: Consignment records (1980-2008) and Exhibitions (1976-2017). The Consignment records subseries includes loan receipts and correspondence between galleries and Long. The Exhibitions subseries gives details of her work being featured in private and public collections such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Yale University Art Gallery, and her solo exhibitions at the Susan Cummins Gallery in California.

The Research and professional series (1959-2017) covers Long's professional career as an instructor, administrator, and artist. The series is organized into eight subseries including: Sketches and designs (1977-2001), Professional development and conferences (1973-2017), Reference and research materials (1968-1996), Featured articles and reviews of work (1981-2017), Artworks (1985-2014), Grants, fellowships, and awards (197-2017), Professional relationships (1959-2009), and Indiana University (1982-2014). Each subseries contains detailed subject files surrounding Long's artwork and professional career at Indiana University Bloomington and within national societies such as the Society of North American Goldsmiths and the Sterling Silversmiths Guild of America. This series also includes Long's professional dossiers that include an extensive description of her artistic accomplishments and personal statements about her motivation as an artist.

The Correspondence series (1968-2017) includes three subseries that describe the nature of the correspondence including Personal (1968-2017), Professional (1978-2016), and Student correspondence (1983-2017).

Appraisal information:

Scantron faculty assessment records, student applications with sensitive information, and Long's tax records were removed and destroyed from the collection. Papers throughout the collection that contained more than three duplicates were also removed and recycled.

Custodial history:

Randy Long donated the collection to the University Archives in 2019 (Accn. 2019/051).

Boxes 3 and 4 contain restricted materials including student files that contain FERPA violating content and files that contain sensitive information.
