Background

Biographical / Historical:

Written between 1968-1969, The Armageddon News was among a select group of FBI-planted one-page throwaway publications for countering New-Left activity on college campuses. Along with similar publications such as The Longhorn Tale at the University of Texas Austin and the Rational Observer at American University in D.C., the Armageddon News was revealed to be a part of the FBI's COINTELPRO program, charged with hampering the activities of and creating discontent and confusion amongst extremist organizations across the United States from the McCarthy Red Scare days to the later period of the Vietnam War. The publication describes the activity and "anarchistic" beliefs of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), Young Socialist Alliance (YSA), and the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) as a hostile intrusion onto the Bloomington campus.

Scope and Content:

The collection consists of two issues of Armageddon News from March 1969. While this collection only includes those issues, the March 7th edition mentions that the publication produced additional newsletters during the previous semester, meaning that they were likely active in 1968. The two publications in this collection address concerns of the right-wing or anti-leftist students, as seen by the FBI, of the Bloomington campus amidst rising activity of new-left organizations.
