Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Indiana University Apartment and Family Student Council was established at Indiana University in 1967, under the name the Married Students' Council. The organization's mission was to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for married students residing with their families on or around campus through event programming, publication, and even activism. Throughout its history, the organization instituted several valuable initiatives for its members ranging from equipment loans, garden-plot rentals, and aerobics classes. In 1978, the organization was renamed to the Family Student Council, and again circa 2004 to the Apartment and Family Student Council. These changes reflected the evolution of the organization's scope to accommodate not just families but also other constituent groups such as international students and minority populations.
