Background

Biographical / Historical:

In 1935, writer Emily Hahn, 1905-1997, settled in Shanghai to teach English. The Sino-Japanese conflict eventually caused her to leave Shanghai for Hong Kong, where she was forced to remain when the Japanese took power in 1941. Hahn's friends and family urged the U.S. Government to add her name to their list of journalists living in Japanese territories so that she could be included in an exchange of American and Japanese journalists. Hahn was repatriated in 1943 and proceeded to produce two books concerning her years in Shanghai and Hong Kong: China to Me (1944) and Hong Kong Holiday (1946).
