Background
- Biographical / Historical:
David Nordloh was a professor of English at Indiana University for 42 years (1965-2007). He also was director of the American Studies program from 1988-1994. While at Indiana University, he was editor to several publications, including A Selected Edition of W. D. Howells, Twayne's United States Authors Series, and American Literary Scholarship: an Annual. Nordloh acquired this collection of letters alongside colleague, Philip Daghlian, to use in introductory bibliography and research courses for English students.

The collection consists of approximately 125 items dating between 1792 and 1947. They are primarily correspondence to and from distinguished American and English literary figures and booksellers. In addition, there are several postcards, portraits, autographs, and poetry manuscripts.
