Background

Biographical / Historical:

John Edward Hurt, 1912-2006, was an attorney and politician born near Hall, Indiana. After graduating from the Indiana University Law School, Hurt became a partner in McNutt, Hurt, and Blue, with offices in Martinsville and Indianapolis; he also served as a judge in the Morgan County Circuit Court. His active political career in the Democrat party included serving as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention and managing the campaigns of Governors Henry F. Schricker and Matthew E. Walsh, as well as serving in the campaign of Governor Paul V. McNutt. In 1937, he married Mary Anna Doswell Hurt, and they had three children.

The collection consists of clippings, correspondence, photographs, programs, and ephemera removed from several scrapbooks relating to the political, legal, and military careers of attorney John E. Hurt. Scrapbook themes include Governor Henry F. Schricker's campaign, Governor Paul V. McNutt's campaign, the Martinsville Lions Club, Eminence Bank, and Hurt's military career.
