Background

Biographical / Historical:

The monthly magazine Black Music was published in London by IPC Specialist and Professional Press Ltd. from December 1973 until July 1984, when it was absorbed by Blues & Soul. Ray Coleman was Editor in Chief, Alan Lewis served as Editor, and staff writers included Tony Cummings and reggae historian Carl Gayle. The magazine's stated mission in the inaugural issue was to cover all Black music across the African diaspora, "from Harlem, New York, to Kingston, Jamaica, from London to Lagos." Regular columns included the following sections: News, New Blood, Albums, Charts, New releases, Hey Mr. DJ, Crossword, Dave Godin, Gospel, What's Going On, On Stage, Films, Books.

Scope and Content:

The magazine issues present include the first issue, but end in 1977 and therefore do not span the entire date range of the magazine's publication. Within the years represented in the collection, there are some gaps in issues as well. Please see the collection inventory for a detailed inventory of the issues present.
