The collection consists of articles, clippings, and interviews compiled during research for Seymour's book, Luther: The Life and Longing of Luther Vandross (2004), and subsequent research on topics related to R&B musicians, black music genres, the black gay community and gay musicians. Also included are audiocassettes containing interviews conducted by Seymour with Luther Vandross, various R&B musicians and record company personnel, as well as a large collection of mixtapes and commercial CDs.

Background

Biographical / Historical:

Author, photographer, and academic Craig Seymour holds a Ph.D from University of Maryland at College Park, is Associate Professor of Journalism at Northern Illinois University, and has taught writing at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. He has written two books, the memoir All I Could Bare: My Life in the Strip Clubs of Gay Washington, D.C. and a biography of Luther Vandross, Luther: The Life and Longing of Luther Vandross. The materials in this collection pertain to Seymour's book on Vandross and include materials he used to research this book, including articles, interviews, clippings, and mixtapes.

Scope and Content:

The collection consists of articles, clippings, and interviews compiled during research for Seymour's book, Luther: The Life and Longing of Luther Vandross (2004). The collection is divided into six series. Series 1 includes files, arranged chronologically, pertaining specifically to Luther Vandross. Materials include press clippings and releases, articles, and programs. Series 2 includes articles, press clippings, and notes about various artists, arranged in alphabetical order. Many of these artists are referenced in the Vandross biography. Series 3 includes subject files, primarily about various black music genres, arranged alphabetically. Some files also reference the black gay community and gay musicians. Series 4 includes audiocassettes containing interviews conducted by Seymour [and others?] with Luther Vandross, various R&B musicians and record company personnel, and about black gay culture and discrimination.
