Background

Biographical / Historical:

Harry Allen is a hip hop activist, writer, radio host, and "media assassin." He has written for publications such as VIBE, The Source, and The Village Voice for 20 years and publishes his own blog, Media Assassin, that addresses race, politics, and culture. He has a longtime association with the rap group Public Enemy and collaborated with Rockstar Games on Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Between 2003-2015, Allen was host and producer for the weekly radio show "NONFICTION," aired on WBAI-NY/99.5 FM. Allen is a 2017 Nasir Jones Hip-Hop Fellow at Harvard University and a 2020 CAST (Center for Arts, Science, and Technology) Visiting Artist at M.I.T. Beginning in the 1990s, Allen has worked as an advisor to the Archives of African American Music & Culture. Harry Allen lectures at colleges and universities, speaking about his photography of Public Enemy's members before the band was formed, as well as speaking about the history, development, and social/political/economic issues of rap and hip hop. His lectures at Indiana University are documented in this collection.
