Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Islamic Society of North America was formed through the comination of the Muslim Students'Association (MSA), Islamic Medical Association (IMA), the Association of Muslim Social Scientists (AMSS), and the Association of Muslim Scientists and Engineers (AMSE) in 1982. The MSA dates back to 1963, and the other partner organizations were founded by groups of MSA alumni. ISNA moved to Plainfield, Indiana in 1990.

ISNA's mission is "to foster the development of the Muslim community, interfaith relations, civic engagement, and better understanding of Islam." Members of ISNA are found at many interfaith events, with the goal of building mutual respect and understanding. The organization provides many services to Muslim communities in North America: in addition to chaplaincy services, ISNA holds a yearly convention, produces programming and support for youth through Muslim Youth of North America (MYNA), and services for single Muslims seeking marriage. The Muslim Students' Association continues to serve as an umbrella organization for campus chapters of the MSA.
