Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Afro-American Studies Program was established in 1981 to offer classes leading to a minor in the subject. The program functions within the School of Liberal Arts. In 2003 the program was renamed the African American and Diaspora Studies Program. The program is currently known as the Africana Studies Program.

Scope and Content:

The Africana Studies Program Records houses the administrative records, faculty records, and correspondence of the IUPUI Africana Studies interdisciplinary program. This collection, which dates from 1973 to 1998, consists of correspondence, reports, publications, conference papers, and other materials. This collection covers the inner workings and early development of the department in the School of Liberal Arts.
