Williams taught mathematics at Indiana University for nearly 50 years however, he was best known for his multi-volume work, Lincoln Finds a General, 1949. Williams was also the first commander of the Student Army Training Corps, later to be known as The Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) at Indiana University.

Established in 1968 by then Interim President Herman B Wells, the Committee on Historic Preservation sought to provide a leadership role on historic preservation efforts across the State of Indiana. The collection consists of correspondence, memos, and reports created and collected by Donald F. Carmony, who served as the first chair until 1971 and John B. Patton, who served as chair from 1974-1978.
