Indiana University Bureau of Evaluative Studies and Testing publications, 1969-1987

A result of amalgamations of School of Education research divisions, the Bureau of Educational Studies and Testing began at Indiana University in the 1960s. In 1977, its name changed to the Bureau of Evaluative Studies and Testing and more recently, is known as Educational Services and Testing and is part of the university's Instructional Support Services. The collection consists of twenty-two published monographic studies and a list of all monograph studies published by the bureau from 1963-1987.

Indiana University Chancellor's speeches, 1950-1996, bulk 1962-1990

Herman B Wells was named acting president of Indiana University in 1937 and then president the following year. He served as president until June 30, 1962. After his retirement from the role of president, IU created the position of University Chancellor, a position which Dr. Wells held until his death in 2000. This collection is made up of Wells' speeches given while he served in his role as Chancellor. Speeches include baccalaureate and commencement statements, Sigma Nu fraternity addresses, new building dedications, and a wide variety of speeches, introductions, addresses, and dedications given at Indiana University student and faculty events, as well as local community events.

Indiana University chapel roll book, 1883-1891

Throughout most of the nineteenth century, students at Indiana University were required to attend chapel services every morning before class. Though attendance was no longer mandatory after the 1889-1890 school year, the university chapel continued to host lectures, song services, and religious services. This collection consists of the chapel roll book, which documented attendance of students between 1883 and 1891.

With a history dating back to 1895, the Chemistry library was initially housed in Wylie Hall, however with the completion of the Chemistry building in the 1930s it relocated and remains in that location to this day. Indiana University Classical Club's The Classic, 1921-1923

The Classic (originally titled The Classical Club Notes) was a publication issued by the Classical Club of Indiana University, a student organization centered around celebrating its members' enthusiasm for the study of Classics. The Classic featured essays and passages of translations by Indiana University faculty, alumni, and students, as well as announcements for upcoming Classical Club events. This single-series collection contains issues of the Classic spanning three volumes, dating from 1921 to 1923.

Indiana University Club records, 1959-2021

The University Club was established at Indiana University in 1959 by combining four older Indiana University clubs: the Men's Faculty Club (established in 1912), the University Women's Club (originally titled the Faculty Women's Club when established in 1913, renamed in 1959), the Women's Faculty Club (established in 1923), and the Newcomer's Club (originally part of the University Women's Club). From 1959 until 1988, the University Club acted as an umbrella organization for the four separate clubs it contained. In this structure each individual club pursued its own programs and also participated in University Club programs. Starting in 1989, however, all programs developed by the four separate clubs have been listed under the rubric of the University Club and have been open to all members of the University Club. The goals of the University Club are to organize and implement social and cultural events.

Frank T. Gucker was the Dean of Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences from 1951-1965. During his tenure as Dean the College of Arts and Sciences tripled in size. He also launched the College's study of foreign areas in 1956 and helped to establish the department of History and Philosophy of Science in 1958. The collection consists of records created and collected by Gucker during his tenure as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

The group reviewed policies, curriculum, as well as statistics pertaining to admission, enrollment, and matriculation. The College faculty no longer meet. The Policy Committee of the College and Arts and Sciences was established in 1942 to undertake the investigation of particular issues affecting faculty and students within the College. This group was meant to be a policy-forming, advisory body that determined "both the policies of the College in its relationship with other departments of the University and the general policy of the College itself." The Collection consists of minutes and general documents for this committee, spanning the period from its inception in 1942 to 1998.

Indiana University College of Liberal Arts Dean's records, 1909-1915, bulk 1910-1913

During the early years of its existence, aside from a small Law School, Indiana University consisted solely of a College of Liberal Arts (became College of Arts and Sciences in 1921). Horace Hoffman, professor of Greek, served as the first Dean of the College 1894-1920. Collection consists primarily of incoming correspondence from former and proprospectivepective I.U. students. Most of the correspondence consists of inquiries about entrance to the university, transfers, and requests for transcripts or catalogs. The collection is not complete as it ends with the "M" correspondents.

Indiana University Collins Living-Learning Center (CLLC) records, 1924-2023, bulk 1972-2021

Indiana University's Collins Living-Learning Center (LLC) was established in 1972 - one of the first in the country - in the Men's Residence Center (MRC). Eventually the LLC took over the entire MRC and was renamed after IU professor and administrator Ralph L. Collins. It has since expanded to include "The Hill," Brown and Greene, and Hillcrest (apartments for juniors and seniors). The Collins community is intentionally academically diverse, and students pursue majors across the university. Collins is host to a wide variety of programs and events planned through one of many student groups such as the Board of Education Programming (BOEP), Arts Council, Community Council, and the Board of Programmers (BOP), or as student Q projects through CLLC-Q 199: Residential Learning Workshop. The materials in the Collection represent both the administrative and student aspects of the Collins Living-Learning Center.

Indiana University Commission on Multicultural Understanding records, 1979-2010

The Commission on Multicultural Understanding was established in 1982 at Indiana University. The organization strove to make IU an environment in which students could feel safe and at home, regardless of race, age, religion, ability, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status. The collection consists of minutes, reports, and correspondence regarding the yearly operation of the organization as well as details audiovisual and other educational resources on topics such as race, religion, gender identity, sexual identity, sexuality, and rape awareness.

Established in 1968 by then Interim President Herman B Wells, the Committee on Historic Preservation sought to provide a leadership role on historic preservation efforts across the State of Indiana. The collection consists of correspondence, memos, and reports created and collected by Donald F. Carmony, who served as the first chair until 1971 and John B. Patton, who served as chair from 1974-1978.

Indiana University Comptroller records, 1935-1946, bulk 1936-1942

With the retirement of the Indiana University Bursar in 1936, the Board of Trustees created the new administrative position of University Comptroller to manage the university's financial operation. As the university's business manager, the Comptroller had a number of duties including preparation and control of the budget, handling of student loan funds, collection of gifts and bequests and general charge of the physical plant. Ward Gray Biddle served as the first and only Comptroller because in 1942 the university underwent a reorganization and the Comptroller's duties were assumed by other positions. The collection consists of 2 cubic feet of University Comptroller records spanning 1935-1942.

Indiana University Computing Services records, 1954-1993, bulk 1965-1990

Collection consists of records generated between 1954 and 1993 by University Computing Services. The Research Computing Center was established in 1954 and evolved into the Marshal H. Wrubel Center in 1973 and after 1981 University Computing Services. The collection is organized in three series. The Director's correspondence series consists almost entirely of outgoing correspondence from the director's office, arranged chronologically. Directors represented in the collection include the Center's first directors, Lynne Merritt and Marshal H. Wrubel as well as subsequent directors. The Minutes series, arranged chronologically, consists of minutes of the senior staff meetings and the final series, Reports, contains UCS's annual reports from 1958-59 through 1992-93. Also included in the series are the proceedings of an annual conference on instructional and academic computer applications which UCS helped organize, reports from the Research Computing Center Committee, reports submitted to the National Science Foundation in support of grant applications, and study reports on instructional computing. The series is arranged alphabetically.

Indiana University Conservative League records, 1961-1970

The Indiana University Conservative League was a student organization that aimed to give a voice to conservative students on campus through publication and event programming. The organization held talks and debate panels featuring prominent conservative figures, such as William F. Buckley Jr. and Ernest van den Haag, and ran a publication titled, the Hoosier Conservative, which contained political commentary, event announcements, and recommended further reading. This single-series collection contains publications, faculty-advisor correspondence, and event announcements from 1961 to 1971.

The University Council was created by a vote of the general faculty on 10 January 1929. The purpose of this group was to consider any question of academic policy affecting the University as a whole. This collection is organized into three series: Minutes, Reports and recommendations, and Memos.

Indiana University Cyclotron Facility Cooler Storage Ring records, 1980-2006

The "Indiana Cooler" storage ring at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility (IUCF) was a storage ring for light ions, consisting of a circular magnet lattice of about 100 meters in circumference. The storage ring was built to facilitate the novel technology of electron cooling, which made possible the use of an internal target and enabled unprecedented experiments in nuclear research. The collection includes research notes, log books, administrative documents, correspondence, research proposals, photographs, and illustrations related to the operations of the Cooler storage ring and the nuclear research output that was produced with the use of the Cooler.

Indiana University Dance Program records, 1927-2012, bulk 1953-2012

Jane Fox, a dancer and faculty member of Indiana University, introduced the art of contemporary dance to the Bloomington campus in 1927 with the inception of the Contemporary Dance Program under the auspices of the Physical Education program (renamed Kinesiology in 1989). While it was first considered a women's extracurricular physical fitness program, it quickly evolved into a respected major and minor field. The program's objective was to teach students to use modern dance to convey ideas and feelings through natural movements. This collection includes scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, program booklets, photographs, film, sheet music, and miscellaneous records pertaining to the Program.

Indiana University Daniel Read Residence Center Community Council minutes and other material, 1975-2002, bulk 1975-1990

Completed in 1955, the Center was originally known as the Smithwood Center and intended as a new dormitory for female students. In 1960, the Center was renamed Daniel Read Residence Center to honor the late professor of ancient languages who taught Indiana University's first female students. The Council is made up of representative groups from within the Center, including center staff. It oversees any aspect of center life affecting students and staff and serves as an open forum for staff and students to proactively address center issues, to create center programming, to efficiently use community resources, and to help sponsor events. The collection spans the years 1975-2002 and consists primarily of minutes from Council meetings but also includes handbooks and manuals related to the Council and residence hall living. The folders, and the materials in them, are in their original order.

Indiana University DBA Program Chair's records, 1965-1971, bulk 1967-1971

The doctoral program in IU's School of Business dates from 1947 when a Ph.D. was approved by the university trustees. Since that time, over 1,000 candidates have graduated from the program. This collection contains files dating from the tenure of Schuyler F. Otteson as chairman of the doctoral program (1965-1971), and includes correspondence and administrative files.

This collection includes records predominantly from the tenure of Ralph L. Collins (1959-1963), Ray L. Heffner, Jr. (1964-1966), Joseph L. Sutton (1966-1968), Joseph R. Hartley (1968-1969), and Henry H. H. Remak (1969-1974) and consists of correspondence, reports, committee files, minutes, and memos.

Indiana University Department of Chemistry records, 1922-2003, bulk 1950-1980

Chemistry has a long history at Indiana University, first being added to the curriculum in 1829 by then-IU President Andrew Wylie. The majority of this collection is comprised of faculty publications, mostly dating from the 1950s to the late 1970s. It also contains a small number of departmental publications, such as the Association of Indiana University Chemists newsletters, and administrative files related to laboratory safety, chemistry departments at regional campuses, and other departmental affairs.

This collection contains administrative files, subject files, correspondence, files and audio recordings of the Special Projects unit, grant and budget information, and conference files produced by the department and its affiliated institutes from 1942 through 2010.

The collection consists of faculty research publications and select student papers of noteworthy academic and research value. The publications pertain mainly to politics and government within the state of Indiana.

Indiana University Department of History and Philosophy of Science - Chair's records, 1973-1991

Collection consists of 1.7 cubic feet of records created by Dept. of History and Philosophy of Science chair Edward Grant. Prof. Grant served as department chair 1973-79 and again 1987-90. The two series, Subject files and Correspondence, provide a wealth of information on the happenings within the department. Included in the Subject files are departmental memos, meeting minutes, and budget information. Frequent correspondents in the Correspondence series are university administrators Kenneth R. R. Gros Louis and Morton Lowengrub.

Though history courses were taught at Indiana University as early as the 1820s, a formal department did not exist until 1895, when the Department of History and Political Science was established. In 1914, the Department of History was made an autonomous University unit. The records in this collection date primarily from Leo F. Solt's tenure as Chair of the Department of History and include a range administrative materials, correspondence, and various documents in relation to Department initiatives, coursework, degree programs, and faculty.

Indiana University Department of Home Economics records, 1911-1999, bulk 1945-1995

The Indiana University Department of Home Economics, established in 1913, taught students "the principles and processes involved in the science and art of homemaking." The department also ran a practice Home Management House, which served as a practical laboratory for students to practice running a house on their own. In January 1987, the department name changed to Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design. The collection consists of documents and audio-visual materials pertaining to the formation and development of the Department and information about the practice house that the department maintained on the Bloomington campus.

Indiana University Department of Military Science records, 1918-2000, bulk 1965-1994

Although military training has a long history at Indiana University, the Department of Military Science and Tactics was established in 1917. The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) fell under the auspices of the department and was a compulsory program for all male students at IU until 1964. The Department of Military Science (Reserve Officers Training Corps) records span the years 1918-2000. These records are organized into seven series: Correspondence, Historical information, ROTC organizations, Publications, Subject files, Realia, and Photos and scrapbooks. Philosophy has been taught at Indiana University since its founding, but it was not until 1929 that the Department of Philosophy was officially established as an independent department. This collection consists of administrative records, many having to do with the department's involvement in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation. There are also class descriptions and schedules, departmental reviews, papers relating to the Ewing Essay Prize, staff meeting minutes and agendas, and other miscellaneous records.
