Collections

The Lincoln mss., ca. 1798-1959, consist of letters, documents, and facsimile copies of documents by and about Abraham Lincoln, 1809-1865, his ancestors, immediate family, members of his cabinet, and other persons closely connected with him.

The Kerlin mss., 1798-1925, consists of the papers of Mrs. Harriet Barton (Kerlin) Bentley, (Mrs. Frederick James Bentley), and members of three generations of her family.

The Hall mss., 1797-1862, consists of the papers of Samuel Hall, 1797-1862, judge and member of the Board of Visitors of Indiana University.

The Wilkins mss., 1797-1801, consist of official receipts to John Wilkins, 1761-1816, Quartermaster general of the U.S. Army, 1796-1812.

The Williams, Samuel mss., 1796-1919, consist of letters and papers of Samuel Williams, 1786-1859, and his son, Samuel Wesley Williams, 1827-1928.

The Harrison Township, Knox County, Indiana mss., 1796- 1888, consists of records of Harrison Township and Knox County, Indiana.

The Woodburn mss., 1795-1942, consist of letters and papers of four generations of the Woodburn family, James Woodburn, 1748-1812, farmer; Dorrance Beatty Woodburn, 1786- 1856, farmer and teacher; James Woodburn, 1817-1865, teacher; and James Albert Woodburn, 1856-1943, historian.

The Gerstein mss., ca. 1795-1824, consists mostly of portraits of General Lafayette collected by Jacob and Sylvia Finn Gerstein.

The Astle mss., 1795-1797, consists of the letters and memoranda of Andrew Stuart, 1725-1801, Scottish lawyer, to Thomas Astle, 1735-1801, English antiquary and paleographer.

Consists of the papers of Charles Willing Byrd. A member of the prominent Virginia family of that name, Byrd became deeply interested in the Shaker movement, and one of his sons, William Silonwe Byrd, joined the Shaker community at Pleasant Hill, Kentucky. For the years 1826-1828, a considerable portion of the collection consists of letters from this son, dealing with the beliefs of the Shakers and the affairs of Pleasant Hill. The collection also includes letters to Charles Willing Byrd from members of his family, in regard to family matters. Letters from an aunt refer to the death of Washington and to conditions in Philadelphia during the War of 1812. Some light on medical practices of the day is given in letters, 1826-1828, to Byrd from his physicians, prescribing treatment for him.

The W.H. Harrison mss. II, 1794-1834, consists of letters and papers, of William Henry Harrison, 1773-1841, territorial governor of Indiana and ninth president of the United States.

The Meigs mss., 1794–1831, cpnsists of letters and papers of Return Jonathan Meigs, 1764–1825, governor of Ohio, United States senator, and postmaster general during the administrations of Presidents James Madison and James Monroe.

The Jouy mss., 1793-1843, consists primarily of letters to and from soldier, journalist and librettist, Étienne de Jouy, 1764-1846.

The Nordloh mss. consist of over 100 American and English letters, postcards, autographs, and notes spanning the years 1792-1947.

The Boone mss., 1791-1868, consists of the letters and papers of lawyer, teacher, merchant, and politician Benjamin Pennebaker Douglass, 1820-1904, and his second wife, Queen Victoria Boone, 1837-1885.

The Ellison mss., 1790-1949, consist of materials compiled by Robert Spurrier Ellison.

The American literature mss., 1789-2000, consists of an ongoing collection of individual items related to American literature.

French Legal Documents mss. are those manuscripts concerned with French legal matters which have been acquired as individual pieces.

The Williams, W. mss., 1788-1857, consist of the letters and The Journal of Penrose, Seaman by William Williams, 1727-1791, painter and novelist.
