In 1938, Indiana University began to engage in radio activities. A room was set aside for use as a studio and control room, and a radio director and program director were hired. For years, radio classes were taught through several already established departments such as Speech and Journalism. At the Board of Trustees September 20, 1945 meeting, they approved the establishment of a Dept. of Radio as an "unattached" department under the Dean of Faculties. In 1953 it became the Department of Radio and Television within the College of Arts and Sciences and in 1974 the Department of Telecommunications. This collection contains the department chair's records from 1939-1963 and is comprised of correspondence, budgetary information, annual reports, information on various radio and television stations, and subject files. Records span the tenures of chairs Harry Skornia (1942-1953) and Elmer Sulzer (1954-1964).

Indiana University alumnus, professor and administrator. A well-known ichthyologist, Carl H. Eigenmann earned his BS, MA and PhD at Indiana University. Eigenmann taught in the Dept. of Zoology for over 40 years, served as Dean of the Graduate School when it was first established in 1908 until his death, and was founder and director of the Indiana University Biological Station in northern Indiana. Collection consists of personal papers, correspondence, and writings of Eigenmann in six series.

The origins of the University Faculty Council can be traced back to a University reorganization begun by university president Elvis J. Stahr. In 1969 the University Faculty began a council for policy and academic decisions for the broader multi-campus University system, as the Bloomington Faculty Council became a legislative body for the faculty on the Bloomington Campus. This collection consists of the agendas, minutes, circulars and supporting documents of the University Faculty Council, the governing body of the university faculty throughout the Indiana University system.

The collection is organized into six series: Agendas, Minutes, Circulars, Supporting documents, Committee Files, and Subject Files.

Frank de Caro and Rosan Jordan are both folklorists who worked at Louisiana State University. They co-authored several books together. This collection includes drafts and correspondence pertaining to published works, de Caro's family history, as well as some of Jordan's teaching materials and research on Day of the Dead. Included in the collection are an extensive amount of postcards that were collected from various travels.

Philip Appleman was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus with the Department of English at Indiana University, where he began teaching in 1955. His publications include several novels, collections of poetry, and numerous nonfiction works. Appleman's works often reflect his expert knowledge of Charles Darwin's theories. The collection consists mainly of revisions, proofs and galleys of his publications.

The Indiana Communities Folklore Project was a joint effort between the Folklore Institute and Oral History Research Project of Indiana University which spanned 1980-1982. The aim of the project was to expand beyond the University to meet the growing requests by the community for aid in works pertaining to oral and folkloric activities and history, such as surveys and directories, collections, and festivals. The collection consists of materials that trace the development of the project. These materials include the project proposal, a list of the various community residencies undertaken for the project, conference and evaluation papers, and drafts of a resource handbook.

Allen Day Grimshaw was a Professor of Sociology at IU from 1959-1994. The collection consists primarily of his research, published works, and teaching files as they relate to IU.

Wilbur F. Pell, Jr., a 1937 graduate of Indiana University and a 1940 graduate of Harvard University Law School, led a successful career in law. While a student at Indiana University, he held leadership positions in numerous areas, including editor of both IU's humor magazine the Bored Walk and of the university yearbook, the Arbutus. He also served as the manager of the University Theatre, and in 1936 was elected Grand Master of the Beta Theta Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Indiana University. This collection contains materials related to his work with the Arbutus, Beta Theta, and the University Theatre. Also included is a small amount of personal correspondence.

The School of Journalism had its beginnings at Indiana University when the first journalism course was offered in 1891. A Department of Journalism was established in the College of Arts and Sciences in 1911, and in 1974 the department became the School of Journalism. The School of Journalism has had many well-known and successful graduates, including the famous World War II journalist Ernie Pyle. This collection consists of records of the Department/School of Journalism collected and compiled by Marjorie Blewett, an administrative assistant in Journalism from 1965-1980 and placement director from 1980-1990. The records within the collection consist largely of the correspondence and other administrative files generated by the directors or deans of the Department/School of Journalism. The majority of the records were generated by or sent to John Stempel and Richard Gray during the years 1938-1984, but Marjorie Blewett also contributes some her own personal records.

Henry Radford Hope was an internationally acclaimed art critic and historian who joined the Indiana University faculty in 1941. His tenure included 27 years as the chair of the School of Fine Arts as well as ten years as the director of the Indiana University Art Museum from 1961 to 1971. The collection is comprised of publication and research files, correspondence, and teaching materials.

Denis Sinor was a faculty member of Indiana University in the Uralic and Altaic Program (now the Department of Central Eurasian Studies) from 1962 to 2011. Sinor founded the Department of Uralic and Altaic Studies in 1965 and the Asian Studies Research Institute for Inner Asian Studies (now the Sinor Research Institute for Inner Asian Studies [RIFIAS]), both of which he served as director for until his retirement from IU in 1986. He was active in many organizations during his tenure at Indiana University, most significantly the Journal of Asian History (JAH), Permanent International Altaistic Conference (PIAC), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and National Defense Education Act (NDEA). This collection consists of Sinor's correspondence with various organizations, IU, and personal contacts.

John Henry Mueller was a Professor of Sociology on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington for thirty years, from 1935-1965, Chairman of the Sociology Department and the Chairman for the Convocations Committee. While classified as a Sociology professor, Professor Mueller's expertise also extended to the arts (particularly music), and into the disciplines of Philosophy, Psychology, Linguistics, and History. This broad scope of interests is reflected in his papers and range from his college days until the time of his death in 1965. The collection is comprised of four series: Biographical and Personal Information, Correspondence, Writings of John Mueller and finally Research notes, Classroom Material, and Committee Files.

Howard Gest was a professor of Microbiology and an adjunct professor of History and Philosophy of Science at Indiana University who specialized in microbial psychology and metabolism. The collection consists of Gest's published work, research notes, correspondence and his teaching and lecturing notes during his tenure at Indiana University.

Both graduates of the University of California, Berkeley, Barbara and Charles Jelavich were hired at Indiana University in 1962 as specialists in Eastern European History by then Chair of the History Department Robert Byrnes. The majority of the collection reflects the work of Barbara while a small portion of the work of Charles is included with publications.

Edward Grant, a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History and History and Philosophy of Science taught at Indiana University for over thirty years. This collection consists of 24.6 cubic of Edward Grant's papers. Consists of correspondence, research, drafts, publications, and course and lecture notes. By far the largest series in the collection is the Teaching series and includes materials from Grant's years teaching as a graduate student at the Univ. of Wisconsin and then later at Indiana. The bulk of the series, though, consists of folders relating to the courses he taught in the IU Dept. of History and Philosophy of Science. The Publications series contains information on many of Grant's publications, including his books Much ado about nothing and Source book in medieval science.

A. Peter Brown served as a member of the musicology faculty at the Indiana University School of Music from 1974 until his death in 2003. Brown's name is most closely associated with that of the composer Josef Haydn, on whom Brown wrote and co-authored no less than four books, as well as the critical score for Haydn's Die Schöpfung. Representing the whole of his scholarly career, this collection includes materials from Brown's time as a doctoral student, and as a scholar and teacher, comprised of correspondence, teaching files, grants materials, and research and writing files. Brown's research files make up the bulk of the collection.

The American Forum for Global Education (1986-2008) was a nonprofit organization created through the merger of Global Perspectives in Education, Inc. (1976-1986), which was a former branch of the Center for War/Peace Studies of the New York Friends Group, and the National Council on Foreign Language and International Studies. The American Forum for Global Education provided professional development, curriculum materials, lesson plans, and resources to educators for teaching students about global/international history, culture and sociopolitical issues. This collection is predominantly comprised of publications of the American Forum for Global Education and its predecessor organizations.

The groundbreaking feminist scholar and literary critic, Susan Gubar, began teaching at Indiana University in 1973 and retired as Distinguished Professor Emerita of English in 2010. This collection contains teaching and research material; material related to professional activities such as conferences, workshops, and committees; an extensive collection of news clippings with reviews and interviews; Gubar's publications and information related to the development of those publications, and both personal and professional correspondence.

Martha M. McCarthy is the Chancellor's Professor Emerita of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Indiana University. McCarthy's research focuses primarily on Education Law. Collection includes publications, drafts, teaching materials, grant proposals, and project reports. Also included are materials relating to McCarthy's involvement in professional organizations, conferences, and research data.
