The Russian and East European Institute, comprised of several departments at Indiana University, was established in 1958 and is one of the leading area studies centers in the country. The collection consists of funding applications, projects, programs and administrative files related to the institute and it departments.

Indiana's first state forester; Deam was a taxonomic botanist known for his work on trees, plants, shrubs, and flowers of Indiana. Collection consists of diaries, correspondence, copies of published books, library records, financial records, notations on specimens, records of sale of Deam's library and herbarium to Indiana University, articles about him, information about his family, and a paper by Deam on the pharmacy business. Includes correspondence from Charles A. Weatherby, curator of Gray Herbarium at Harvard University.

Thomas Sebeok (1920-2001) was an internationally renowned semiotician who taught at Indiana University from 1943 to 2001. This collection documents Sebeok's career at Indiana University and contains correspondence, subject files, publications, research and grant materials, and departmental and committee records.

Bernard M. Fry was a librarian and Dean of Indiana University's Graduate Library School from 1967 to 1980. Before his time at IU, Fry served in various librarian and bibliographer positions at Mary Washington College, the Library of Congress, US Army Corps of Engineers, the Atomic Energy Commission, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Commerce. His papers include his research, writings, materials related to his association with Pergamon Press, and correspondence related to his professional activities before his tenure at IU.

Jon Michael "Mike" Dunn (1941-2021) was an active faculty member and administrator at Indiana University, Bloomington from 1969-2007. Dunn started his career at IU in the Department of Philosophy and was additionally named a professor in the Department of Computer Science in 1989. He was also the first executive associate dean for the College of Arts and Sciences 1988-1993 and the founding dean of the School of Informatics 1999-2007. This collection represents Dunn's work across his career, including activities at IU and research and publishing activities related to relevance logics and algebraic approaches.

The Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies (RCLSS) was initially founded by Herman B Wells in 1955 as the Research Center for Anthropology, Folklore, and Linguistics; it was renamed the Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies in 1975. RCLSS evolved and grew rapidly under the direction of Thomas A. Sebeok, who served as Chairperson from 1956 through his retirement in 1991. The Center's primary functions included research, publishing, teaching, and the advancement of institutional connections in the interdisciplinary field of semiotics. This collection contains administrative records, student files, undergraduate and graduate curriculum development materials, committee reports and records, course files, and issues of the RCLSS in-house periodical Language Sciences.

Held annually since 1940, the Indiana University Writers' Conference provides workshops and classes that offer writers of all levels the opportunity to learn from a faculty of well-known and award-winning authors. Correspondence between Conference staff and potential faculty members as well as various administrative files are represented in the contents of this collection.

The Robert. A. and Sandra S. Borns Jewish Studies Program was established on the Bloomington campus in 1972 with the aid of a Lilly Endowment. It is now one of the largest and oldest programs supporting the interdisciplinary study of the Jewish people and civilization. The collection consists of the program's administrative and subject files documenting the creation and growth of the program and includes correspondence, reports, newsletters, videos, and photographic material.

Robert Campbell was a professor of economics at Indiana University from 1961 until his retirement in 1993, during which he held the positions of chairperson for the Department of Economics and Director of the Russian and East European Institute. He was a scholar of centrally planned economies, especially of the former Soviet Union. The collection consists of materials used for his publication A Biobibliographical Dictionary of Russian and Soviet Economists, records related to his consultations and conferences, documents related to his distinguished professor nomination, and correspondence.

Daniel J. Crowley was a folklorist with research and ethnographic interests in African and African diaspora communities. This collection consists of collected folktales Crowley had planned to use to create a tale-type index.
