Collections

William Lowe Bryan served as president of Indiana University 1902-1937. This collection consists almost entirely of incoming correspondence from the years 1913-1937. The files are arranged alphabetically, most often by the correspondent's surname, but also by subject or by name of the institution or department. The majority of the correspondence is addressed to Bryan but much of it is also addressed to other high ranking IU administrators such as Registrar John W. Cravens or University Secretary Ulysses Howe Smith.

Una L. Camp was an undergraduate student at Indiana University from 1913-1917. This collection consists of a scrapbook compiled by Una to document her time at IU, which includes photos, letters, mementos, local newspaper clippings, programs from campus events, and other items. Additionally, the collection includes Una's diplomas and a certificate from Pi Lambda Theta.

This collection consists of a mostly-complete run of the Indiana University News-Letter from 1913 to 1945. The newsletter, originally titled Alumni News-Letter of Indiana University, was a monthly publication primarily used to communicate Indiana University news with alumni.

The Bureau of Public Discussion was created as part of the Extension Division at Indiana University in 1915 to promote intelligent discussion of current issues statewide. The collection consists of records of the Bureau including annual reports, reference questions, correspondence, personnel files, financial records, program records, and publications.

In 1937, historian Oscar O. Winther joined the history faculty of Indiana University, where he remained until his death in 1970. Winther's areas of expertise included the Western United States, including the Pacific Northwest. Included in this collection are publications, teaching files, correspondence, and files related to professional activities.

The Woman's Press Club established the Delta Chapter of Theta Sigma Phi at Indiana University in 1913 as a professional sorority for women in journalism. Early on, their aim was to "unite women engaged in or planning to engage in journalism; work to set and achieve definite standards in journalism and letters; and inspire members to greater individual effort." In 1972, the group changed its name to Women in Communications. The collection consists of scrapbooks, event files, newspaper articles, awards, meeting minutes, and other administrative files.

The University Women's Club was established at Indiana University on April 24, 1913, under the name of the Faculty Women's Club. The goal of the club was to hold social gatherings for members. In 1959 the group changed its name to the University Women's Club to avoid further confusion with the Women's Faculty Club. The collection consists of meeting minutes and reports, subject files and scrapbooks.

A graduate of Indiana University, Ernest P. Bicknell is best known for his work with the American Red Cross, most notably during the First World War. His humanitarian service earned him great respect and numerous awards from European governments. The collection contains material related to his Red Cross service in Europe, including scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, photographs, and two awards.

Leonard Conrad "Ruck" Ruckelshaus graduated from Indiana University with an A.B. in Economics in 1923. Ruckelshaus was on the IU varsity baseball squad as an outfielder, as well as the IU varsity football squad. This collection largely consists of materials documenting the IU varsity baseball team's 1922 trip to Tokyo, Japan, upon the invitation of Waseda University. A diary documenting the trip, as well as letters, a scrapbook, and a large number of photos constitute this small collection.

Theodore Bowie was a prominent faculty member at Indiana University, whose contributions to the field of the history of Asian Art made him a pivotal figure in the development of both the University's Art History Program and the University's Art Museum. This collection contains materials from both Bowie's professional and personal career. Professional documents from his time spent as professor and curator include lecture notes, travel itineraries, copies of scholarly publications, departmental memos and correspondence, loan agreements for exhibitions, and exhibition catalogues. A large number of exhibition materials pertain to "The Arts of Thailand", a traveling exhibition organized by Bowie that showcased previously unrecognized Thai art in the West. Accompanying these professional documents are Bowie's personal correspondence, drafts of his memoir, and a large number of photos and exhibition scrapbooks.

Henry H. H. Remak was hired at Indiana University-Bloomington as a full-time professor for the Department of German in 1948. He also taught for the Department of Comparative Literature, West European Studies and the Honors Division. Additionally, Remak chaired the Department of German in 1962, the Department of Comparative Literature intermittently between 1954 and 1963, as well as West European Studies from 1966-1969. He was also Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculties from 1969-1974 and Director of the Institute for Advanced Study from 1988-1994 and 1997-1998. This collection consists of papers related to Remak's teaching, administrative positions, university and disciplinary service, and academic scholarship.

Catherine Ruby Force was an undergraduate student at Indiana University (A.B. Botany, 1919) from 1915-1919, during which time she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority and the Botany Club. This scrapbook documents her time at Indiana University and includes photos of Force's friends and family, as well as booklets, pamphlets, cards, and other memorabilia from sorority events and gatherings.

Edward Everett Edwards was a researcher and educator in the area of finance and education. As a long-time friend and colleague of Herman B Wells, he became involved in the University first as a student, then as Wells's assistant and as a professor of finance. This collection contains papers that were created or collected chiefly during his time as assistant to Wells, including his research for the University and his work with professional organizations like the Indiana Banker's Association.

The Hungarian-American project was an international undertaking of the Indiana University Folklore Institute between 1981 and 1984. Headed by IU folklorists Linda Dégh and Inta Carpenter, scholars from the United States and Hungary conducted ethnographic fieldwork to identify the uses of ethnicity among Hungarians in Hungary, Hungarian-Americans in the Calumet region of Indiana, and Hungarian-Americans in Chicago. The project led to the conference "Culture, Tradition, Ethnicity," hosted at Indiana University from March 26-28, 1984 and inspired a 1987 conference in Budapest. A special double issue of the Journal of Folklore Research printed many materials from the conference and was published later the same year. Collection consists of records relating to project personnel, fieldwork, and conferences.

Alma Eikerman (1908-1995) was a metalsmith and professor at Indiana University (1947-1978), where she developed the Department of Fine Arts metals program. This collection spans most of her lifetime, providing documentation of her artwork, teaching career, travels, family, friends, and students.

George T. Engelman Jr. was a graduate from Indiana University, attending IU from 1937-1941. He worked and raised his family for a few years in Bloomington while studying for his master's degree in education in the 40s and 50s and working for RCA. He was also a WWII veteran. This collection contains his army records from 1942-1968, biographical documents from 1915-2008, correspondence, family home videos, teaching documents, and materials from his time serving in WWII such as ration stamps and Pearl Harbor Officers' Club cards.

Emma K. Schmidt was a student at Indiana University from 1916 to 1918. This collection consists of a scrapbook she made to document her time at IU and includes information on campus buildings, booklets from campus events, local newspaper clippings, school and financial documents, and miscellaneous memorabilia. There is also an IU Red Book, a publication with class and event schedules, faculty and student directories, and information pertaining to different groups or organizations on campus.

The Browning Society of Indiana University was established about 1916 as a social society to discuss the works of poet Robert Browning and issues associated with mid-late nineteenth century society. The collection consists of a book of the society's meeting minutes and includes information about active members.

The Indiana University Cosmopolitan Club was founded in 1916 and received its charter from the Corda Fratres Association of Cosmopolitan Clubs in 1918. The Club was dedicated to fostering understanding and fraternity between foreign and American students in order to promote international cooperation and peace. The collection consists of correspondence, programs, financial records, membership lists, and newspaper clippings. Also included are publications, including issues of the Club newsletter, the Cosmo reporter.

The Men's Faculty Club was established at Indiana University in 1912. The goals of the Men's Faculty Club were to organize and implement social and cultural events for members. In 1959 the group became part of a new organization called the University Club, which acted as an umbrella organization for four smaller Indiana University clubs, including the Men's Faculty Club. Starting in 1989, however, all programs organized by the four clubs have been listed under the rubric of the University Club and have been open to all members of the University Club. The collection consists of by-laws, correspondence, meeting minutes, subject files, and financial records.

Indiana University celebrated its 150th anniversary in 1970. Leading up to this anniversary, a Sesquicentennial Office for special programs and planning and Birthday Fund for fundraising operated. These files contain the subject files pertaining to planning and programming, as well as promotional materials, publications, and other extraneous materials related to the Sesquicentennial and the University.

William R. Ringer graduated from Indiana University in 1920. After earning his JD at the University of Michigan, he went on to have a successful legal career. This small collection consists primarily of diaries and journals maintained while Ringer was an Indiana University student.

This collection consists of the papers of Roscoe Carlyle Buley, an alumni and history professor at Indiana University. The collection is organized alphabetically by subject, and includes the letter notifying Buley of his Pulitzer Prize.

Horace Porter Goff was an Indiana University alumnus who served during World War I in France with the 30th Engineer Regiment (Gas and Flame). This collection consists of correspondence, a diary, a transcription of the correspondence and diary with annotations, discharge papers, and a 1918 IU commencement program.

Allen Day Grimshaw was a Professor of Sociology at IU from 1959-1994. The collection consists primarily of his research, published works, and teaching files as they relate to IU.

E. Ross Bartley worked in public relations for Indiana University, U.S. Vice President Charles G. Dawes, and presidential candidate Alf M. Landon. Collection consists of Bartley's writings and speeches, correspondence, files related to organizations with which Bartley was involved, and newspaper clippings. Within the correspondence series, the papers dating from 1925-1928 make up the bulk of the series and primarily pertain to his career as secretary to Vice President Charles G. Dawes but does not include any correspondence with Dawes himself. Bartley's writings and speeches that are included in the collection focus primarily on college public relations.

John Henry Mueller was a Professor of Sociology on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington for thirty years, from 1935-1965, Chairman of the Sociology Department and the Chairman for the Convocations Committee. While classified as a Sociology professor, Professor Mueller's expertise also extended to the arts (particularly music), and into the disciplines of Philosophy, Psychology, Linguistics, and History. This broad scope of interests is reflected in his papers and range from his college days until the time of his death in 1965. The collection is comprised of four series: Biographical and Personal Information, Correspondence, Writings of John Mueller and finally Research notes, Classroom Material, and Committee Files.

Although military training has a long history at Indiana University, the Department of Military Science and Tactics was established in 1917. The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) fell under the auspices of the department and was a compulsory program for all male students at IU until 1964. The Department of Military Science (Reserve Officers Training Corps) records span the years 1918-2000. These records are organized into seven series: Correspondence, Historical information, ROTC organizations, Publications, Subject files, Realia, and Photos and scrapbooks. The bulk of the collection consists of the Organizations and Subject files series. All series except Correspondence are arranged alphabetically.

Mildred Daum Ridenour, an Evansville native, attended Indiana University 1919-1922. Upon graduation, she went on to teach English in Evansville and Petersburg. She married W.W. Ridenour in June 1926. This small collection consists of a diary and two scrapbooks that date chiefly from her time as a student at IU.

This collection consists of the records of the Memorial Fund Campaign, a series of drives to raise funds for the construction of an athletic stadium, women's dormitory, and student union building as memorials to IU students and former students who had participated in World War I.

Hubert C. Heffner was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Speech, Theatre, and Dramatic Literature at Indiana University. After teaching at several institutions across the United States and England, he settled in Bloomington in 1955. In addition to his teaching responsibilities within the Dept. of Speech and Theatre, Heffner was acting director of the Indiana University Theatre from 1959-60 and 1970-71, and he was involved with the Indiana Theatre Circle. He retired in 1971 but continued as an occasional guest lecturer at IUB until his death in 1985. The collection consists of lecture notes, classroom handouts and teaching aids, Heffner's correspondence and personal writings, book reviews written by Heffner and files on various organizations to which he belonged throughout his career. Prominent in the teaching materials are Heffner's files on drama, especially American drama, and individual playwrights.

Joseph C. Muhler was an assistant professor of chemistry at Indiana University from 1951 to 1972, and research professor of dental science and director of the School of Dentistry's Dental Research Institute from 1972 until his retirement in 1984. Muhler was the leader of the team that developed the original formula for Crest toothpaste in the 1950s, and his interests included that of preventative dentistry and its practices. The collection consists primarily of papers related to Dr. Muhler's research interests and his activities at IU, including original research, publications, correspondence, teaching files, student theses and materials relating to professional organizations. Records related to his Crest research are included in the collection.

This collection consists of a cover design proof and two issues of the short-lived student humor magazine the Crimson Bull (1920). The magazine, which was published with financial support from the Indiana University chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, satirized aspects of university life through comedic sketches, cartoons, articles, and editorials contributed by IU students.

The Alumni Office's War Service Register contains records relating to the men and women of Indiana University who served in a U.S. war between 1860 and 1945 (i.e., the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, the first World War, or the second World War).

The Language Club consisted of faculty members from the language departments as well as other liberal arts departments. Meetings included a presentation by one or two club members or guests, generally on topics of literature or the arts, followed by a group discussion of the presentation, reports on language association meetings members had attended, and discussion of departmental issues. This collection consists of .4 cubic feet of records created by the Indiana University Language Club from 1920-1964. Includes meeting minutes, member and officer lists, reports, and addresses.

Joseph A. Franklin began as a student at Indiana University in 1922. Following his 1927 graduation with a degree in finance, Franklin remained an employee of the University's fiscal offices for the entirety of his professional career during which he was appointed University treasurer (1946-1971), vice president (1948-1971), and Fiscal Counsel to the President (1971-1975). Franklin was active in various professional, community, and service organizations including Acacia Fraternity, Church of Christ, Lions Club, Myasthenia Gravis Foundation, Riley Memorial Association, and the United Fund. This collection primarily holds papers relating to Franklin's service activities and includes correspondence, invitations, financial records, publications, and minutes.

Charles Hyneman was a Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Indiana University. Collection contains biographical materials, copies of articles, manuscripts, research notes, lectures, teaching materials, papers and reports relating to his work for the federal government during World War II, and general correspondence. Includes manuscript copies of American founding experience (published in 1994), Government and politics in the United States (not published), and some chapters of an unfinished book to have been co-authored by Hubert H. Humphrey on the American political system. Correspondents include Hubert H. Humphrey, Sander Vanocur, and Herman B Wells.

Pi Lambda Theta was founded in 1910 as an honor and professional association for women in education. In 1920, the Iota chapter was chartered at Indiana University. In 1974, the organization began admitting men. Collection consists of minutes, a ledger book, constitutions, membership information, publications, and scrapbooks.

Marvin Carmack was a professor of chemistry at Indiana University who specialized in organic chemistry and the study of lithospermum ruderale, among other research interests. The collection consists of Carmack's personal and professional correspondence, extensive research notes from his two university appointments and numerous private laboratory work, teaching materials from a variety of classes he taught as well as research notes from some of his students.

Established in 1941, the Indiana University Art Museum has amassed over 45,000 pieces spanning ancient artifacts to modern works. This collection consists of exhibition catalogs, marketing material, as well as catalogs and advertisements from the museum's earliest days.

The Board of Aeons was established on March 29, 1921 to function as a link between the student body and the administration. It is composed of 8 to 12 students of at least junior standing and meets regularly but informally once or twice a week with the President, Vice-President, Chancellor or other administrative officials. The Board of Aeons records include minutes, agendas, reports, correspondence, and officers' notebooks.

The Classic (originally titled The Classical Club Notes) was a publication issued by the Classical Club of Indiana University, a student organization centered around celebrating its members' enthusiasm for the study of Classics. The Classic featured essays and passages of translations by Indiana University faculty, alumni, and students, as well as announcements for upcoming Classical Club events. This single-series collection contains issues of the Classic spanning three volumes, dating from 1921 to 1923.

The Jordan River Revue was originally conceived as a benefit performance featuring Indiana University students to raise money for a new auditorium. Though strongest in the 1920s and 1930s, the Revue continued until 1966. Notable performers through the years included students Hoagy Carmichael and Charles "Bud" Dant. The collection consists of scrapbooks, correspondence, minutes, scripts, song lyrics, musical scores, and programs.

Roger Wilkinson was an Indiana University professor of physics from 1946-1968. Collection consists of correspondence, publications, lecture notes, and laboratory reports. The lecture notes included in the collection are from both Wilkinson's tenure as a professor as well as notes he took as a student at the University of Chicago. The Publication series consists of reprints of articles authored or co-authored by Wilkinson, 1951-1968.

Established in 1895 as the Women's League, the Indiana University Association of Women Students worked to give an official voice to women students. The collection consists of meeting minutes, budgets, handbooks, program and issues files, and general administrative records of the organization.

L.L. Waters was a professor of Transportation and Business History in the Indiana University School of Business from 1948 until his retirement in 1978. Waters was a recognized authority on transportation and business. The Waters papers include a large amount of correspondence, material related to conferences and professional organizations, teaching files, manuscripts, and published works.

Henry Thew Stephenson joined the faculty of the English Department at Indiana University in 1895 where he remained until his retirement in 1940. The Henry Thew Stephenson papers consist of the manuscript of Stephenson's unpublished "What Tree is That?"

Edna Hatfield Edmondson was a faculty member in the Indiana University Extension Division from 1919 through 1942. This collection consists of letters that Edmondson wrote to Frank R. Elliott, Director of Publicity at IU, while she was on a trip to Japan with the Indiana University baseball team in April-May 1922.

This collection documents the activities of Geraldine Katherine White, who completed a B.S. in Commerce from the Indiana University School of Commerce and Finance in 1926. The materials date from 1922-1926 and consist of notes from Geraldine's classes and scrapbooks illustrating her life at IU.

Myra Montgomery Arthur received her A.B. degree in English from Indiana University in 1927. The dance cards in this collection document various social events sponsored by IU fraternities, sororities, and other student organizations during the 1920s. The cards often provide the names of musical groups that performed at the dances, including Hoagy Carmichael and the Carmichael Collegians.
