Henry Radford Hope was an internationally acclaimed art critic and historian who joined the Indiana University faculty in 1941. His tenure included 27 years as the chair of the School of Fine Arts as well as ten years as the director of the Indiana University Art Museum from 1961 to 1971. The collection is comprised of publication and research files, correspondence, and teaching materials.

Henry Thew Stephenson joined the faculty of the English Department at Indiana University in 1895 where he remained until his retirement in 1940. The Henry Thew Stephenson papers consist of the manuscript of Stephenson's unpublished "What Tree is That?"

Henry William Hofstetter was a professor of optometry from 1952 until his retirement in 1980. He served as director of the Division of Optometry 1952-1970. Collection consists publications, personal and professional correspondence, records regarding Prof. Hofstetter's community and professional service, and files related to his research.

Herman B Wells served as president of Indiana University from 1937 through 1962 and University Chancellor from 1962 through 2000. In 1964, Wells occupied the house on the corner of 10th Street and Jordan Avenue in Bloomington now known as the Herman B Wells House. This collection contains handwritten and typed recipes and related items that were collected by Wells and individuals employed at the Wells House, including recipes for desserts, appetizers, main and side dishes, salads, and condiments.

Before becoming president of Indiana University, Herman B Wells served as an assistant cashier at the National Bank of Lebanon before going on to work for the Indiana Bankers Association, the Indiana Commission for Financial Institutions, and the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions. He was named dean of the Indiana University School of Business administration in 1935 by IU President William Lowe Bryan. In 1937 he was named acting president of the university and president the following year, a position he held until 1962. Upon his retirement, IU created the position of University Chancellor, which Dr. Wells held until his death in 2000. This collection consists of Wells' personal papers and includes papers pertaining to his family and personal finances, his activities in the banking profession, his work in Germany for the United States government after World War II, and to his research and teaching and professional activities as a member of the faculty of Indiana University.

Herrick B. Young was an Indiana University alumnus, 1925. After leaving IU, Young continued his schooling elsewhere and became an English and literature professor at Alborz College in Tehran, Iran. He later became President of the Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio, 1954-1969, and served as President of the Near East Foundation, 1972-1976. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and the Royal Central Asian Society, and held two honorary doctorates. This collection contains memoirs of Young's travels and scrapbooks and articles written by Young between the 1920s and 1980s. The collection also contains lectures, notes, correspondence, and Young's book, Strange lands and wonderful people.

The original Indiana University History Club was chartered in 1902 with various name changes and grouping changes in the years leading up to 1958. The intent of the clubs was to promote historical research, method of historical study and teaching interests. This collection includes constitutions, meeting minutes and officer books of the Indiana University History Club, the Graduate History Club, and the Logan Esarey Graduate History Club. The collection includes records of two distinct organizations due to the fact that the records were bound together in a series of journal style notebooks.

Homer Wheeler attended Indiana University from 1844-1846, studying law, literature and theology. His collection contains four letters between Homer and his brother Maro Wheeler. Letters discuss Homer Wheeler's arrival in Bloomington, his involvement with the Philomathean Society, and his job prospects upon graduation.

Horace Porter Goff was an Indiana University alumnus who served during World War I in France with the 30th Engineer Regiment (Gas and Flame). This collection consists of correspondence, a diary, a transcription of the correspondence and diary with annotations, discharge papers, and a 1918 IU commencement program.

Horst Frenz was a professor in the Department of Comparative Literature and English at Indiana University from 1940-1981, and served as chair of the Comparative Literature department from its creation in 1949 until 1977. The collection consists of publications, correspondence, and records relating to Frenz's position at IU as well as his professional interests. There is some correspondence relating to the establishment of the Dept. of Comparative Literature.

Howard Mehlinger served as a professor within the School of Education from 1965 until his retirement in 1997, at which time he was granted the title Professor Emeritus of Education. During his tenure at IU he served in two major administrative positions: Dean of the School of Education from 1981 to 1989 and as Director for the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) from 1993 to 1999. His major research foci included: issues involving Soviet-United States education and globalization, technology's role in the classroom, and high school social studies education. The content of this collection consists of papers documenting various IU and personal research initiatives, projects, and consulting positions; publications and speaking engagements; professional files; syllabi, reading lists, and documents for various courses, workshops, and seminars he taught at both IU and Lawrence High School in Lawrence, Kansas; and personal, professional, and institutional correspondence.

Howard Gest was a professor of Microbiology and an adjunct professor of History and Philosophy of Science at Indiana University who specialized in microbial psychology and metabolism. The collection consists of Gest's published work, research notes, correspondence and his teaching and lecturing notes during his tenure at Indiana University.

H. Scott Gordon was a Canadian-American economist who served as an economics professor at Indiana University from 1966-1988 and as an associate professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science from 1983-1988. The collection consists primarily of correspondence with students, fellow economists, and publishers, as well as some subject files related to lectures he gave and classes that he taught.

Hubert C. Heffner was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Speech, Theatre, and Dramatic Literature at Indiana University. After teaching at several institutions across the United States and England, he settled in Bloomington in 1955. In addition to his teaching responsibilities within the Dept. of Speech and Theatre, Heffner was acting director of the Indiana University Theatre from 1959-60 and 1970-71, and he was involved with the Indiana Theatre Circle. He retired in 1971 but continued as an occasional guest lecturer at IUB until his death in 1985. The collection consists of lecture notes, classroom handouts and teaching aids, Heffner's correspondence and personal writings, book reviews written by Heffner and files on various organizations to which he belonged throughout his career. Prominent in the teaching materials are Heffner's files on drama, especially American drama, and individual playwrights.

Iliya Harik was Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Indiana University Bloomington whose research and academic activities centered on Middle Eastern and comparative politics, government, and development. This collection contains a broad range of material related to Harik's academic research and teaching activities and personal life, including articles, drafts, correspondence, research proposals and notes, reports, course syllabi, and lecture notes and audio recordings.

The Indiana Club was established at Indiana University on December 9, 1904. The goal of the club was to advance the interests of the student body in the social, literary, political, and athletic realms. This collection consists of minute books, registers, a book on the history of the organization through 1915, records from the Alumni Association of the Indiana Club, and other documents.

The Indiana College Association was first formed as a supplemental organization to the Indiana State Teachers Association in 1867 but became a part of the ISTA in 1874. The collection consists of .4 cubic feet of records created by the Indiana College Association spanning 1877-1906. Includes meeting addresses, proceedings, and a record book. The record book contains the association's constitution and by-laws, history, annual meeting minutes, as well as lists of the association's founding institutions, original members, officers, and publications.

Formed in 1977, the Indiana Religious Studies Project (IRSP) brought Indiana secondary teachers to Indiana University to improve how the study of religion was taught in high schools. The collection consists of participant information (applications, course projects, correspondence), sample lesson plans, and a variety of records that pertain to the growth, successes, and shortcomings of the project over its seven year existence. The project's funding ended in 1984.

Established in Bloomington, Indiana, as the Bloomington Bible Chair by the Disciples of Christ in 1910; the name changed to the Indiana School of Religion in 1917. The mission of the School was to provide Biblical and religious education to, and to promote the religious education of, students who attended Indiana University. Collection consists of correspondence, minutes of the Board of Directors, financial records, publications, essays, pamphlets, and posters.

The Indiana School of the Sky radio program of the Indiana University Department of Radio and Television began broadcasting educational radio programs in 1947 and continued through the early 1960s. The program reached schools throughout Indiana and nearby states and led to new course offerings at IU. Indiana University students performed in the radio programs originally intended for children ages 4-8 aired for 15 minutes during each school day. Eventually the popularity of the programs called for high school programming as well, and later adults also tuned into the programs. This collection includes many of the scripts and the teaching manuals for the programs.

In April of 1890, a bogus publication created by members of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity was distributed to the public. The publication criticized several IU faculty members and students using exceedingly foul language. As the authors were originally unknown, University administration opened an investigation which resulted in the expulsion of several of the perpetrators. This collection consists of correspondence from various parties involved with the event, investigative documents, and a copy of the bogus publication itself. The bulk of the collection dates from 1890, but there is some correspondence with Herman B Wells regarding research into these documents dating as late as 1945.

The Adelphian Society was established at Indiana University on November 13, 1858, under the name the Erolathian Society. The goal of the literary society was to be a society of religious inquiry at the university, and in their first minutes the organization outlines plans of delivering original orations, essays, and debates on subjects related to Biblical literature. In 1859 the group changed its name to the Adelphian Society. Collection consists of by-laws and meeting minutes.

The Administrative War Council was organized January 6, 1942 to develop Indiana University's World War II war-time program. The final meeting of the Council was held May 9, 1945. The collection consists of minutes, reports, and Council rosters.

The work of the Admissions Committee was to consider and recommend admissions policies, pre-college guidance procedures, and to act as a Board of Appeals. Consists of minutes of committee meetings, correspondence, notes, and administrative subject files of the chairman of the Admissions Committee, William H. Strain.

The collection consists of the administrative records and correspondence of directors J. Gus Liebenow and Patrick O'Meara related to the development of the African Studies Program.

The Alcohol-Drug Information Center was established at Indiana University in 1982, under the name Alcohol Information Center, and is operated by the Division of the Dean of Students. The mission of the ADIC is to provide information on alcohol and other drug abuse substances to the Indiana University community. In 1987, the center changed its name to the Alcohol-Drug Information Center. Dee S. Owens served as the Director of the ADIC from 2000-2012. Recently, the ADIC changed its name to the Office of Alternative Screening and Intervention Services (OASIS). The Collection consists of records documenting the ADIC's general administration grants and programs.

The records in this collection document the Indiana University Beta Gamma Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity between the years 1939-1983 with the bulk of the collection being created after 1945. The collection consists of minutes, membership lists, later editions of their constitution and by-laws, chapter songs, president's files, and a limited amount of correspondence within the local chapter and with the national organization.

The Indiana University chapter of the Alpha Pi Zeta social science fraternity was organized in 1925. The purpose of the society was to encourage the investigation and scholarship in the social sciences. Active membership was open to professors, instructors, staff members, and select graduate students who had shown achievement in social sciences. Collection consists of minutes, financial records, correspondence, membership lists, meeting announcements, and constitutions.

The Indiana University Alumni Association was founded in 1854 as an organization through which graduates could contribute to the pursuit of university interests. Members of the Association held semi-annual meetings, first as the Alumni Association and later in separate branches, including the Alumni Council, established in 1913 (later called the Executive Council). This collection consists primarily of the minutes of the IU Alumni Association, Alumni Council, Executive Council, and Board of Managers meetings spanning 1854-2011.

The American Studies Program was established at Indiana University in 1965. The collection consists of correspondence, fliers, articles, and programs related to conferences, lectures, seminars, and exchange programs sponsored by the American Studies Program.

The Indiana University Apartment and Family Student Council was established at Indiana University in 1967 under the name the Married Students' Council. The organization underwent two name changes throughout its history: in 1978 it became the Family Student Council, and circa 2004 it became the Apartment and Family Student Council. The organization's mission was to foster community and host engaging programming for married students residing with their families on or around campus. The collection consists of materials dated between 1957 and 2013, including meeting minutes; agendas; publications; financial records; correspondence with other key organizations on campus; documentation of various subcommittees; and materials pertaining to topics such as community activities, campus developments, and childcare.

This collection was created from numerous loose dance cards acquired by and held at the IU Archives. The dance cards are from a number of events sponsored by student organizations and other social activities that were held at IU between 1909 and 1954. Each provides space for the women to document their dance partners' names and often provides information about the sponsoring student group, the dance chaperones, and the musicians performing for the event.

Established in 1941, the Indiana University Art Museum has amassed over 45,000 pieces spanning ancient artifacts to modern works. This collection consists of exhibition catalogs, marketing material, as well as catalogs and advertisements from the museum's earliest days.

The Indiana University Arts Administration Program, part of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs on the Bloomington campus, was conceived in 1970 with the first students beginning the program in the fall of 1972. The program is of an inter-disciplinary nature, drawing on the cooperative efforts of SPEA, the Department of Theatre and Drama, and the Schools of Business, Music, Fine Arts, and Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, with the goal of providing a balance of artistic and business concerns, of theory and hands-on experience. The collection consists of conference and symposium files, correspondence, committee files, general administrative records, and files related to alumni and student projects.

The Asian Culture Center was founded at Indiana University Bloomington in 1998. The Center works to raise awareness facilitate dialogue and cultural understanding within the wider IU community about Asian experiences and issues through advocacy, cultural and educational support, community outreach, funding opportunities, and special events. This collection consists of documents relating to the creation and opening of the ACC, events and programs, student organizations, and the Asian Alumni Association.

The office of Vice President of Administration was established during the 1974 University reorganization and was responsible for the management of a wide range of University functions. The office's diverse duties included budgetary administration, management services, computing systems, and intercollegiate athletic programs. This collection consists of records created and collected during the tenure of Herbert Glenn Ludlow, who served as Vice President of Administration from 1975-1981. The collection is organized into three series: Correspondence, Committee files, and Reports.

Established in 1895 as the Women's League, the Indiana University Association of Women Students worked to give an official voice to women students. The collection consists of meeting minutes, budgets, handbooks, program and issues files, and general administrative records of the organization.

One of the two chief literary societies on campus, the Athenian Society was founded at Indiana University in 1830. Literary societies gave students practice in speaking and writing through regular orations, essays, and debates, as well as filling a social role. Collection consists of minutes, correspondence, publications, addresses, and announcements. The Publication series includes copies of the Athenian, a monthly periodical of writings submitted by members of the Athenian Society that were of "a high literary character," including what the editors considered "chaste and elevated literature." These span December 1845 through November 1846. Most prominent in the collection are the minutes from the weekly meeting of the Society.

The "Big Ten" Intercollegiate Faculty Athletics Committee was formed on January 11, 1895. Indiana University became a member of the Committee in 1899. The general purpose of the Committee was to exert more faculty control over athletics. The records of the Athletics Committee comprise 2.6 cubic feet and span 1940-1964. The majority of the records date to John F. Mee's tenure as chairman, 1951-1962, but there are also records from William R. Breneman's tenure, 1943-1951.

Collection consists of the administrative records of the Auditorium manager spanning 1941-1946. The Administration series covers the managerial decisions and other administrative records of the Auditorium between the years 1941 and 1944 and is arranged alphabetically by subject. Included in the Administration series is a Correspondence subseries organized alphabetically. Prominent correspondents include Krauss and Ward G. Biddle who served as Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Union Board Director, and Chairman of the Dedication Committee. The Events series covers all of the performances, conferences and university related events between the years 1941 and 1946, and is arranged in chronological order.

The Auxiliary Services Office oversaw offices and departments at Indiana University that were self-supporting and encompassed the Auditorium, Bookstore, Campus Bus Service, Campus Foods, Communications, Halls of Residence, Indiana Memorial Union Building (IMU), Motor Pool and Parking Operations. Over the years, Auxiliary Services had several name changes. Those reflected in the records of this collection include Auxiliary Services, Business Manager's Office, and Service Enterprises. Records in this collection include, but are not limited to, correspondence, committee files, departmental files, reports and budgets.

The IU Axolotl Colony, started in 1957, was a National Science Foundation -funded breeding colony of Mexican axolotl located in the Department of Biology at Indiana University in Bloomington. The colony supplied axolotl embryos, larvae and adults to laboratories for use in genetic research and to classrooms until the colony was moved to the University of Kentucky in 2005. Collection consists of newsletters.

The Cultural Studies Program was established circa 1992 and promotes interdisciplinary research with a focus on the relationship between cultural forms and power relations in society. The Cultural Studies Program records spans 1995-2012 and documents various aspects of the program's administration, including budgeting, funding, course scheduling, and staffing, as well as conferences and other events organized by the program.

Established in 1974, the Bloomington Library Faculty Council is the formal representative organ of the library faculty at Indiana University Bloomington. The goal of the BLFC is to strengthen and coordinate the library faculty at Indiana University's flagship campus in Bloomington. The records of the BLFC consist of the administrative files, constitutions, and reports of the council and its various committees, including the secretary's files.

The Indiana University Bloomington Professional Staff Council became an official university organization on October 16, 1985. This representative council was created to empower the many professional staff members at the university by giving them a voice in university policies and actions that affect the working conditions, services, and benefits of their employment. The bulk of the collection consists of meeting minutes as well as information concerning the many committees, task forces, and university organizations that affect the daily operations and policies of the Professional Staff Council.

The Board of Aeons was established on March 29, 1921 to function as a link between the student body and the administration. It is composed of 8 to 12 students of at least junior standing and meets regularly but informally once or twice a week with the President, Vice-President, Chancellor or other administrative officials. The Board of Aeons records include minutes, agendas, reports, correspondence, and officers' notebooks.

The Board of Student Publications was established by the IU Board of Trustees on September 5, 1946, as it was thought that increased enrollment triggered by the G.I. Bill of Rights would cause a demand for more student publications. The primary function of the Board was to formulate policies on matters such as budgetary issues, the hiring of student staff, and general business procedures. The collection is organized in one series, Meeting files. Each folder contains the minutes corresponding to the meeting date on the folder as well as correspondence, memos, reports and newspaper clippings relating to that meeting.

The Indiana University Trustees serve as the governing board of the university. Created in 1820, the current Board meets six times per year. Among the Board's powers are their capacity to possess all the real and personal property of the university; to expend the income of the university; and to all bylaws necessary to carry these powers into effect. The minutes in this collection include official acts, resolutions, policies, agreements, and other business pertaining to the governance of Indiana University between 1838-1859 and 1883-2017.

The Indiana University Board of Trustees serve as the governing board of the University. Created in 1820, its powers include the capacity to possess all the real and personal property of the university, to allocate the income of the university, and to create or approve all rules necessary to carry these powers into effect. This collection contains agendas, correspondence and reports which support the discussion generated at the official Trustee meetings.
