Daniel W. Biddle (1870-1954) was a student at Indiana University from September 1893 through Spring 1895. This collection consists of letters that Daniel W. Biddle wrote to his parents and his friend Janie Bartee during his attendance at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana from 1893-1895. The letters document Biddle's social and academic life at IU through details on his interactions with his roommates, classmates, and professors; his studies and laboratory work; and events on campus and in the Bloomington community, including an 1895 student protest supporting the removal of IU to Indianapolis.

This collection consists of broadsheets, ephemera, "fast literature," magazines, and newspapers chiefly from the Sadleir collection.

The Frederick, Robert A. mss., 1880-1993, consist of photographs, clippings, scrapbooks, and research materials gathered and written by historian Robert A. Frederick about conservationist Richard Lieber.

Class scraps at Indiana University were a series of violent events in which the students of opposing classes competed in physical challenges such as capture the flag or general brawls or fist fights. This collection includes broadsides, often mocking and vulgar, printed in advance of the competitions.

Clarence Flaten (1910-1974) was Supervisor of Photography at the Indiana University Audio-Visual Center from 1949-1974 and a faculty member in the IU School of Education from 1958-1974. This collection documents Clarence Flaten's family life, professional career at Indiana University, and military service during World War II through photographs, film, correspondence, course materials, publications, military personnel files, and other materials.

Lockridge mss. III, circa 1837-2000, consists of the correspondence, unpublished manuscripts, photos, papers, and audio tapes pertaining to the life and work of author Ross Lockridge, Jr., 1914-1948, and the Lockridge family.

Materials collected from the composition studio of Leonard Bernstein, a conductor, composer, and musician active during the mid-20th century. The collection includes recordings, books, scores, awards, artwork, clothing, furniture, and other artifacts pertaining to his professional and personal life.

The Cookery mss., circa 1660–circa 1918, consists of bound and individual writings, often on the topic of cookery, of persons involved with cooking by practice or trade.

The Cycling mss., ca. 1879-1978, consists of materials pertaining to the growth of bicycling and the bicycling industry in the late-19th and early-20th century.

This is a collection of several hundred ridiculous rhymes in imitation of known authors and their works. It includes parodies of Thomas Moore, Rudyard Kipling, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edgar Allan Poe, Alfred Tennyson and William Shakespeare, among others.

The Wensinger, Arthur S. mss., 1798-2007, consists of the papers of translator and academic Arthur S. Wensinger, 1926- .

The Lindenbaum, Peter mss., ca. 1590-2008, consist of the papers of Dr. Peter Lindenbaum (1938-2010), a former English Professor at Indiana University.

The collection consists of a group of 28 hornbooks. Also included are two auction catalogs for sales where some of the hornbooks were sold and a description of a hornbook in brass from dealer Patrick King's list no. 11, 1986.

The Gottfried mss. consists of Latin manuscripts and a working translation of Giovanni Della Casa's Rime by Rudolf B. Gottfried, 1909-1986, professor emeritus of English, Indiana University.

The Allen mss., 800-1972, consists of manuscript pieces collected by William Edward David Allen, 1901-1973, foreign service officer, businessman, and author, and his own writings about Georgian history.

The Pliny mss., 9th cent.-1938, are photostats of Pliny manuscripts assembled by Selatie Edgar Stout, 1871-1969, professor of Latin and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Indiana University.

The Ricketts mss., 9th-19th cent., are illuminated medieval and renaissance manuscripts assembled by Coella Lindsay Ricketts, 1859-1941, calligrapher, of Chicago, Illinois. Most of the material relates to religious matters.

The Near Eastern mss., 700-1915, consist of a collection of individually acquired manuscripts pertaining to the region formerly known as the Near East, now referred to as the Middle East.

The History of the Written Word: Pages from the Past, 2400 BCE-1920 CE, consist of a collection of original leaves from rare books and manuscripts in limited portfolio sets.

The Adomeit mss., 2000 BCE - 1995 CE, consists of miniature manuscripts collected by Ruth Elizabeth Adomeit, 1910-1996.

The Starr mss., 19th century, are holograph copies and originals of vocal and instrumental music and one letter collected by Saul Starr, 1907-1964, physician of Eastchester, New York.

This collection contains the personal papers of renowned IU professor and artist, Harry Engel.

The Maugham mss. II, 1899-1970, consists of the correspondence and writings by and about novelist William Somerset Maugham, 1874-1965, collected by Grenville Cook of Watford, Herts, England.

Emma J. Phillips was born in 1900 in Alexandria, Indiana to schoolteachers J. W. Phillips and Arvia Phillips. She graduated with Distinction from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts in Romance Languages in 1923. Upon graduation, she returned home to teach French and English at Alexandria High School. In 1934, she completed her Master of Arts in English with her thesis titled The Technique of George Whyte - Melville's Novels. In 1967, she received a Ph.D. in English from Indiana University. Her dissertation was titled Mysticism in the Poetry of Emily Dickinson. She died on April 11, 1991 in Alexandria, Indiana. The collection consists of course notes, assignments, theses, miscellaneous correspondence, clippings, pamphlets published by professional societies, and commencement materials.

The Bullen mss., circa 1898-1935, consist of the autograph manuscripts of six works by English author Frank Thomas Bullen, 1857-1915.

The Gourmont mss., 1898-1905, consists of the letters and writings of French Symbolist poet and critic Remy de Gourmont, 1858-1915.

The Wood, S. mss., 1898, consist of seven of the eight black and white watercolor illustrations by Stanley Llewellyn Wood, 1866-1928, for the book Convict 99. A True Story of Penal Servitude by Marie C. and Robert Leighton, published by Grant Richards, London, 1898.

Henry Lester Smith was a long-time professor and administrator at the Indiana University School of Education. In addition to teaching and other administrative positions, Smith served as the dean of the School of Education from 1916 until his retirement in 1946. Throughout his life and career, Smith served in a variety of other roles including as Superintendent of Schools in the Canal Zone, as an active member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, as chair of the local Red Cross chapter, as an active member of the National Education Association, and as Secretary-General of the World Federation of Education Associations. This collection consists largely of correspondence relative to his national and international educational work, materials developed in connection with his teaching, and research materials and writings in his main interest areas of international education, school administration, and character education.

Indiana University faculty members and student groups organized campus springtime May Day celebrations as early as 1897. From 1908 through at least 1928, the Women's Athletic Association and IU Department of Physical Education for Women organized the official campus May Festival, which featured dance exercises by female students and musical performances. This collection contains May Festival programs dating from 1897 through 1928, as well as a student ticket to a 1926 May Day event.

The Pearson mss. II, 1896, 1922-1940, consist of the correspondence and papers of Edmund Lester Pearson, 1880-1937, librarian.

The Davray mss., 1896-1936, consists primarily of letters from British author Sir Edmund William Gosse, 1849-1928, to the French writer and translator, Henry-Durand Davray, 1873-1944.

The Quinn mss., 1896-1930, contains the correspondence of dramatist John Millington Synge, 1871-1909; the final draft of his play, The Playboy of the Western World; and the writings of other authors, chiefly Amory Hare, 1885-1964.

The Pinero mss., 1896-1915, are mainly letters from Sir Arthur Wing Pinero, 1855-1934, dramatist, to Sir George Alexander, 1858-1918, actor and manager.

The Dreiser mss. II, 1896-1910, consists of the correspondence of author Theodore Dreiser, 1871-1945.

Warren d'Azevedo is a retired ethnographer, renowned for his work in anthropology and African studies. D'Azevedo began his research in the 1950s, focusing primarily on African cultures, including the Gola ethnic group of Liberia and the Native American Washoe culture of the Great Basin. This collection consists of d'Azevedo's writings, photographs, memorabilia, and U.S. and Liberian government documents and teaching materials.

The Crawford, H. mss., 1895-1978, consists primarily of the papers and memorabilia of businessman Hanford Crawford, 1854-1930, of St. Louis, Missouri.

The Sinclair mss. II, 1895-1961, consists of copies of correspondence of and other materials relating to novelist Upton Beall Sinclair, 1878-1968.

The Garnett mss. II, 1895-1957, consists primarily of letters from Joseph Conrad, 1857-1924, author, to Edward Garnett, 1868-1937, writer. Materials after 1923 consist of an exchange of letters between Garnett and book dealer Edgar H. Wells about Garnett's copy of The Nigger of the Narcissus in 1925, and a letter from Conrad's son, John Alexander Conrad to Garnett (probably Edward's son David) in 1957 about a Conrad exhibition.

The Busch mss., 1895-1952, are the manuscript scores and papers of Fritz Busch, 1890-1951, German conductor and composer.

The Thompson, F. mss., 1895-1945, consist mainly of writings by Francis Thompson, 1859-1907, poet, and letters from Wilfrid Meynell, 1852-1948, author.

The Alexander mss., 1895-1943, consists of the letters and papers of Indiana University librarian William Albert Alexander, 1875-1943.

The Hemingway mss. III, 1895-1934, collection consists of letters written by primarily Ernest Hemingway and his second wife, Pauline (Pfeiffer) Hemingway, 1895-1951, to the Hemingway family at Oak Park, Illinois.

The collection of Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935), German physician and sex researcher who is credited with founding the German homosexual rights movement. This collection contains contents from a scrapbook compiled by Carl Hoefft with an eye towards eventual publication. Materials include invitations, articles, books, pamphlets, posters, handbills, letters, questionnaires, speeches, legal documents and a horoscope. Most materials are in German.

The Rogers, H.M. mss., 1895-1930, consist of letters from Booth Tarkington, 1869-1946, author, to Herbert Milton Rogers, 1870?-1931, lawyer, of Omaha, Nebraska, and former classmate of Tarkington at Princeton University.

Effa Funk Muhse was Indiana University's first woman to earn a Ph.D. at Indiana University, bestowed upon her in 1908 (Zoology). Prominent scientists Carl Eigenmann and Charles Zeleny advised Muhse's doctoral dissertation, "The Cutaneous Glands of the Common Toad," which was published in the American Journal of Anatomy in 1909. After obtaining her Ph.D., Muhse entered the lecture circuit speaking on topics from the Mendelian laws of heredity to rural sanitation to eugenics, before settling in Washington, D.C. Muhse's laboratory notes and drawings are included in this collection, as well as copies of the papers she published and laboratory slides.

The Oakleaf mss. II, 1895-1909, consist chiefly of requests for railway passes by Joseph Benjamin Oakleaf, 1858-1930, lawyer of Moline, Illinois, to officials of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway Co.: Marcus Lafayette Bell, Benjamin Stickney Cable, Robert Mather and William Thomasson Rankin.

The Verlaine mss., 1895, consists of the letters and writings of author Paul Marie Verlaine, 1844-1896.

Collection consists of the papers of George List (1911-2008), Professor of Folklore, Director of the Inter-American Program in Ethnomusicology (1966-1976), and Director of the Archives of Traditional Music (1954-1976) at Indiana University. His primary research interests included folk music, the traditional music of the Hopi tribes of Northern Arizona, and the music of indigenous tribes in the Caribbean regions of Colombia and the Andes and Amazon regions of Ecuador. This collection includes personal and professional correspondence, publications, research, subject files, audiovisual content, and many of his musical compositions.

The Overstreet mss., 1894-1985, consist of the correspondence, writings, lecture material, and memorabilia of married couple Harry Allen Overstreet and Bonaro Wilkinson Oversteet, who together wrote a bestselling book on Communism.

The Secker mss., 1894-1969, consists primarily of letters to publisher Martin Secker, 1882-1978, from various authors, illustrators, and acquaintances with whom he had business dealings.

Della J. Evans was an Indiana University alumna who graduated in 1897. She was a writer and sometimes wrote under the pseudonym Julian Allen. Collection consists of sketches, correspondence, journals, essays, plays, short stories, and poetry.

The Dreiser mss. IV, 1928-1945, consists of the papers of author Theodore Dreiser, 1871-1945.

The Ralston, Jennie Craven mss., 1894-1950, consists of the papers of Indiana's Democratic National Committeewoman and wife of Samuel Moffett Ralston, Indiana Governor and US Senator, Jennie Craven Ralston, 1861-1954.

The Sutton mss., 1894-1935, consist of letters from Joseph Conrad, 1857-1924, novelist, to various people, and of correspondence between other people about Conrad.

John Flesher Newsom was born in Elizabethtown, IN on September 6, 1869. He attended Indiana University and Leland Stanford Jr. University, earning his PhD in geology from the latter in 1901. He died on October 24, 1928, and is remembered as one of the top geologists of his time. This collection is comprised primarily of correspondence from Newsom to his wife written during his various excavation projects.

The Riley, J.A. mss., 1894-1919, are poems of John Andrew Riley, 1844-?, brother of James Whitcomb Riley.

The Callahan mss., 1894-1898, consists of letters, poems, and photographs from or relating to James Whitcomb Riley.

Robert d'Escourt Atkinson, astronomer, physicist, and inventor, was known around the world for his work in general physics, atomic synthesis and stellar energy, precision astrometry and fundamental astronomy, instrumentation, and relativity. Consists of personal papers, research notes, published papers, and class and lecture notes of Robert d'E. Atkinson in seven series: Pre-IU, 1918-1978, containing papers and correspondence from his college days, World War II, and from his time at the Royal Observatory in England. A great deal of the Royal Observatory records are about the Observatory's move to Hurstmonceux, which Atkinson oversaw. Conferences and Meetings, 1958-1987, containing pamphlets and notes on conferences he attended; Correspondence, 1926-1981, containing personal correspondence with friends and colleagues. Prominently feature are famed astronomer and astrophysicist Henry Norris Russell and correspondence about Herman B Wells Nobel Peace Prize nomination. Publications and Papers, 1893-1980, consists both of Atkinson's papers and papers of others he chose to save; Subject files, 1924-1981, consists of notes, correspondence, and publications on relativity, Mirror Transit Circles, astrometry, and miscellaneous files; Indiana University, 1964-1981, made up of notes and correspondence from his time as a visiting professor at IU; Visual Materials, 1948-1979 containing photographs, glass and plastic slides, charts, microfiche, and a short home film.

The Bowers mss. II, 1867-1960, consists of the papers of newspaperman and diplomat Claude Gernade Bowers, 1878-1958.

Mason E. Hufford was a faculty member of the Indiana University Physics Department from 1912-1953. The papers are organized into six series and reflect primarily his professional research interests.

The McClure mss. VI, 1893-1952, consists of the papers of editor S. S. (Samuel Sidney) McClure, 1857-1949, concerned chiefly with operations of McClure's Magazine, its advertising and circulation rates, and several legal cases in relation to the magazine.

The Rothenstein mss., 1893-1937, are drawings of prominent Englishmen by Sir William Rothenstein, 1872-1945, artist.

The Meynell mss., 1893-1913, consist primarily of letters from English author Katherine Douglas King, ?-1901, to her mentor, author Wilfrid Meynell, 1852-1948.

John Lincoln Nichols was one of Bloomington, Indiana's first architects. He is responsible for creating many of the structures that define Indiana University as well as many residential buildings in the surrounding city. The Student Building, Wylie Hall, and Kirkwood Observatory were all designed by Nichols. This collection is comprised solely of a scrapbook documenting his work (and that of his firm, Nichols & Sons Architects) between the years 1893-1908.

The Bentley, C.F., mss., 1893-1905, consists of papers on banking and currency reform by banker Charles Frederick Bentley, 1843-1908.

Joseph Swain was president of Indiana University from 1893-1902. Organized in two series, the collection primarily consists of incoming correspondence during Swain's tenure. Included are several prominent IU professors such as William Lowe Bryan, David Starr Jordan, and Carl H. Eigenmann as well as a number of well-known public figures.

The Gagg mss., 1893-1902, consists of a letterpress copybook, March 10, 1898-February 10, 1902, of Gagg & Company, Terre Haute, Indiana, dealers in pictures and artists' supplies, and letters, 1893-1896, to George A. Gagg.

The Indiana University Board of Trustees serve as the governing board of the University. Created in 1820, its powers include the capacity to possess all the real and personal property of the university, to allocate the income of the university, and to create or approve all rules necessary to carry these powers into effect. This collection contains agendas, correspondence and reports which support the discussion generated at the official Trustee meetings.

The Red Book was a student and faculty directory published annually by the Indiana University Young Men's Christian Association from 1892-1971. In addition to contact information, the books covered a variety of topics over the years, including information about the YMCA and other campus organizations, academic calendars, tips for new students, local business advertisements, and maps of Bloomington and the IU campus.
