Collections

The Wylie family represented in this collection are all family members or descendents of Indiana University's first president, Andrew Wylie. Many of the earliest family members were closely associated with the university themselves. The collection includes correspondence, financial records, newspaper clippings, obituaries, academic records, journals, scrapbooks, drawings, and poetry. In addition to family affairs, the collection includes information about Indiana University and Bloomington, Indiana, including land deeds and a 19th century account book from Bloomington's McCalla store.

The Wordsworth mss. III, 1806-1956, consist of correspondence of William Wordsworth, 1770-1850, and of Mrs. Dorothy (Wordsworth) Dickson; a photograph of a chalk drawing of Wordsworth; and a photograph of Mrs. Dickson.

The Wordsworth mss. II, 1848-1909, consist of letters and papers of the family of William Wordsworth, 1770-1850, and their friends. They are concerned chiefly with family matters, financial accounts, and the welfare of Dora Wordsworth, 1858-1934, his granddaughter, after the death of her mother.

The Wordsworth mss., 1805-1948 consist of primarily correspondence from William Wordsworth, 1770-1850, to family members, friends, and colleagues.

The Woodward, S.C. mss., 1767-1961, consist of correspondence, autographs and pictures of actors, actresses, managers, dramatists, musicians, and other persons connected with the theatre from the collection of Sidney C. Woodward, journalist.

The Woodward mss., 1844-1905, consist of the correspondence of John Trotter Woodward, 1819-1877, physician of Buena Vista, Monroe County, Indiana, with his family and friends, accompanied by related family materials.

The Woodburn mss., 1795-1942, consist of letters and papers of four generations of the Woodburn family, James Woodburn, 1748-1812, farmer; Dorrance Beatty Woodburn, 1786- 1856, farmer and teacher; James Woodburn, 1817-1865, teacher; and James Albert Woodburn, 1856-1943, historian.

The Woodburn family first settled in Bloomington, Indiana, in 1830, having relocated from Chester County, South Carolina. This collection consists of personal correspondence and other material of family members of James Albert Woodburn (1856-1943), a professor of history at Indiana University (1890-1924), including his father James Woodburn, wife Caroline Gelston Woodburn, brothers Walter E. and Theophilus Wylie Woodburn, son James Gelston Woodburn, and granddaughter Janet Wiecking. Collection materials date from 1848-1978 and notably include Caroline Gelston Woodburn's letters describing her experiences as a new member of the Bloomington and Indiana University communities in the early 1890s, and a photocopy of James Gelston Woodburn's diary ("My Trip Abroad"), which documents his trip to Europe in 1911-1912.

William Wylie Blair entered Indiana University in 1845. He attended through the 1848 school year, but did not graduate. This small collection consists of six essays written by Blair while he was a student at IU as well as an 1848 letter written to Blair and friend Jonathan Dixon Wylie by former classmate James Strean, who was an IU student at the time of writing.

William Tinsley was an architect from Dublin, Ireland; he is well-known in his profession for designing part of the original Indiana University Bloomington campus. This collection consists of a journal written by William Tinsley and two of his children, Charles and Harvey.

The Williams, W. mss., 1788-1857, consist of the letters and The Journal of Penrose, Seaman by William Williams, 1727-1791, painter and novelist.

The Williams, Samuel mss., 1796-1919, consist of letters and papers of Samuel Williams, 1786-1859, and his son, Samuel Wesley Williams, 1827-1928.

The Williams, K.P. mss., 1820-1958, consists of letters and papers of Kenneth Powers Williams, 1887-1958, professor of mathematics at Indiana University and author of Lincoln Finds a General.

The Williams, Jonathan mss., 1738-1869, consist of letters and papers of Jonathan Williams, 1750-1815, merchant and soldier, grand-nephew of Benjamin Franklin and first superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

William Daily was a Methodist minister, and served as president of Indiana University, 1853-1859. The collection includes correspondence, speeches, financial records, administrative records relating to his presidency at Indiana University; most prominent are records relating to charges brought against Daily during his presidency.

William Lowe Bryan was an Indiana University alumnus, professor, and president. This collection includes correspondence, genealogical information, notes, a single journal from 1886, and published and unpublished writings and speeches. Correspondents include family and friends as well as numerous well-known political figures such as Winston Churchill, U.S. Senator Homer Capehart and Eleanor Roosevelt. Frequent correspondents include brother Enoch Albert Bryan, Frank and Sara S. Elliott, Evangeline Lewis, Ruth McNutt, and Herman B Wells.

This collection consists of commercial, agricultural, and medical materials belonging to William Adolphus Ashton (1803-1870), who tried to establish a co-operative community in Franklin County, Indiana in 1834.

The Whitman mss., 1846-1878, consist of correspondence of Mrs. Sarah Helen (Power) Whitman, 1803-1878.

The Whitehouse, F. mss, 1848-1938, consist of architectural renderings, photographs, scratch board sketches, and pen & ink sketches of works produced by noted Chicago architect, Francis M. Whitehouse.

The Wharton mss., 1836-1975 (bulk 1900-1937), consists of the correspondence, diaries, and writings of novelist Edith Newbold Jones Wharton, 1862-1937.

The Wensinger, Arthur S. mss., 1798-2007, consists of the papers of translator and academic Arthur S. Wensinger, 1926- .

The Wells mss., 1831-1938, consists of correspondence from prominent statesmen and authors, some of which is addressed to Shakespearean commentator William Wells.

The Webster mss., 1831-1901, consists primarily of the family correspondence and diaries of Harlow S. Webster, 1815-1902, of LaPorte County, Indiana.

The Weaver, W. mss. II, 1833-2006, consists of the correspondence, writings, research, photographs, and teaching materials pertaining to the life and work of literary critic and translator William Weaver, 1923-2013.

The Watts-Dunton mss., 1832-1914, consists of the writings of critic and author Theodore Watts-Dunton, 1832-1914.

The Warren, V. mss., 1800-1910, consists of materials related to street cries in the United States and Europe.

The War of 1812 mss., 1776-1879, consists of individual items acquired separately either as a gift or purchase from a variety of sources, relating to the War of 1812.

The Wallace mss. III, 1834-1909, consists of microfilm reels of lawyer, soldier, diplomat, and author Lew Wallace and his wife, poet and author Susan Wallace.

The Wallace mss. II, 1847-1938, consists of the literary papers of Lew Wallace, 1827-1905, lawyer, soldier, diplomat, and author.

The U.S. Secretaries of Treasury mss., 1750-1961, consist of letters, documents, and autographs of secretaries of the treasury, government officials, and other prominent people collected by Walter N. Eastburn, 179 South Harrison Street, East Orange, New Jersey.

The U.S. History mss., 1612-1977, consist of individual items acquired separately either as a gift, purchase, transfer, or removal from a variety of sources, relating to the United States. Additions continue to be made.

The United Presbyterian Church mss., 1833-1933, consists of the records of the United Presbyterian Church of Bloomington, Indiana, and its predecessors, the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, the Associate Presbyterian Church and the Reformed Presbyterian Congregation.

The Tuttle mss., 1838-1912, are papers of Elizabeth A. Tuttle, 1823?-1896, nurse and teacher of Colebrook, Ohio, and of Ira Norris Noland, 1844?- , physician, who married Hattie Tuttle, niece of Elizabeth A. Tuttle.

The Trollope mss., 1830-1947, consist of notebooks and a rough draft by Frances (Milton) Trollope, 1780-1863, of Domestic Manners of the Americans; notes by Donald Arthur Smalley, professor, to Domestic Manners of the Americans; and poems and memoranda of Henry Trollope, 1811-1834.

The Tresler mss., 1833-1873, consist of family letters, promissory notes, receipts, deeds, etc., 1833-1862, of Jacob Tresler of Monroe County, Indiana.

Translations mss., ca. 19th-21st centuries, consist primarily of manuscripts of literary translations, either from a foreign language into English or in some cases from English into another language. Also present are letters from authors to translators of their work or from the translators to the authors they translate.

The Thomson mss., 1813-1881, consist of papers of Elizabeth Anna (Williams) Thomson, 1824-1854; her husband, Samuel Steele Thomson, professor of Latin at Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana; and her son-in-law, Theodore H. Ristine, lawyer.

The Thompson mss., 1837-1899, are letters and papers of Richard Wigginton Thompson, 1809-1900, lawyer, judge, Indiana state legislator, U.S. congressman, U.S. secretary of navy.

The Thiébault Family mss., 1733-1872, consist of the papers of mutiple generations of the Thiébault family. The collection contains correspondence, journals, sketches, legal documents, poems, songs, drafts, military papers, autographs, and other miscellaneous objects belonging to the family.

The families represented in this collection are all family members or descendants of Theophilus Adam Wylie of Indiana University. Many of the earliest family members were closely associated with the university themselves. The collection includes legal documents, essays and biographical writings, financial records, business records, newspaper clippings, wedding invitations, academic records, journals, programs and drawings. The collection has been collated together from ephemera discovered amongst correspondence, books from the Theophilus Adam Wylie Library and papers held by Morton Bradley Jr.

The materials in The Svend Holsoe Newspaper Collection are originals, photocopies, and citations from numerous small press newspapers in Liberia and West Africa. Most are from the 19th century and early 20th century.

The materials in The Svend Holsoe Collection: Edward James Roye Materials include research materials and manuscripts of Holsoe's work pertaining to Edward James Roye, Liberia's 5th president.

Theophilus A. Wylie was the cousin of Indiana University's first president Andrew Wylie and spent most of his adult life at IU, beginning in 1836,serving as its librarian, professor, vice president, and at one point, its interim president. Collection consists of Wylie's correspondence, diaries, sermons, drawings, and writings.

The individuals represented in this collection are primarily members of the Theophilus A. Wylie family, immediate and extended. However, there are many hundreds of letters written to the family by friends far and wide. The bulk of the collection dates from 1850 through 1930, roughly the lifespan of Louisa Wylie Boisen, daughter of Theophilus A. and Rebecca D. Wylie, who was largely responsible for preserving the letters. The entire body of correspondence was part of the bequest to Wylie House Museum from Morton C. Bradley, Jr., great-grandson of Theophilus A. Wylie.

Materials collected from the composition studio of Leonard Bernstein, a conductor, composer, and musician active during the mid-20th century. The collection includes recordings, books, scores, awards, artwork, clothing, furniture, and other artifacts pertaining to his professional and personal life.

Materials include scores, monographs, course materials, and papers from the collection of Julius Herford, a choral conductor, teacher, and member of the faculty at Indiana University active during the mid-20th century.

Consists of personal collection of Professor Carleton Hodge, including many 19th and 20th century Bibles and works about the Bible.

Consists of a collection formed by Professor Breon Mitchell of first and early editions of bi–lingual dictionaries of languages throughout the world, including the languages of Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific Rim.

The Tennyson mss., 1841-1954, consist chiefly of correspondence of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1809-1892, poet, and his family.

This collection consists of 139 original reviews of Tennyson's writings and articles about Tennyson, published between 1831 and 1905.

The Tennyson, F. mss., 1841-1922, are the papers of Frederick Tennyson, 1807-1898, poet, and his family.

The Taylor, R. mss., 1804-1848, are typescripts of letters and papers of the Taylor family of Mason County, Kentucky, copied by Myra Esarey, Bloomington, Indiana, on July 7, 1917, from the originals loaned for that purpose by Frances Taylor of Hillsboro, Indiana.

The Stock mss., 1815-1963, consist of papers collected by theater collector Keith Lievesley Stock, b. 1911, former Under-Secretary, Ministry of Power.

The Stevens mss. II, 1805-1911, consist of the correspondence of teacher and editor John Stevens, 1798-1877, and of members of his family.

The Stevens mss., 1749-1916, consist of papers of William Arnold Stevens, 1839-1910, his wife, Mrs. Caroline (Clarke) Stevens, 1834-1916, and members of their respective families.

The Starr mss., 19th century, are holograph copies and originals of vocal and instrumental music and one letter collected by Saul Starr, 1907-1964, physician of Eastchester, New York.

The Starrett mss., 1927-1959, consist of the correspondence of author and journalist Vincent Starrett, 1886-1974, known for his biography The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes and his detective stories.

The Starling mss., 1820-1927, are letters, illustrations, and writings by Hugh Clifford, Joseph Conrad, George Cruikshank, Charles Lever, and William Makepeace Thackeray, collected by Kenyon Law Starling, 1905-1983, businessman, of Dayton, Ohio.

The Sprague mss., 1832-1858, consist primarily of letters from Scottish writer Thomas Dick, 1774-1857, to clergyman William Buell Sprague, 1795-1876, of Albany, New York, chiefly concerning their autograph collections.

The Spencer County, Indiana, History mss., 1822-1861, consist primarily of legal documents related to the history of Spencer County.

The Spain History mss. II, 1493-1870, consist of legal forms, personal wills, governmental papers, and real estate documents relating to 15th-18th century Spain.

The Smith-Marsters mss., 1828-1905, are letters and papers of Hezekiah Smith, 1805-1879, Indiana Methodist circuit rider; his wife, Susan Davis (Marsters) Smith, 1819-1907; his wife's father, Stephen Marsters, 1795-1874, Methodist church elder; and members of their families.

The Smith, H.W. mss., 1817-1987, consists of the letters of reformer Hannah Whitall Smith, 1832-1911, her daughters, art historian Mary Berenson, 1864-1945, and relief organizer Alys Whitall Pearsall Russell, 1867-1951, and her granddaughters, suffragist Ray Strachey, 1887-1940, and psychologist Karin Stephen, 1889–1953.

The Smith, Hamilton mss., 1779-1874, consists of the letters and papers of Hamilton Smith, 1804-1875, lawyer and businessman of Louisville, Kentucky, and Cannelton, Indiana.

The Slavic mss., 1817-1947, consists of letters and documents of Russian and Czech political and literary figures, including Russian author Ivan Alekseevich Bunin, 1870-1953, and Czech politicians Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, 1850-1937, and Jan Garrigue Masaryk, 1886-1948.

The Sinclair mss., 1814-1968, consists of the correspondence, writings, and miscellaneous papers of author Upton Beall Sinclair, 1878-1968.

The Simpson, R. mss., 1743-1876, consists of letters written by author Richard Simpson, 1820-1876, and by members of his family.

The Signers of the Declaration of Independence mss., 1848, consists of materials pertaining to the members of the Continental Congress who drafted and signed the Declaration of Independence.

The Sieveking mss., 1724-1971, consists of the papers of Lancelot (Lance) de Giberne Sieveking, 1896-1974, author, playwright, and pioneer of BBC radio programming.

The Shaw mss., 1833-1908, consists of the letters and papers of William Shaw, 1817-1909, tailor.

The Shakespear family mss., 1825-1944, consists of the correspondence and papers of the families of Olivia Tucker Shakespear, 1863-1938, and her daughter, Dorothy Shakespear Pound, 1886-1973.

The Scribner Family mss., 1813-1940, consists of correspondence, photographs, and memorabilia of the family of Abner Scribner, 1789-1827.

The Scott mss., 1817-1937, consists of the papers of Emmet Hoyt Scott, 1842-1924, businessman and mayor of LaPorte, Indiana, his father, Wiley Huntington Scott, 1796-1872, farmer and hotelkeeper of Nineveh, New York, and his son, Emmet Scott, 1873-1937.

The collection consists of significant periodical articles collected by Ian Fleming, removed from the periodical issues, and separately cased.

The Rumely mss., 1838-1965, are the papers of Edward Aloysius Rumely, 1882-1964, physician, educator, and public relations man, and papers relating to his ancestors. The papers consist of correspondence with prominent people both in Europe and the United States; an autobiography; documents dealing with his arrest for perjury in July, 1918, and the pardon by President Calvin Coolidge on January 19, 1925; material on his many fields of interest; pictures, and printed matter.

The Rumely, F.S. mss. II, 1841-1955, are largely the personal and business papers of Fanny (Scott) Rumely, 1877- 1979, of LaPorte, Indiana.

The Rossetti mss., 1817-1893, consist of the correspondence of poet Christina Georgina Rossetti, 1830- 1894, and her two brothers: painter, poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1828-1882, and author, critic William Michael Rossetti, 1829-1919.

The Root mss., 1815-1888, are papers of Riley Root, 1795-1870, teacher, surveyor, inventor, and author of Journal of Travels from St. Josephs to Oregon with Observations of that Country, together with Some Description of California, its Agricultural Interests, and a Full Description of its Gold Mines. The Ricketts mss., 9th-19th cent., are illuminated medieval and renaissance manuscripts assembled by Coella Lindsay Ricketts, 1859-1941, calligrapher, of Chicago, Illinois. Most of the material relates to religious matters.

The Rawson mss., 1801-1931, are papers of Mrs. Mary Ann (Read) Rawson, (Mrs. William B. Rawson), of Wincobank, near Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.

The Rappite mss., 1810-1939, consist of correspondence, music books, and other papers of the Harmony Society founded by George Rapp, 1757-1847.

The Quaker mss., 1818-1888, consist of minutes of the Blue River Monthly Meeting, 1818-1860, and minutes of the Blue River Quarterly Meeting, 1833-1885.

The Porter mss., 1799-1850, are the papers of Sir Robert Ker Porter, 1777-1842, artist and diplomat, and his sister Jane Porter, 1776-1850, novelist.

The Polke mss., 1809-1868, consist of letters and papers of William Polke, 1775-1843, judge, commissioner for the Michigan road, and perpetrator of the removal of the Potawatomi Indians from their homes and land in Indiana in 1838.

The Poe mss., 1811-1934, contain primarily correspondence written by Edgar Allan Poe to the poet Sarah Helen Whitman, 1803-1878.

The Pliny mss., 9th cent.-1938, are photostats of Pliny manuscripts assembled by Selatie Edgar Stout, 1871-1969, professor of Latin and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Indiana University.

The Pitt/Hollis mss., 1773-1894, consist of correspondence between William Pitt the Elder and Thomas Hollis, as well as letters from Lady Hester Pitt to Hollis.

The Philippine mss. II, 1594-1908, consists of accounts of the lives and deaths of various saints and other religious figures, copies of royal decrees, correspondence, government and military reports, historical accounts, maps, wills and inventories of estates, and a water-color painting.

The Philippine mss. consist of original documents and transcripts relating to the Philippine Islands and the Spanish Roman Catholic missions in East Asia.

The Peters mss., 1844-1967, consist of letters and manuscripts by and about John Addington Symonds, 1840-1893, author, collected by Robert Louis Peters, 1924-2014 of Huntington Beach, California.

The Petersen mss., 1781-1935, is a collection of letters from thirty-nine British writers to various friends and associates.

The Parker mss., 1264-1871, consist of commonplace books, legal records, account books, volumes on heraldry, rhetoric and logic, genealogy, sermons, political tracts, a diary, gazetteer and a jest book in verse.

The Palmer mss., 1835-1888, consists of the correspondence and papers of Joel Palmer, 1810-1881, superintendent of Indian Affairs in Oregon Territory, 1853-1857, and of his brother, Ephraim Palmer, captain of Company B, 1st regiment, Oregon Infantry.

The Owen mss., 1821-1911, consist mainly of letters and papers of Richard Owen, 1810-1890 (son of Robert Owen), professor at Indiana University, and first president of Purdue University, and his descendants.

Indiana family headed by Robert Owen, who purchased Harmony from the Rappites in Posey County, Indiana, with the intention of establishing a utopian society, New Harmony. Owen's three sons were major players in the introduction of geology, biology, and psychology in Indiana and the United States. Collection includes correspondence, speeches, and publications of Robert Owen and his descendants. Most prominently featured in the collection are Owen's sons David Dale, Richard, and Robert Dale. Some materials are photocopies of manuscripts held by other repositories.

The Orr mss., 1809-1871, are the papers of the Orr family who emigrated from County Tyrone, Ireland, to Monroe County, West Virginia in 1821.

The Nordloh mss. consist of over 100 American and English letters, postcards, autographs, and notes spanning the years 1792-1947.

The Noble mss., 1815-1860, consist of letters to members of the family of Noah Noble, 1794-1844, especially to his son-in-law, Alexander H. Davidson, in relation to the settlement of Noah Noble's estate.
