Leon E. Pettiway was a professor of criminology at Indiana University from 1994-2012. One of his major contributions to the field were a product of his research for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) where he employed the assistance of former offenders and recovered drug users to conduct interviews of active drug users and offenders in North Philadelphia. This collection consists of interviews conducted as part of that project as well as the data that resulted from them.

Claire Robertson is an Emeritus Professor of Women's Studies and History at Ohio State University and has been a visiting scholar, lecturer, and adjunct professor at Indiana University, Bloomington at various times since 1978. This collection consists of a portion of Robertson's teaching materials, research, and writings on the history and culture of women in Africa, as well as records related to her career and professional activities at Indiana University.

The Indiana University Trustees serve as the governing board of the university. Created in 1820, the current Board meets six times per year. Among the Board's powers are their capacity to possess all the real and personal property of the university; to expend the income of the university; and to all bylaws necessary to carry these powers into effect. The minutes in this collection include official acts, resolutions, policies, agreements, and other business pertaining to the governance of Indiana University between 1838-1859 and 1883-2017.

The Indiana University Board of Trustees created the Faculty Council in 1947 as a representative council that would conduct the everyday business of the university in close relationship with the administration. With a major university restructuring in 1969, the Council was divided into the current Bloomington Faculty Council and University Faculty Council system. Contained in the collection are the Faculty Council's agendas, minutes, and supporting documents. The collection is organized into four series: Minutes and Agendas, Annual Summaries, Circulars, and Supporting documents.

The Union Board serves as the governing body for the Indiana Memorial Union, which organizes various events and activities for students on the Indiana University Bloomington campus. Established in 1909, the Union Board has since developed into the largest student programming body at Indiana University. The Collection consists of minutes of Union Board meetings and a variety of administrative documents and materials related to past programs, activities, and events.

The Indiana University Student Senate was formed in 1948 due in large part to the influence of IU President Herman B Wells. The Student Senate was charged with upholding the ideals proclaimed in the Student Government Constitution. This collection is predominantly comprised of administrative files such as meetings minutes, bills and resolutions, and subject files covering the period 1938 through 1979.

The origins of the Bloomington Faculty Council can be traced back to a University reorganization begun by university president Elvis J. Stahr. In 1969 the Bloomington Faculty began their own council for policy and academic decisions, as the University Faculty Council became a legislative body for all faculty in the Indiana University system. This collection consists of the agendas, minutes, circulars and supporting documents of the Bloomington Faculty Council, the governing body of the university faculty on the Indiana University -Bloomington campus. The collection is organized into six series: Agendas, Minutes, Circulars, Supporting documents, Committee Files, and Subject Files.

Student government at Indiana University was officially formed in April 1948 due in large part to the influence of IU President Herman B Wells. Following a series of name changes, student government in 1973 became known as the Indiana University Student Association (IUSA). In 2019 they changed their name again to Indiana University Student Government (IUSG). This collection consists of the records of the IUSA including: Meeting minutes and agendas; resolutions; administrative files; records of the IUSA President , Vice-President for Senate/ Congress, Vice- President for Administration, Treasurer and the Supreme Court; association, committee and department files; and issue, project and subject files. These records primarily cover the period from 1973-2010.

This collection consists of the agendas, minutes, circulars and supporting documents of the University Faculty Council, the governing body of the university faculty throughout the Indiana University system.

The Commission on Multicultural Understanding was established in 1982 at Indiana University. The organization strove to make IU an environment in which students could feel safe and at home, regardless of race, age, religion, ability, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status. The collection consists of minutes, reports, and correspondence regarding the yearly operation of the organization as well as details audiovisual and other educational resources on topics such as race, religion, gender identity, sexual identity, sexuality, and rape awareness.

The University Council was created by a vote of the general faculty on 10 January 1929. The purpose of this group was to consider any question of academic policy affecting the University as a whole. This collection is organized into three series: Minutes, Reports and recommendations, and Memos.

The Strategic Directions Charter is an initiative enacted by Indiana University President Myles Brand in 1995 in response to acknowledged fundamental changes in the environment for higher education. The Charter's goal is to enact institutional changes and plans which will sustain the University's excellence, enabling it to emerge as a model for America's New Public University. A steering committee and topical task forces were created to guide Strategic Directions Charter initiatives and review proposed projects for funding. The collection includes administrative documents as well as files from funded and un-funded proposals submitted for rounds one, two, and three (1996-1998) of the Strategic Directions Charter initiative.

One of the two chief literary societies on campus, the Athenian Society was founded at Indiana University in 1830. Literary societies gave students practice in speaking and writing through regular orations, essays, and debates, as well as filling a social role. Collection consists of minutes, correspondence, publications, addresses, and announcements. The Publication series includes copies of the Athenian, a monthly periodical of writings submitted by members of the Athenian Society that were of "a high literary character," including what the editors considered "chaste and elevated literature." These span December 1845 through November 1846. Most prominent in the collection are the minutes from the weekly meeting of the Society.

General meetings of the Indiana University faculty began in 1835, to discuss the industriousness of its students, calling student rolls, and hearing reports on the work and standing of each of the students. Disciplinary measures, dismissals, and exams for students were also discussed during many of the meetings throughout the nineteenth century. By the 1920s, the faculty had grown to such a point that it was necessary to create a representative body of the faculty, but the faculty as a whole continued to meet with some regularity. Today the faculty body rarely meet, but may be convened by the IU president, the Secretary of the University Faculty Council, or on petition signed by voting faculty members numbering no less than 5% of all voting faculty members.

The "Indiana Cooler" storage ring at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility (IUCF) was a storage ring for light ions, consisting of a circular magnet lattice of about 100 meters in circumference. The storage ring was built to facilitate the novel technology of electron cooling, which made possible the use of an internal target and enabled unprecedented experiments in nuclear research. The collection includes research notes, log books, administrative documents, correspondence, research proposals, photographs, and illustrations related to the operations of the Cooler storage ring and the nuclear research output that was produced with the use of the Cooler.

David H. Weaver was a professor in the Indiana University School of Journalism from 1974 to 2011. As a professor, he had a primary focus on teaching research methods and political communication to graduate students and in his earlier years, beginning news writing and editing and public opinion to undergraduates. The content of this collection consists of subject files relating to his publications, research, and professional activities and includes correspondence, drafts and publications, press releases, as well as conference and committee files.

Joseph C. Muhler was an assistant professor of chemistry at Indiana University from 1951 to 1972, and research professor of dental science and director of the School of Dentistry's Dental Research Institute from 1972 until his retirement in 1984. Muhler was the leader of the team that developed the original formula for Crest toothpaste in the 1950s, and his interests included that of preventative dentistry and its practices. The collection consists primarily of papers related to Dr. Muhler's research interests and his activities at IU, including original research, publications, correspondence, teaching files, student theses and materials relating to professional organizations. Records related to his Crest research are included in the collection.

Howard Mehlinger served as a professor within the School of Education from 1965 until his retirement in 1997, at which time he was granted the title Professor Emeritus of Education. During his tenure at IU he served in two major administrative positions: Dean of the School of Education from 1981 to 1989 and as Director for the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) from 1993 to 1999. His major research foci included: issues involving Soviet-United States education and globalization, technology's role in the classroom, and high school social studies education. The content of this collection consists of papers documenting various IU and personal research initiatives, projects, and consulting positions; publications and speaking engagements; professional files; syllabi, reading lists, and documents for various courses, workshops, and seminars he taught at both IU and Lawrence High School in Lawrence, Kansas; and personal, professional, and institutional correspondence.

W. Edson Richmond was a professor in both English and Folklore, and Acting Director of the Folklore Institute (1981-1982) at Indiana University, Bloomington, from 1945 until 1986. This collection documents Richmond's research and publishing in the area of Norwegian and Scandinavian language and culture as well as other academic activities, such as instruction and academic advising, service on departmental and professional committees, and participation in folklore conferences and professional societies. Types of material present in the collection include published and unpublished articles, research and instruction notes, correspondence, and programs and brochures.

Collection consists of 15 cubic feet of records from the departments under the Division of Biological Sciences spanning 1906-1988. The records are organized in a single series, Subject files. Because the records were in great disarray and the original order was unknown, it was decided it was best to simply arrange the records alphabetically rather than attempt to separate out the various departments. Even so, the collection provides a wealth of information on scientific studies at Indiana University, as the collection consists of correspondence, reports, committee files and more, some dating prior to the development of the Division. The Auxiliary Services Office oversaw offices and departments at Indiana University that were self-supporting and encompassed the Auditorium, Bookstore, Campus Bus Service, Campus Foods, Communications, Halls of Residence, Indiana Memorial Union Building (IMU), Motor Pool and Parking Operations. Over the years, Auxiliary Services had several name changes. Those reflected in the records of this collection include Auxiliary Services, Business Manager's Office, and Service Enterprises. Records in this collection include, but are not limited to, correspondence, committee files, departmental files, reports and budgets.

Dr. John W. Ryan was the fourteenth president of Indiana University, serving from 1971 until 1987. This collection is comprised of his speeches.

Kenneth R.R. Gros Louis was a long time Indiana University administrator. Gros Louis served as Vice President of the entire Indiana University multi-campus system as well as Chancellor of the Bloomington campus. In 1994 Indiana University President, Myles Brand, expanded Gros Louis' role in the university's administration changing his Vice Presidential title to Vice President for Academic Affairs. The collection consists of speeches made by Gros Louis during his academic career between 1979 and 2011.

The American Association of University Women, Bloomington Branch was established on 12 February 1913 as the Association of Collegiate Alumnae with 60 charter members. They later became the AAUW in 1921. The goal of the group was to improve the status of women in higher education and to debunk myths concerning women academics. This collection is comprised of correspondence, financial records, governance files, meeting notes, reports, and scrapbooks. The collection also contains numerous subject files including those relating specifically to the Bloomington branch, and those relating to the Indiana and national divisions of the organization. These files contain materials on the history of the organization, various programs, committees, membership, conventions, and publications relating to the organization.

In 1938, Indiana University began to engage in radio activities. A room was set aside for use as a studio and control room, and a radio director and program director were hired. For years, radio classes were taught through several already established departments such as Speech and Journalism. At the Board of Trustees September 20, 1945 meeting, they approved the establishment of a Dept. of Radio as an "unattached" department under the Dean of Faculties. In 1953 it became the Department of Radio and Television within the College of Arts and Sciences and in 1974 the Department of Telecommunications. This collection contains the department chair's records from 1939-1963 and is comprised of correspondence, budgetary information, annual reports, information on various radio and television stations, and subject files. Records span the tenures of chairs Harry Skornia (1942-1953) and Elmer Sulzer (1954-1964).

The Center for Survey Research was established at Indiana University Bloomington in 1981. Its primary function is to serve the academic community and policy researchers through its commitment to high quality survey research. Collection consists of surveys, correspondence, and papers related to surveys performed by the Center and its affiliates. Subjects are varied, but prominent the collection are records related to the Indiana Poll as well as surveys conducted for NASA, 1985-2005.

Robert F. Borkenstein worked in various capacities with the Indiana State Police in collaboration with Indiana University before retiring in 1958 and coming to IU full time, serving as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Police Administration until his retirement in 1987. He played a major role in developing the department, which was renamed the Department of Forensic Studies in 1970 and again renamed the Department of Criminal Justice in 1985. Borkenstein was a prolific figure in the fields of forensic science and traffic safety; he is well known for inventing the Breathalyzer in 1954 and for research efforts into blood alcohol concentration through the Grand Rapids Study in the 1960s. This collection consists of biographical documents, research and professional materials, instruments, and subject files. Included are files and instruments related to Borkenstein's research and development of several of his breath test inventions, including the Breathalyzer.

Rudy Pozzatti was on the faculty at Indiana University from 1956-1991 and upon his retirement, received the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus. In 1979, he helped found the Echo Press, a printmaking workship in Bloomington. Prof. Pozzatti was recognized as one of the prominent printmakers in the country and has works exhibited throughout the world. This collection consists of Prof. Pozzatti's biographical information, show and exhibition materials, as well as personal correspondence spanning over 50 years. Also included are photographs of his works, plates and woodblocks as well as some original posters. There are no files related to his teaching.

Founded in 1972, the Program for Advanced Studies in Institution Building and Technical Assistance Methodology (PASITAM) was supported by a grant by the Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities (MUCIA) and represented Indiana University's major contribution to that program. PASITAM's mission was to to acquire, develop, and disseminate information about project design and implementation. Collection is organized in three series: Project, containing files maintained for use in developing their training materials and newsletters; Analytical Skills Workshop, containing files pertaining to PASITAM's major project which produced a series of training modules; and Reports, consisting of PASITAM's annual reports.

Edward Everett Edwards was a researcher and educator in the area of finance and education. As a long-time friend and colleague of Herman B Wells, he became involved in the University first as a student, then as Wells's assistant and as a professor of finance. This collection contains papers that were created or collected chiefly during his time as assistant to Wells, including his research for the University and his work with professional organizations like the Indiana Banker's Association.

The Graduate School at Indiana University was founded, upon the recommendation of the Committee on Advanced Degrees, on February 1, 1904. For many years, a Research Committee handled the many graduate research funding requests until the 1977-1978 school year, when the Office of Research and Graduate Development (R&GD) was established to govern higher research at IU. In 1989, R&GD merged with the University Graduate School to become Research and the University Graduate School (RUGS). To lead this program, George Walker was appointed Dean of the Graduate School and Associate Vice President for Research. The merger combined the financial resources of the two offices while unloading some of the recordkeeping and admission duties onto the individual schools within the university. As a result, RUGS administrators were better able to work on cultivating financial resources and to study graduate student concerns. Prominent in the collection are records reflecting the heavy research mission of the university, such as the files on the many research centers and institutions, which comprises more than half of the collection.

Before becoming president of Indiana University, Herman B Wells served as an assistant cashier at the National Bank of Lebanon before going on to work for the Indiana Bankers Association, the Indiana Commission for Financial Institutions, and the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions. He was named dean of the Indiana University School of Business administration in 1935 by IU President William Lowe Bryan. In 1937 he was named acting president of the university and president the following year, a position he held until 1962. Upon his retirement, IU created the position of University Chancellor, which Dr. Wells held until his death in 2000. This collection consists of Wells' personal papers and includes papers pertaining to his family and personal finances, his activities in the banking profession, his work in Germany for the United States government after World War II, and to his research and teaching and professional activities as a member of the faculty of Indiana University.

The Indiana University Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology was formally established in 2000 through the merging of the Department of Folklore (1978-2000) and the Ethnomusicology Institute (1980-2000) and is the parent department of the IU Folklore Institute and IU Ethnomusicology Institute. This collection contains administrative files, subject files, correspondence, files and audio recordings of the Special Projects unit, grant and budget information, and conference files produced by the department and its affiliated institutes from 1942 through 2010.

David Starr Jordan joined the IU faculty in 1879 as a professor of natural history. In 1885 at the age of 34, Jordan was appointed President of Indiana University. He served in that position until 1891 when he left IU to become the first president of the newly established Stanford University. The records of his presidency consist primarily of administrative files alphabetically arranged. The records also contain a few of Jordan's writings and addresses.

Sarah Parke Morrison became the first woman admitted to Indiana University in 1867. Collection consists of personal papers of Sarah Parke Morrison in three series: Correspondence, 1897-1913, consisting primarily of outgoing correspondence. Frequent correspondents include former Indiana University President William Lowe Bryan and Registrar John W. Cravens. The correspondence all dates from the years after she left IU and much of it discusses her desire that women become members of the various University boards. Schedules, 1855-1856, consists of a single schedule of a typical day for Morrison at the Western Female College; and Writings, 1911-1912, includes a handwritten account of Morrison's entrance and experience as the first female student at IU and a small pamphlet of Morrison's poetry published in 1912.

World-renowned as a glaze chemist and ceramist, Karl Martz joined the faculty of the new School of Fine Arts at Indiana University in 1945, where he remained until 1977. This collection consists of correspondence, exhibition and teaching material, and most prominently, notebooks compiled by Martz relating to the chemistry of ceramics.

Allen Day Grimshaw was a Professor of Sociology at IU from 1959-1994. The collection consists primarily of his research, published works, and teaching files as they relate to IU.

Howard Gest was a professor of Microbiology and an adjunct professor of History and Philosophy of Science at Indiana University who specialized in microbial psychology and metabolism. The collection consists of Gest's published work, research notes, correspondence and his teaching and lecturing notes during his tenure at Indiana University.

This collection consists of the family papers of Indiana University alumni John and Hilda Jay. The collection primarily consists of correspondence between John, Hilda, and family or friends largely spanning 1939-2002; personal files containing educational materials, a journal, and a scrapbook; as well as several home movies from circa 1939-1946.

William Daily was a Methodist minister, and served as president of Indiana University, 1853-1859. The collection includes correspondence, speeches, financial records, administrative records relating to his presidency at Indiana University; most prominent are records relating to charges brought against Daily during his presidency.

Theophilus A. Wylie was the cousin of Indiana University's first president Andrew Wylie and spent most of his adult life at IU, beginning in 1836,serving as its librarian, professor, vice president, and at one point, its interim president. Collection consists of Wylie's correspondence, diaries, sermons, drawings, and writings.

Lemuel Moss served as president of Indiana University from 1875-1884. This collection consists of records from his tenure and is organized into a single series, Administrative files.

Horace Porter Goff was an Indiana University alumnus who served during World War I in France with the 30th Engineer Regiment (Gas and Flame). This collection consists of correspondence, a diary, a transcription of the correspondence and diary with annotations, discharge papers, and a 1918 IU commencement program.

Records dating from the tenure of Indiana University President John Coulter. Organized into two series, the collection primarily consists of incoming correspondence during Coulter's tenure.

The Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences faculty began meeting formally in 1927. The group reviewed policies, curriculum, as well as statistics pertaining to admission, enrollment, and matriculation. The College faculty no longer meet. Collection consists of the College of Arts and Sciences faculty meeting minutes and related documents dating from 1927-1958.

Both graduates of the University of California, Berkeley, Barbara and Charles Jelavich were hired at Indiana University in 1962 as specialists in Eastern European History by then Chair of the History Department Robert Byrnes. The majority of the collection reflects the work of Barbara while a small portion of the work of Charles is included with publications.

Robert d'Escourt Atkinson, astronomer, physicist, and inventor, was known around the world for his work in general physics, atomic synthesis and stellar energy, precision astrometry and fundamental astronomy, instrumentation, and relativity. Consists of personal papers, research notes, published papers, and class and lecture notes of Robert d'E. Atkinson in seven series: Pre-IU, 1918-1978, containing papers and correspondence from his college days, World War II, and from his time at the Royal Observatory in England. A great deal of the Royal Observatory records are about the Observatory's move to Hurstmonceux, which Atkinson oversaw. Conferences and Meetings, 1958-1987, containing pamphlets and notes on conferences he attended; Correspondence, 1926-1981, containing personal correspondence with friends and colleagues. Prominently feature are famed astronomer and astrophysicist Henry Norris Russell and correspondence about Herman B Wells Nobel Peace Prize nomination. Publications and Papers, 1893-1980, consists both of Atkinson's papers and papers of others he chose to save; Subject files, 1924-1981, consists of notes, correspondence, and publications on relativity, Mirror Transit Circles, astrometry, and miscellaneous files; Indiana University, 1964-1981, made up of notes and correspondence from his time as a visiting professor at IU; Visual Materials, 1948-1979 containing photographs, glass and plastic slides, charts, microfiche, and a short home film.

The Population Institute for Research and Training was founded at Indiana University in 1986 as a center for interdisciplinary population studies. The Center's purpose was to facilitate research and training activities related to demography including courses, seminars, and research projects. This collection contains administrative files, information on courses and seminars, and various working papers.

John W. Ryan served as Indiana University's president for 16 years. This collection includes correspondence files, and administrative records related to the management of various offices and departments on campus and of the regional campuses.

Thomas Sebeok (1920-2001) was an internationally renowned semiotician who taught at Indiana University from 1943 to 2001. This collection documents Sebeok's career at Indiana University and contains correspondence, subject files, publications, research and grant materials, and departmental and committee records.

Robert F. Byrnes was a Professor of History at Indiana University from 1956 to 1988 and served as director of the Russian and East European Institute at IU from 1959-1962 and 1971-1975. Byrnes specialized in the study of Russian conservative thought, Russian historical writing, anti-Semitism in France and Europe, the Soviet role in world affairs after World War II, American policy toward Eastern Europe, and Soviet American relations. In addition Byrnes made significant contributions to the development of Slavic studies programs in the United States and the opening of academic exchanges with the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. The collection consists of the personal papers of Dr. Byrnes with an emphasis on his work with Radio Free Europe and the Inter-University Committee on Travel Grants as well as his other professional activities and includes research files, correspondence, reports, minutes, manuscripts, reviews, teaching files, films, sound recordings, and photographs.

William Earl Brown was a native of Bloomington, Indiana, where he completed his primary and secondary education. He continued his education at IU and earned a Bachelor's degree in History. This collection consists of his school books and class work from the 4th grade to the 12th grade, as well as records of the courses he took as a student at IU and papers he wrote for various classes.

In 1914, the Bureau of Public Discussion was established as a part of the Extension Division of Indiana University to provide information on and to stimulate the intelligent discussion of current political, economic and social questions within the state. The collection consists of records from Robert Hattery's tenure as Director of the Bureau and includes correspondence, records related to Bureau programs, brochures, reports, administrative files, financial records, and course files.

The Indiana University Folklore Archives was established in 1956 by Richard M. Dorson of the Indiana University Folklore Institute and grew to comprise 40,000 field collections gathered in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky, before closing in 1990. This collection contains the Folklore Archives' administrative files, special collections of prominent folklorists' research materials, reprints of journal articles, bibliographies, a collection of folksongs, and subject files and index cards on topics that include beliefs, customs, games, jokes, and legends.

Edward Grant, a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History and History and Philosophy of Science taught at Indiana University for over thirty years. This collection consists of 24.6 cubic of Edward Grant's papers. Consists of correspondence, research, drafts, publications, and course and lecture notes. By far the largest series in the collection is the Teaching series and includes materials from Grant's years teaching as a graduate student at the Univ. of Wisconsin and then later at Indiana. The bulk of the series, though, consists of folders relating to the courses he taught in the IU Dept. of History and Philosophy of Science. The Publications series contains information on many of Grant's publications, including his books Much ado about nothing and Source book in medieval science.

The Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities (MUCIA) was established in 1964 with the support of a grant from the Ford Foundation. This organization worked to foster international cooperation, shared education, and economic development through the establishment of institutions of higher education in countries overseas. This collection consists of MUCIA Administrative files, such as meeting minutes and agendas, correspondence, and files from the Program for Advanced Study in Institution-Building and Technical Assistance Methodology (PASITAM). Also included are the records, reports, correspondence, and research relating to the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), an institute of higher education focusing on public administration in Thailand administered by Indiana University from 1966-1977.

Anna Borovkoff was a Resident Lecturer in Russian for the Indiana University Department of Slavic Languages and Literature from 1960-1974. The collection consists of Borovkoff's teaching manuals for the Russian language.

Collection consists of the administrative records of the Auditorium manager spanning 1941-1946. The Administration series covers the managerial decisions and other administrative records of the Auditorium between the years 1941 and 1944 and is arranged alphabetically by subject. Included in the Administration series is a Correspondence subseries organized alphabetically. Prominent correspondents include Krauss and Ward G. Biddle who served as Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Union Board Director, and Chairman of the Dedication Committee. The Events series covers all of the performances, conferences and university related events between the years 1941 and 1946, and is arranged in chronological order.

Henry Lester Smith was a long-time professor and administrator at the Indiana University School of Education. In addition to teaching and other administrative positions, Smith served as the dean of the School of Education from 1916 until his retirement in 1946. Throughout his life and career, Smith served in a variety of other roles including as Superintendent of Schools in the Canal Zone, as an active member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, as chair of the local Red Cross chapter, as an active member of the National Education Association, and as Secretary-General of the World Federation of Education Associations. This collection consists largely of correspondence relative to his national and international educational work, materials developed in connection with his teaching, and research materials and writings in his main interest areas of international education, school administration, and character education.

This collection contains the personal papers of Marshal H. Wrubel, Professor of Astronomy at Indiana University. Professor Wrubel was affiliated with the University from 1950 until his death in 1968, and contributed papers to leading scientific publications on various topics such as stellar interiors, stellar atmospheres, and hydromagnetics. This collection houses Wrubel's papers, including correspondence, files on service activities, and research notes. The collection spans 1950 to 1969, although many of his research notes are undated.

Collection consists of 3 cubic feet of records created by Charles F. Voegelin and Erminie Wheeler-Voegelin for their Great Lakes - Ohio Valley Ethnohistorical Research Project. Prominently featured in the collection are correspondence and reports prepared for the U.S. Dept. of Justice.

Lemuel Moss was Indiana University President 1875-1884. He left amidst a scandal involving himself and a female professor at the university. This small collection consists of correspondence with Rev. and Mrs. J. R. Scott and a poem Moss wrote for his wife in celebration of their 25th wedding anniversary.

Frank N. Young was a professor of zoology and biology at Indiana University. His research and teaching interests included ecology, entomology, and parasitology, but much of his work focused specifically on water beetles. Collection consists of correspondence, research files, publications, including his dissertation The water beetles of Florida, committee files, and teaching files.

Karl F. Schuessler graduated at Indiana University in 1947 with a Ph.D. in sociology. Soon after his graduation, he joined the faculty at Indiana University, where he remained until his retirement in 1985. This collection contains Schuessler's published articles, manuscripts, correspondence, and subject files.

Charles R. Forker was a professor of English at Indiana University from 1959 to 1992. He was a known Shakespeare scholar and teacher. Collection consists of Forker's correspondence, research, teaching files, and publications.

The Indiana University Folklore Institute is an active center of folklore scholarship and has a long history of collecting oral literature and arts. This collection consists of papers written on a variety of topics by students taking courses in the Folklore Institute. These papers are dated roughly between 1967 through the early 2010s.

Marvin Carmack was a professor of chemistry at Indiana University who specialized in organic chemistry and the study of lithospermum ruderale, among other research interests. The collection consists of Carmack's personal and professional correspondence, extensive research notes from his two university appointments and numerous private laboratory work, teaching materials from a variety of classes he taught as well as research notes from some of his students.

Carlos O. Miller was a faculty member within the Department of Biology at Indiana University from 1957 until his retirement in 1987. This collection includes publications, research notes, and correspondence.

The School of Business at Indiana University was established in 1920 as the School of Commerce and Finance, with William A. Rawles as dean. Nine deans have since followed to the present tenure of Dean Idalene Kesner. Collection consists of correspondence, administrative files, and faculty announcements from John E. Rau's tenure as dean of the School of Business, 1993-1996.

Leo F. Solt, professor emeritus of History and dean of the University Graduate School, taught at the University of Iowa and the University of Massachusetts before joining the Indiana University faculty in 1955. In 1978 he was named dean of the University Graduate School, a position he held until 1987. The collection consists of biographical records, research notes, correspondence, and lecture notes.

The Indiana University Bloomington Professional Staff Council became an official university organization on October 16, 1985. This representative council was created to empower the many professional staff members at the university by giving them a voice in university policies and actions that affect the working conditions, services, and benefits of their employment. The bulk of the collection consists of meeting minutes as well as information concerning the many committees, task forces, and university organizations that affect the daily operations and policies of the Professional Staff Council.

In 1953, Warren Everett Roberts became the first person to earn a PhD in Folklore in the United States. He taught at Indiana University from 1949-1994 and was one of the founders of the study of American "folklife" and material culture. The collection represents Roberts' research of vernacular architecture and regional survey of material culture and craftsmanship, particularly in southern Indiana. Collection consists of research files, teaching files, photographs, photographic negatives and slides, publications, and correspondence.

Daniel Kirkwood was an astronomer and professor of mathematics at Indiana University almost continuously from 1856 until 1886. Collection consists of papers of Daniel Kirkwood in two series: Correspondence and Publications. Correspondence, 1864-1895, consists of both incoming and outgoing correspondence. Some noted correspondents are Cyrus Nutt, president of Indiana University 1860-1875, Joseph Swain, IU president, 1893-1902, astronomer Sherburne W. Burnham, and Arthur C. Mellette, governor of the Dakota Territory from 1861-1889. The Publications series, 1864-1891, consists of articles written by Kirkwood. Several of the publications are photocopies of the originals.

Frank T. Gucker was the Dean of Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences from 1951-1965. During his tenure as Dean the College of Arts and Sciences tripled in size. He also launched the College's study of foreign areas in 1956 and helped to establish the department of History and Philosophy of Science in 1958. The collection consists of records created and collected by Gucker during his tenure as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Uruguay Mechanical and Electronic Engineering Education Program was sponsored by the Indiana University School of Education through a grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The contract ran from 1964-1966 and focused on upgrading the mechanical and electronic engineering divisions of the Universidad Del Trabajo in Montevideo, Uruguay. This collection contains budget information, program reports, personnel files, and correspondence.

Charlie Nelms (b. 1946) served in executive leadership roles for the Indiana University system for a total of twenty-four years between 1978 and 2007. This collection spans Nelms' personal life and professional career in university administration at IU and other institutions. The collection includes writings, correspondence, publications and reports, and ephemera.

Herman B Wells served as President of Indiana University 1938-1962. Consists of speeches given by Herman B Wells during his term as President of Indiana University, including 1937, when he served as interim President.

Sally Lied received her M.S. in Education from Indiana University in 1963, her Ed.D in 1972 and J.D. in 1974. She also worked for the university as a residential counselor at Foster Quadrangle and later director of the Foster Project. This collection includes materials pertaining to social movements and residential programs at IU in the late 1960s, as well as materials from Robert F. Kennedy's presidential campaign in 1968.

Roy Sieber was a historian of African art who taught at Indiana University Bloomington from 1962 through 1983. Having been the first person to receive a degree in African art in the United States, Sieber was the creator of the study of African art history in the United States. This collection contains prints of his black and white photographs of African art in use and on display, slides of African art in museums, and annotated bibliographies written by his students exploring specific aspects of art in Africa.

The object of the Century Literary Club was to promote literary and social culture for non-fraternity, male students of the university. The Century Literary Club records are divided into three series: governing files, minutes, and financial records.

Herman T. Briscoe was the first Dean of Faculties at Indiana University. The new position assumed some of the responsibilties once overseen by the university president. This collection consists of correspondence, reports, committee files, minutes, and memos.

This collection consists of the family papers of Indiana University professor Cecilia Hennel Hendricks spanning the period from 1839 through 1970. Included are papers relating to the academic careers of Cecilia, Associate Professor of English, and her sister Cora, Professor of Mathematics at Indiana University, as well as manuscripts and writings by both women. Also found in the collection are papers and correspondence of family members: father Joseph B. Hennel, mother Anna M. Thuman Hennel, Cecilia's husband John Hendricks, and sister Edith Hennel Ellis.

Herman B Wells was named acting president of Indiana University in 1937 and then president the following year. He served as president until June 30, 1962. After his retirement from the role of president, IU created the position of University Chancellor, a position which Dr. Wells held until his death in 2000. This collection is made up of Wells' speeches given while he served in his role as Chancellor. Speeches include baccalaureate and commencement statements, Sigma Nu fraternity addresses, new building dedications, and a wide variety of speeches, introductions, addresses, and dedications given at Indiana University student and faculty events, as well as local community events.

Soprano Virginia MacWatters was known not only for her impressive operatic career during which she performed in opera houses throughout the United States, Europe, and South America, but also for her dedication to teaching. In 1957 she joined the voice faculty of the Indiana University School of Music where she remained until her retirement in 1982. She was awarded the prestigious Frederic Bachman Lieber Memorial Award for excellence in teaching in 1979. The collection consists of biographical materials, clippings, programs, teaching files, correspondence, photographs, and scrapbooks.

Collection consists of the papers of George List (1911-2008), Professor of Folklore, Director of the Inter-American Program in Ethnomusicology (1966-1976), and Director of the Archives of Traditional Music (1954-1976) at Indiana University. His primary research interests included folk music, the traditional music of the Hopi tribes of Northern Arizona, and the music of indigenous tribes in the Caribbean regions of Colombia and the Andes and Amazon regions of Ecuador. This collection includes personal and professional correspondence, publications, research, subject files, audiovisual content, and many of his musical compositions.

Richard S. Westfall was a professor of History, History of Science, and Philosophy of Science at Indiana University from 1963 to 1989. The collection consists of research notes, copies of published works, lecture notes, and class notes related to Richard S. Westfall's research on the scientific revolution in Europe, especially his biography of Newton. Also includes material on Galileo, mechanics, dynamics, and related topics. Includes a small amount of biographical and family material.

Born in 1927, John R. Kreuger taught Turkic and Mongolian languages in the department of Uralic and Altaic Studies at Indiana University Bloomington from 1962-1985. During his career he was an active member of the Mongolia Society and accomplished writer, translator and editor of works relating to Central Asian languages. The collection consists of correspondence files relating to his professional and personal life and written works spanning his entire career.

Co-sponsored by the Indiana University Alumni Association and Indiana University Bloomington Continuing Studies, Mini University began in 1972 as a unique educational and vacation experience for adults. The collection consists of administrative files, directories and working papers, and visual materials.

Lynton K. Caldwell was an assistant professor of government at Indiana University South Bend from 1939-1944 and returned to Indiana University Bloomington in 1965, where he taught political science as well as public and environmental affairs until his retirement in 1984 as the Arthur F. Bentley Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Professor Emeritus of Public and Environmental Affairs. Caldwell was a recognized authority on environmental policy. His papers include a large amount of published works, but also contain correspondence and material related to conferences and professional organizations.

James Madison is the Thomas and Kathryn Miller Professor Emeritus of History at Indiana University. He graduated from Indiana University and has spent nearly his entire career teaching at IU. The collection largely consists of materials relating to his written works and extensive service activities both at IU and within the state. Of particular interest are the notes and drafts for his books Eli Lilly: A Life, 1885-1977 (1989), Indiana Through Tradition and Change (1982), and The Indiana Way: A State History (1986). The collection also contains correspondence, class syllabi, various committee materials, and materials related to his activities within the History Department.

Henry Radford Hope was an internationally acclaimed art critic and historian who joined the Indiana University faculty in 1941. His tenure included 27 years as the chair of the School of Fine Arts as well as ten years as the director of the Indiana University Art Museum from 1961 to 1971. The collection is comprised of publication and research files, correspondence, and teaching materials.

Hubert C. Heffner was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Speech, Theatre, and Dramatic Literature at Indiana University. After teaching at several institutions across the United States and England, he settled in Bloomington in 1955. In addition to his teaching responsibilities within the Dept. of Speech and Theatre, Heffner was acting director of the Indiana University Theatre from 1959-60 and 1970-71, and he was involved with the Indiana Theatre Circle. He retired in 1971 but continued as an occasional guest lecturer at IUB until his death in 1985. The collection consists of lecture notes, classroom handouts and teaching aids, Heffner's correspondence and personal writings, book reviews written by Heffner and files on various organizations to which he belonged throughout his career. Prominent in the teaching materials are Heffner's files on drama, especially American drama, and individual playwrights.

Paul A. Pietsch was a Professor in the School of Optometry and an Adjunct Professor of Anatomy at Indiana University from 1970 until his retirement in 1994. His research concentrated on the connections between the brain, mind, and memory, as well as limb regeneration. The collection contains his teaching materials, subject files, professional and academic correspondence, and a wide array of research materials, including publications, visual materials, and research notebooks.

Andrew Wylie assumed the position as the first president of Indiana College in 1829, and he died on 11 November 1851 of pneumonia which he developed after accidentally cutting his leg while chopping wood. This collection consists of Andrew Wylie's personal papers, and includes records documenting Wylie's tenure at Jefferson and Washington Colleges; correspondence with family and professional colleagues; Wylie's sermons, lectures, and writings; bills, contracts, and receipts relating primarily to building and maintaining the family residence; and biographical information on Wylie.

David F. Finley was a Monroe County, Indiana, businessman and landowner during the nineteenth century. His papers are organized into six series: Property records; Tax records and appraisments; Receipts; Correspondence; County highway and building records; and Subject files. Information about Finley's Indiana and Kansas properties is most prominent in the collection.

The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is a nationwide organization established in 1915, and is open to membership by faculty, librarians, and academic professionals at accredited public and private colleges and universities. Its mission is to advance academic freedom and shared governance, to define professional values and standards within higher education, and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good. There is evidence that the Indiana University Bloomington Chapter of the American Association of University Professors was active on campus as early as 1916 and remains active to the present. The collection consists of group publications, minutes, notes, correspondence, and other related materials.

Thomas Ehrlich served as the 15th president of Indiana University, from 1987 to 1994. He graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School, serving in several legal and academic posts before his appointment as IU president. The collection consists of administrative files and correspondence related to the performance of duties as IU president.

Joseph Bradford began acquiring land in Martinsville, Indiana, in the mid-1800s. The Bradford Sand Mining Company was founded by Joseph's son, Perry Bradford, in 1877 in Morgan County, Indiana. The family business was passed on to Albert and John Bradford in the early 1900s. It remained in the family until 1938 when John Bradford deeded 900 acres of the Bradford property to Indiana University. This property is currently known as the Bradford Woods. The Bradford family papers span 1831-1941 and consist of various financial and business records related to their property, as well as documentation of family history and family correspondence. The correspondence primarily dates from 1898 and consists largely of letters written to the Bradfords by Eliza (Bradford) and husband Dr. Grant Monical from Camp George in Georgia and later Cuba where Grant was a Captain in the Spanish-American War.
