The University Women's Club was established at Indiana University on April 24, 1913, under the name of the Faculty Women's Club. The goal of the club was to hold social gatherings for members. In 1959 the group changed its name to the University Women's Club to avoid further confusion with the Women's Faculty Club. The collection consists of meeting minutes and reports, subject files and scrapbooks.

The University School was a K-12 laboratory school that was founded in 1938 by Indiana University and the School City of Bloomington (later Monroe County Community School Corporation). This collection contains volumes of the Jordannus, a yearbook produced by the middle and high schools, dating from 1939-1979.

The United World Federalists mss. IV, 1927-2011, consists of books, pamphlets, and research related to the United Nations, the environment, and generalized politics, as well as copies of World Federalist Association annual reports, the World Federalist News magazine, and miscellaneous related awards and conferences materials.

The Tynan, Kenneth mss., 1939-2001, consists of manuscript diaries of director and theater personality Kenneth Tynan (1927-1980).

The Clemens, S.L. mss., 1867-1944, consists of correspondence and other materials of Samuel L. Clemens, better known as the author Mark Twain.

The Turner mss., 1936-1949, consist of letters, 1936-1945, from Sir William Rothenstein, 1872-1945, artist; John Redwood Anderson, 1883-1964, poet; and Richard Church, 1893-1972, author, to Tom Turner, 1870-1949, employee of the Bradford Post Office, Bradford, Yorkshire, England, and book collector.

William V. S. Tubman (1895-1971), Liberia's longest serving President, served from 1944–1971. Tubman's presidency was marked by great changes in the economy, politics and social environment of Liberia. The materials in the collection include papers from the years of Tubman's presidency, his personal correspondence and memorabilia from Tubman's family.

The Trollope mss., 1830-1947, consist of notebooks and a rough draft by Frances (Milton) Trollope, 1780-1863, of Domestic Manners of the Americans; notes by Donald Arthur Smalley, professor, to Domestic Manners of the Americans; and poems and memoranda of Henry Trollope, 1811-1834.

The Trefusis mss., 1910-1950, consist largely of the letters of Violet Trefusis, English sociatlite and author, photos taken during the latter parts of her life in France, and other items related to her life.

The Treanor mss., 1878-1941, consist of letters and papers of Walter Emanuel Treanor, 1883-1941, Indiana University alumnus and judge.

E. Reginald Townsend (1917-1980) is best known as the man who built Liberia's Information Service. He served as Press Secretary and Chief of the Bureau (now the Department of Information, Culture and Tourism) to William V.S. Tubman, President of Liberia from 1944 to 1971, and as Minister of State for Presidential Affairs to William R. Tolbert, President of Liberia from 1971 to 1980. Townsend's wife, Evelyn Diggs Townsend (1932-2004), was involved in and led several church and women's organizations. After a coup brought down the Tolbert government and resulted in her husband's execution in 1980, she worked to attain peace in Liberia. The materials in this collection include papers from the years of Reginald Townsend's service during the Tubman and Tolbert presidencies and those from Evelyn Townsend's work in many service organizations, as well as personal correspondence and memorabilia from the Townsend family

William Tinsley was an architect from Dublin, Ireland; he is well-known in his profession for designing part of the original Indiana University Bloomington campus. This collection consists of a journal written by William Tinsley and two of his children, Charles and Harvey.

The Tichenor mss., 1929, consist of letters from journalist Ernest "Ernie" Taylor Pyle, 1900-1945, to Elizabeth Fisher Tichenor, 1901-1990.

The Tibbits, Mercedes mss., 1931-2008, consists of the publications from the collection of Dr. Mercedes Vidal Tibbits, a Catalan writer and editor from Barcelona, Spain.

The Thornburgh mss., 1938-1957, consist of various papers and speeches of broadcast executive, Donald W. Thornburgh.

Thompson, S. mss., 1911-1976, consists of the papers of Stith Thompson, 1885-1976, including correspondence; writings by Thompson; biographical and autobiographical materials such as travel files and diaries; materials relating to professional societies and conferences to which he belonged and attended; and family genealogies on which he worked over the years.

The Thompson, K.A. mss., 1874-1932, consist in the main of notebooks made by Kate A. Thompson, 1855?-1942, between 1918 and 1926, tracing her family's genealogy in relation to Nancy Hanks Lincoln, the mother of Abraham Lincoln.

The Thompson, H.Y. mss., 1917-1922, consist primarily of correspondence between Henry Yates Thompson, 1838-1928, book collector, and the executives of Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, friends, and advisers.

The Thompson, F. mss., 1895-1945, consist mainly of writings by Francis Thompson, 1859-1907, poet, and letters from Wilfrid Meynell, 1852-1948, author.

The Thielman mss., 1978-1995, consist of the catalogue of the fine bindings collection of James L. Thielman acquired by the Lilly Library in 1998.

The individuals represented in this collection are primarily members of the Theophilus A. Wylie family, immediate and extended. However, there are many hundreds of letters written to the family by friends far and wide. The bulk of the collection dates from 1850 through 1930, roughly the lifespan of Louisa Wylie Boisen, daughter of Theophilus A. and Rebecca D. Wylie, who was largely responsible for preserving the letters. The entire body of correspondence was part of the bequest to Wylie House Museum from Morton C. Bradley, Jr., great-grandson of Theophilus A. Wylie.

This collection consists of a cover design proof and two issues of the short-lived student humor magazine the Crimson Bull (1920). The magazine, which was published with financial support from the Indiana University chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, satirized aspects of university life through comedic sketches, cartoons, articles, and editorials contributed by IU students.

The Terre Haute Savings Bank mss., 1883-1922, consist of letters and papers of the Terre Haute, Indiana, bank of that name, which was incorporated on September 10, 1869.

Teaching Film Custodians, Inc. (TFC) began in the 1920s and merged with Indiana University in 1973. The mission of the company was to provide educational films to schools, colleges and universities and to promote the value of the motion picture. Collection consists of Members and Board of Trustees meeting minutes, and administrative files.

The Taymūr mss., ca. 1929–1953, consist of mostly short stories by Mahmūd Taymūr (1894–1973), one of the most influential Arabic writers of the 20th century.

The Taylor, F. mss., 1932-1984, consist of the correspondence, papers, business files and memorabilia of independent publisher, and film producer Frank Eugene Taylor, 1916-1999.

The Quinn mss., 1896-1930, contains the correspondence of dramatist John Millington Synge, 1871-1909; the final draft of his play, The Playboy of the Western World; and the writings of other authors, chiefly Amory Hare, 1885-1964.

The Swan mss., 1918-1949, consist of letters, photographs, and printed materials relating to William Swan's army service in World War I and later family papers and documents.

Collection consists of the papers of Marina Svetlova, a highly accomplished ballet dancer, choreographer, and Indiana University Professor. The collection contains a journal, performance programs, correspondence, news clippings, photographs, and scrapbooks.

The Sutherland mss., 1935-1950, are the notes of Edwin Hardin Sutherland, 1883-1950, professor of sociology at Indiana University, 1935-1950, for his "White collar crime," a Xerox copy of which is in the Lilly Library (Lilly HV6635 .S8 1961).

The Sulzer mss., 1917-1932, but principally 1927 and 1928, are papers of William Sulzer, 1863-1941, lawyer, member of the New York state legislature, U.S. congressman, and governor of New York.

The Sullivan, Mark X. mss., ca. 1930-1952, consist of 16mm. reels of film featuring actress Miriam Hopkins (1902-1972).

The Suares mss., 1916-1941, are the letters and writings of French poet, critic, and essayist André Suarès.

The Benns mss., 1914-1996, consists of the correspondence and papers of the F. Lee Benns family, and particularly of Kate Lee (Benns) Robinson Sturgeon, 1916-1997.

The Freeman mss., 1902-1961, consist of contracts and publishing correspondence relating to detective stories by R. Austin Freeman featuring his character Dr. Thorndyke, a specialist in "medical jurisprudence" or forensic science.

The Stone mss., 1888-1965, are the papers of Meta (Fuller) Stone. They consist of her writings, including an autobioraphical novel and poetry, and her correspondence with her friends and with her (ex-)husband Upton Beall Sinclair, 1908-1917, much of it concerned with her divorce.

The Stock mss., 1815-1963, consist of papers collected by theater collector Keith Lievesley Stock, b. 1911, former Under-Secretary, Ministry of Power.

Musician and conductor Frank St. Leger was a professor of music at Indiana University from 1953-1968. Prior to accepting the teaching position at IU, St. Leger held a number of noteworthy positions in the music and entertainment business, including a teaching position at the Royal Academy of Music in London, accompanist for top performers such as Austrialian soprano Nellie Melba, and musical advisor for the Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation. Collection focuses largely on St. Leger's music career prior to teaching at Indiana University and includes correspondence, notes and ideas for lectures and musical productions, recorded music lectures, and newspaper clippings. Prominent in the collection is St. Leger's correspondence with Spyros P. Skouras, president of Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation, regarding St. Leger's ideas for musical programs.

The Sterling mss., 1912-1925, consist of letters and poems of George Sterling, 1869-1926, poet.

Henry Thew Stephenson joined the faculty of the English Department at Indiana University in 1895 where he remained until his retirement in 1940. The Henry Thew Stephenson papers consist of the manuscript of Stephenson's unpublished "What Tree is That?"

The Starr, T. mss., 1904-1997, consist of the correspondence and papers of poet Carl Wilson, known as Tramp Starr.

The Starrett mss. II, 1920-1948, consist of three reels of negative microfilm containing letters and postcards from author Vincent Starrett to several other authors.

The Starrett mss., 1927-1959, consist of the correspondence of author and journalist Vincent Starrett, 1886-1974, known for his biography The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes and his detective stories.

The Starling mss., 1820-1927, are letters, illustrations, and writings by Hugh Clifford, Joseph Conrad, George Cruikshank, Charles Lever, and William Makepeace Thackeray, collected by Kenyon Law Starling, 1905-1983, businessman, of Dayton, Ohio.

The Starkey mss., 1891-1956, consist of letters and papers of James Sullivan Starkey, 1879-1958, (Seumas O'Sullivan, pseud.), as editor of the Dublin Magazine.

The Staritsky mss., ca. 1937-1982, consists of correspondence, documents, and art works, by and relating to artist Ania [Anna] Staritsky, 1907-1981.

Newton P. Stallknecht was a professor of Philosophy, Comparative Literature, and Criticism as well as Director of the School of Letters. Collection includes his personal correspondence, files on comparative literature, information concerning the organizations and societies to which he belonged, materials from his time at Princeton and later activities as an alumnus, as well as information on his publications.

Nicolas Spulber was a Distinguished Professor of Economics at Indiana University. Born in Romania in 1915, he immigrated to the United States in 1948 and began teaching at IU in 1954. His research interests focused primarily on the Soviet and post-Soviet economy and the functions of states in economic frameworks including centrally planned, developing, and market economies. Spulber continued researching and writing until his death in 2004. The collection consists of his research materials, reports, conference presentations, correspondence, and manuscripts and reviews of his published works.

The Spangenberg mss., 1918-1978, consists of the letters and papers of 1st Sergeant William A. Spangenberg, 1895-1978, a soldier from South Bend, IN, who served in World War I.

The Sonneborn mss., 1922-1981, consists of the papers of American biologist Tracy Morton Sonneborn, 1905-1981.

The Solt mss. II, 1912-2021, consists of the papers of concrete poet and scholar Mary Ellen Solt, 1920–2007.

Leo F. Solt, professor emeritus of History and dean of the University Graduate School, taught at the University of Iowa and the University of Massachusetts before joining the Indiana University faculty in 1955. In 1978 he was named dean of the University Graduate School, a position he held until 1987. The collection consists of biographical records, research notes, correspondence, and lecture notes.

The Solley mss., 1888-2006, consists of the automobile and coachbuilder catalogs, photographs, and related automobile literature of architect Thomas T. Solley, 1924–2006.

The Solidaridad International Antifascista mss., 1937-1941, consist of correspondence, receipts, membership lists, ephemera, and broadsides relating to the NY Headquarters of the SIA.

The Indiana University Chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the Society of Professional Journalists, was established in 1914. Its aim was to "promote interest in journalism and encourage high ideals in newspaper work." Over the decades, the group became known for their journalistic banquets and awards. The collection contains membership information, event files, general correspondence, newspaper articles, and other types of administrative files.

The History of the Written Word: Pages from the Past, 2400 BCE-1920 CE, consist of a collection of original leaves from rare books and manuscripts in limited portfolio sets.

The Smyth, J. mss., 1870-1935, consists of the invoices, receipts, and correspondence with booksellers of Judge James Davis Smyth, 1851-1940.

Production materials documenting Smithsonian's thirteen-part program on the role of radio in transforming the African American community in the twentieth century. The program was produced in 1996 by Jacquie Gales Webb for Smithsonian Productions, with assistance from the AAAMC. The collection contains over 400 hours of interviews and historical aircheck tapes in addition to articles, research files, program scripts, and transcripts. The audio interviews feature conversations with over 150 well-known disc jockeys, radio professionals, record company executives, journalists, and scholars. The historical airchecks include station identifications and jingles, radio interviews with prominent Black figures, coverage of historical events, and programs highlighting or influenced by the contributions of Black performers, disc jockeys, and other important persons in radio.

The Smith, L.P. mss., 1868-1946, consists primarily of the correspondence and writings of essayist Logan Pearsall Smith, 1865-1946.

Henry Lester Smith was a long-time professor and administrator at the Indiana University School of Education. In addition to teaching and other administrative positions, Smith served as the dean of the School of Education from 1916 until his retirement in 1946. Throughout his life and career, Smith served in a variety of other roles including as Superintendent of Schools in the Canal Zone, as an active member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, as chair of the local Red Cross chapter, as an active member of the National Education Association, and as Secretary-General of the World Federation of Education Associations. This collection consists largely of correspondence relative to his national and international educational work, materials developed in connection with his teaching, and research materials and writings in his main interest areas of international education, school administration, and character education.

The Smith, H.W. mss., 1817-1987, consists of the letters of reformer Hannah Whitall Smith, 1832-1911, her daughters, art historian Mary Berenson, 1864-1945, and relief organizer Alys Whitall Pearsall Russell, 1867-1951, and her granddaughters, suffragist Ray Strachey, 1887-1940, and psychologist Karin Stephen, 1889–1953.

The Smith, C. mss., 1929-1978, consists of of the papers of educator, consultant, musicologist, and journalist Carleton Smith, 1908-1984.

Indiana University alumnus John W. Sloan was born in 1915 in Oak Park, Illinois. He graduated with a B.S. in chemistry from IU in 1939, and completed two semesters of graduate study in chemistry from 1946-1947. He served in the United States Army from 1941-1945, where he reached the rank of Captain, later becoming a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve. This small collection includes chemistry and physics laboratory notebooks and coursework from Sloan's time as an undergraduate and graduate student. The collection also contains five photographs Sloan took of the IU campus when he was an undergraduate.

The Siurek mss., 1939-1946, consist of letters from Walter R. Siurek of the U.S. Coast Guard to his girlfriend Patricia Kurzyden in East Chicago, Indiana.

Denis Sinor was a faculty member of Indiana University in the Uralic and Altaic Program (now the Department of Central Eurasian Studies) from 1962 to 2011. Sinor founded the Department of Uralic and Altaic Studies in 1965 and the Asian Studies Research Institute for Inner Asian Studies (now the Sinor Research Institute for Inner Asian Studies [RIFIAS]), both of which he served as director for until his retirement from IU in 1986. He was active in many organizations during his tenure at Indiana University, most significantly the Journal of Asian History (JAH), Permanent International Altaistic Conference (PIAC), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and National Defense Education Act (NDEA). This collection consists of Sinor's correspondence with various organizations, IU, and personal contacts.

The Sinclair mss. IV, 1900-1963, consists of correspondence, writings, and monetary statements of author Upton Beall Sinclair, 1878-1968, and of his wife, Mary Craig (Kimbrough) Sinclair, 1883-1961.

The Sinclair, M.C.K. mss., 1884-1963, consists of the correspondence and writings of author Mary Craig Kimbrough Sinclair, 1883-1961.

The Sims mss., 1961-2000, consists of the correspondence, invoices, and catalogues of bookseller George Sims, 1923-1999.

Founded in 1886 as an honorary society for science and engineering, today Sigma Xi is an international research society that strives to promote the health of the scientific enterprise and honor scientific achievement. The Indiana University chapter of Sigma Xi was chartered in 1904. The collection consists of nomination forms, minutes, correspondence, by-laws, and constitutions. Also included is a report drawn up circa 1974 entitled "Indiana University chapter: the Society of Sigma Xi, 1904-1974."

The collection includes materials by and about Sieveking, plus memorabilia.

The Sieveking mss., 1724-1971, consists of the papers of Lancelot (Lance) de Giberne Sieveking, 1896-1974, author, playwright, and pioneer of BBC radio programming.

William Siegmann was the leading expert on the arts in Liberia and Sierra Leone. His collection contains an exhaustive lists of resources, both primary and secondary, pertaining to the arts, culture, language, and history of Liberia and Sierra Leone. Also included are materials from his various projects, espeically those from his "Aesthetics of Power: African Art Along the Windward Coast." Correspondence with various museums and universities, personal and teaching materials are also in this collection.

The Sherwood mss., 1917-1972, consists of the letters, diary, and newspaper clippings of Elmer William Sherwood, 1896-1979, author and insurance executive.

The Sherriff mss., 1931-1951, consists of letters from playwright Robert Cedric Sherriff, 1896-1975, to the League of Dramatists division of the Society of Authors.

The Sherriff mss. II, 1929-1957, consist of letters from playwright Robert Cedric Sherriff, 1896-1975, to writer Vernon Bartlett, 1894-1983.

Collection consists primarily of interview transcripts, program transcripts, and artist publicity materials used in the production of the Westwood One Radio programs Special Edition, That's Country Music, Rock Chronicles, My Top Ten, and History of Rock 'n Roll. It also contains materials from various specials including programs on Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, and the Rolling Stones.

The Shawe-Taylor mss., 1929-1995, consists of the papers of Desmond Christopher Shawe-Taylor, 1907-1995.

The Reynolds mss., 1912-1925, consist of positive photostats of letters, notes, and telegrams from George Bernard Shaw, 1856-1950, playwright, to Paul Revere Reynolds, 1864-1944, literary agent, who represented Shaw in the United States.

The Shanks mss., 1928-2006, consists of the papers of television executive Bob Shanks, 1932-2020, and photographer Ann Zane (Kushner) Shanks, 1922-2015.

Barbara Shalucha founded the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center in Bloomington, Ind. in 1948 and served as its director until 1986. Shalucha first came to Indiana University as an instructor in the Botany Department. She was hired for her special perspective on applied botany which incorporated youth involvement. The Barbara Shalucha papers comprise 7 cubic feet and span 1935-1992. The collection includes correspondence, speeches, publications, subject files, and teaching materials.

Robert H. Shaffer was affiliated with Indiana University for nearly 40 years. He served as Dean of Students from 1955 to 1969 before returning to faculty work full-time. This collection encompasses Robert and Marge Shaffer's personal collection of scrapbooks, with many of them containing newspaper clippings from his time as Dean and photographs from his travels across the world.

The Senour mss., 1919-1928, consists of letters from Professor of English Frank C. Senour, 1871-1928, to Indiana University alumna and benefactor Ruth Norman Halls, 1898-1990.
