Collections

This project contains interviews of members of Indiana county historical societies. The counties included are La Porte, Monroe, Noble, Jefferson, Wells, Randolph, Tippecanoe, Vigo, and Johnson. The interviewees discuss local history and the development of the historical society in their area. They describe society events, funding, exhibits, and publications. The members also describe their connections to their local history. They explain why they believe local history should be preserved and the role of the historical society.

This collection of interviews deals with the role of religion and ethnicity, specifically German-American, in Dubois County, Indiana. Subjects range from church celebrations and events to the use of nuns as teachers in the public schools. The use of the German language in the community is also widely covered, such as where it was used, who spoke it, and when it began to change primarily to English.

This collection of interviews looks at twentieth century life in Indiana. Topics are widely varied with emphasis based on the interviewers particular interest. Tthe labor movement, Flanner House Homes, and the DAR are discussed in the setting of larger events such as the Great Depression, World War II, and segregation.

The Nadel mss., 1995, consists of a typescript copy of Ira B. Nadel's biography of Leonard Cohen, Various Positions: A Life of Leonard Cohen, with annotations and commentary in the hands of Leonard Cohen and Kelley Lynch.

Extensions of the Tradition is an annual event featuring a concert of music by black composers with related exhibits and programs, co-sponsored by Indiana University's African American Arts Institute, the AAAMC, and the Jacobs School of Music. The event is documented through program booklets, flyers, photographs, and video and audio recordings.

The Wissing mss., 1994-2016, consist of the papers of Indiana University alumnus and Bloomington-based journalist Douglas Wissing. The collection includes his freelance articles as well as several book projects, including two books on US aid to Afghanistan.

Malcolm Richardson's records contain the planning documents and proceedings from the White House Conference on Philanthropy, as well as materials from the President's Council on the Arts and Humanities, the White House Millennium Council, and the 3rd annual Expanding Philanthropy through the Internet conference.

The I Association (formerly I-Men Association (1913-2006) and I-Women Association (1982-2006)) honors exceptional athletes at Indiana University Bloomington. This collection contains files about I Association alumni events and event planning, Board of Directors meeting information, I Association membership, and email, letter, and memo correspondence between I Association staff and alumni.

The Center for the Art of Translation mss., 1994-2010, consists of editorial files, proof copies, correspondence, and other material relating primarily to the Center's publication of Two Lines, an annual bilingual anthology of international literature featuring work from approximately twenty different languages.

Indiana Senior Corps Directors Association (ISCDA) was organized to unite all Senior Corps Directors into a state-wide organization. This association combines the three programs, Foster Grandparent Program (FGP), Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), and Senior Companion Program (SCP). The by-laws, New Director Handbook, RSVP Director's Manual for New RSVP Directors of Indiana, Words of Wisdom for RSVP Directors, two photographs of RSVP volunteer conference, and RSVP pins are included.

The Wolfson mss., ca. 1994-2002, consist of the papers of Laura E. Wolfson relating to her translations of works from Russian into English.

David G. Woods is a leading educator and researcher in the field of music who became the Dean of the Indiana University School of Music on July 1, 1997 and served until 1999. This collection consists of records created and collected during his time as Dean, and it includes the administrative files of his office including correspondence, records on master classes, and plans for the Distance Learning Program.

Myles Brand served as president of Indiana University 1994-2002. Collection consists of speeches given by Brand during his tenure as President of Indiana University.

The Strategic Directions Charter is an initiative enacted by Indiana University President Myles Brand in 1995 in response to acknowledged fundamental changes in the environment for higher education. The Charter's goal is to enact institutional changes and plans which will sustain the University's excellence, enabling it to emerge as a model for America's New Public University. A steering committee and topical task forces were created to guide Strategic Directions Charter initiatives and review proposed projects for funding. The collection includes administrative documents as well as files from funded and un-funded proposals submitted for rounds one, two, and three (1996-1998) of the Strategic Directions Charter initiative.

The Maycox mss., 1994-1998, consists of notes and autographs of contemporary American poets solicited by and sent to John G. Maycox, poet and businessman of Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Battle Over Citizen Kane mss., 1994-1996, consist of photographs of Orson Welles, William Randolph Hearst, and related topics collected for the production of the documentary film, The Battle Over Citizen Kane (1996). Photographs are reprints collected from archives and collectors for the film production.

This collection of interviews delves into several areas of Dubois County history between the two world wars. The most spoken of topics are religion, church events, and the use of German in various locales within the community. Also discussed are Prohibition and the notoriety of the county's moonshine industry, the Great Depression, and education in one-room schoolhouses.

In this project, retired professors from the Indiana University Department of History discusses their experiences in the profession. Topics discussed include educational and work history, the history department curriculum, development of the history department over time, prominent people in the department, publishing, teaching, and changes in the student body over time.

The collection consists primarily of audiocassette copies of the 26-part radio series Wade in the Water, produced by NPR in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, and concieved and hosted by Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon.

The Pyle mss. V, 1994, consist mostly of annotated excerpts from interviews by James Tobin with relatives and acquaintances of journalist Ernie Pyle, 1900-1945.

This collection is comprised of audio recordings and transcripts of oral history interviews conducted for the 50th and 60th anniversaries of the IU Kokomo campus, as well as interviews of Kokomo campus faculty, staff, and alumni conducted as part of the Indiana University Bicentennial Oral History Project.

The Bernofsky mss., 1993-2007, consists of correspondence, manuscripts, and proofs of translator Susan Bernofsky, 1966-.

Consists of papers, photos, and audiovisual materials generated and received by the office of Steve Buyer during his tenure as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Indiana's 5th district from 1993 to 2003 and Indiana's 4th district from 2003 to 2011.

The collection consists largely of clippings and printouts from clipping services relating to Evan Bayh's senatorial career, plus staff-compiled "Legacy Files," photos, and 364 videotapes, CDs, and DVDs. The "Legacy Files" and photos also include his gubernatorial years.

The Intersex Society of North America (ISNA) was founded in 1993 by Cheryl Chase, herself an intersexual who underwent female sex assignment and clitorectomy in early childhood. Her goal was to support and advocate for intersexuals by increasing awareness and acceptance of their various conditions and by discouraging medical professionals from surgically assigning gender to intersexed infants who are unable to consent to the procedure. In 2003 Cheryl retired from her position as director of the ISNA, passing the direction of the organization to Monica Casper, with Jane Goto acting as her assistant. In a posting on the bodieslikeours.org message boards in June 2003, Monica Casper described the goals of the ISNA very clearly: "Our mission is to end shame, secrecy and unwanted surgery for people with intersex conditions. We are a policy/advocacy organization working toward systemic social change… At the heart of ISNA's mission is fostering social acceptance of all bodies – be they intersex or not, trans or not, queer or not – and fostering informed consent for people to decide what happens to their bodies. Many people with intersex conditions have choice stripped from them when they are operated on as children, while many trans people have choice stripped from them when they are unable to obtain the surgical care they want and need." This collection contains a great deal of correspondence from people with intersex conditions looking for information and support, from urologists and sexologists, and from people affected by ISNA's many press releases who wish to express support. The collection also includes a huge number of academic articles on intersex issues as well as popular press articles intended to raise awareness about intersex issues. The Corman mss. VI, 1993–2003, consist mostly of letters from poet, translator and editor Cid Corman, 1924–2004, to German poet and carpenter Charlie Mehrhoff.

The Corman mss. V, 1993–2002, consists of letters from poet, translator, and editor Sidney "Cid" Corman, 1924–2004, to poet and translator Nicolas Linkert.

The Harshav mss., 1993-2001, consists of correspondence and drafts of volumes translated from Hebrew into English by translator Barbara Harshav, 1940-.

This collection includes press clippings, publicity materials, photographs, programs, CDs, and audio and video documenting Patrice Rushen's lectures and performance at Indiana University in April 1997.

The Michael McAlpin Collection consists primarily of print materials used in the production of the PBS television documentary Record Row: the Cradle of Rhythm and Blues. Included are production materials and interview transcripts created during Dr. Portia Maultsby's collaboration on the project as AAAMC director as well as VHS tapes of the rough cut, final broadcast version, and local coverage of the documentary.

The project, Dubois County: German Americans, deals with an area in Indiana rich with German Heritage. The interviewees discuss the history of the area, their lives and lifestyles, and the importance of religion, usually German Catholicism. They also discuss German dialects still spoken in and around the county, as well as how the language has influenced their English speaking.

Clippings, photographs, and audiocassette copies of airchecks compiled as "Sounds of the Fifties & Sixties" - radio programs as broadcast by well known WLAC deejay John R.

This oral history of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University traces creation of the Center from its earliest stages and its evolution into a fully operating academic institution dedicated to the study of philanthropy. It includes the negotiations in bringing the Fund Raising School to Indianapolis, Indiana, the grant proposals to the Lilly Endowment, finding the Center's first director, and the creation of its mission statement. This project also contains many different people's views on the study of philanthropy and the importance and success of the Center.

The project follows the Indiana Humanities Council from its beginnings in the 1960s until the present. The interviewees discuss their roles in the council, whether as a staff member or a board member. They discuss the founding of the council, the growth and changes it's undergone, the projects that it has funded, and those that it currently funds, according to their particular tenure. The interviewees also talk about the council's importance, positive work ethic, and good staff relations.

This project is comprised of 59 interviews with doctors who have practiced medicine in the state of Indiana from approximately the nineteen thirties until the nineteen seventies, eighties, and nineties. The doctors share personal anecdotes about their medical practices in both rural and urban areas, their perspectives on the many changes medicine has undergone in the twentieth century, and the greatest satisfaction they received from their profession. Many interviews include physicians' experiences during World War II, African-American physicians' experiences under segregation, and how each individual adjusted to a profession that became increasingly specialized over the years.

America's Promise - The Alliance for Youth was founded at the Presidents' Summit for America's Future in 1997. The Five Promises to children are at the core of America's Promise and are as follows: Caring Adults; Safe Places; a Healthy Start; Marketable Skills; and Opportunities to Serve.

The Boehm mss., 1992-2008, consists of translation drafts, page proofs, and correspondence relating to literary translations from German and Polish by noted American translator Philip Boehm, 1958-.

Indiana University Bloomington is the home of the National Center on Accessibility, a collaborative program of IU and the National Park Service. The nation's premiere resource promoting access for people with disabilities in recreation, the NCA is a program within the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and the Department of Recreation and Park Administration. Collection is comprised of reports, studies, brochures, materials used in a summer seminar, and copies of Access today, the Center's newsletter.

The Higgins, George V. mss, 1992-1999, consists of the correspondence between Higgins and Edward Gilligan, his close friend and long-term English professor at Western Michigan University, as well as various pieces of writings from short stories to nonfiction essays.

The Lyons, J. mss., 1992–1993, consists of letters to Jennifer Lyons, manager of The Jennifer Lyons Literary Agency in New York, from Swiss author Jürg Laederach, 1945-2018.

The interviews in this collection primarily discuss civil rights issues in Claiborne County, Mississippi. Some topics discussed are Black voter registration, school integration, and freedom of choice. The interviewees' childhoods, including the Great Depression and World War II, are also talked about in the interviews. The interviews were conducted as research for the Ph.D. dissertation Common Courtesy: The Civil Rights Movement in Claiborne County, Mississippi by the interviewer.

The Career in Librarianship project includes interviews with ten people employed in libraries or library education. Three of the interviewees were Deans of Indiana University's School of Library and Information Science, or SLIS. Others include a SLIS lecturer, a high school librarian, a college archivist, 2 public library directors, and a public library branch head. All of the interviewees worked in Indiana (except for one of the public library directors, who worked in Michigan). Collectively, the interviews consider the training that librarians receive, librarianship as a career, as well as changes in, and the future of, the profession. The interviews were conducted by students of the Indiana University School of Library and Information Science as a project for a class on the history of American libraries.

This project consists of interviews with war veterans. Interviewees discuss their war and military experiences. World War I through the Vietnam War are covered in this project. The interviews include discussions of military food, shelter, weapons, and travel.

The Weldon mss. II, 1992, consists of the manuscript, art work, and book production materials for A Question of Timing by British author Fay Weldon, 1931- .

A collection of Prince commemorative publications assembled by the AAAMC following the artist's death on April 21, 2016.

The Bridgett Davis Naked Acts collection focuses on Davis's activities as a filmmaker from 1994 through 2009. The collection comprises production materials, film elements, promotional materials, and press coverage related to the film and Davis's role in its creation.

David Reingold is the current Justin S. Morrill Dean of Liberal Arts and Professor of Sociology at Purdue University. This collection primarily focuses on his time working with the Corporation for National and Community Service as Director of Research and Policy Development where he was responsible for managing the agencies research and evaluation portfolio, providing consultation to the CEO on policy development, and working with the White House on the President's USA Freedom Corps initiative. This collection includes paper records as well as digital records.

Barbara Gomez's Learn and Serve America Collection contains publications about the Learn and Serve America and service learning from various institutions.

This project is a compilation of interviews of subjects with strong ties to and memories of Indiana University, primarily at the Bloomington campus, including former students, faculty, and staff, among others. The information spans most of the twentieth century and deals with the administrations under presidents Herman B Wells, John Ryan, Thomas Ehrlich, and Myles Brand. The project occurred in two parts. The first round of interviews was with administrators, trustees, and other high-ranking members of the university hierarchy. The second round of interviews was with senior faculty from a number of departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. The project is a survey of Indiana University's history as a whole including information about various academic departments, athletics, student organizations, campus growth, and the university's growth in the twentieth century. This project was funded by President Emeritus John Ryan.
