Thomas Nesbit Mathers was the son of Frank Curry Mathers, a distinguished Chemistry Professor at Indiana University, and Maud (Bowser) Mathers. Thomas attended Bloomington High School in the late 1920s-early 1930s before entering Indiana University where he graduated in 1936. Mathers went on to receive his law degree from Indiana University in 1939 and Master of Business Administration from Harvard University in 1941. He worked as an investment analyst throughout his career in the finance industry. The collection consists of Thomas Mathers' education related documents, notebooks, textbooks, and various coursework completed both at Bloomington High School, Indiana University, and at Harvard. This collection also contains a few journals kept by Mathers in 1931 as well as correspondence.

Correspondence with various museums and universities, personal and teaching materials are also in this collection.

The W.A. Whitten Collection, 1962-1991

Willie A. Whitten completed his Ed.D. from Indiana University in 1966. He made several trips to Liberia throughout the 1960s and 1970s as a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) worker in order to gather research for his dissertation. His research interests include education in Liberian villages with an emphasis on adult education and the conducting and planning of town meetings. This collection consists of newspaper and magazine articles from Liberia, government reports, and materials from the Voinjama School District, as well as 11 open reel tape recordings of town meetings and music from Liberian tribes. Also included are a collection of color transparencies showing images of tribal villages and culture, as well as a set of 86 artifacts containing items such as musical instruments, household tools, textiles, and decorative figurines.

Established in 1957, the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex was formed in response to the growing demand amongst American sex researchers for a national organization capable of uniting individuals professionally engaged in sex research. The SSSS has since grown to provide sex researchers from all over the world with a forum for discussing issues related to sex research including annual conferences, a newsletter, and the Journal of Sex Research. The Society for the Scientific Study of Sex (SSSS) Collection contains materials relevant to the incorporation of SSSS, its constitution, conference proceedings, meeting minutes, financial records, membership lists, and publications in addition to a large collection of conference-related audio/visual materials.

The collection of Robert Latou Dickinson (1861-1950), sex researcher and gynecologist, is comprised of 136 archival folders (2.5 linear ft.) of manuscripts and publication drafts, clinical case files and related sexually explicit materials, professional correspondence, a few medical drawings, and an incomplete draft biography of Dickinson written by his son-in-law, George Barbour. The collection also includes organizational records, minutes, and correspondence associated with The American Association of Marriage Counselors (1944), the Institute for Sex Research (1945-1949), The National Committee on Maternal Health (1931-1949) and the World League for Sex Reform (1926). The majority of the Dickinson collection consists of case studies, sexual histories, and gynecological/sexology subject files selected from the original 5200 files (1883-1923). The bulk of the original collection is held by the Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine, Harvard Medical School.

Wylie was the cousin of Indiana University's first president Andrew Wylie and spent most of his adult life at IU, beginning in 1836,serving as its librarian, professor, vice president, and at one point, its interim president. The individuals represented in this collection are primarily members of the Theophilus A. Wylie family, immediate and extended. However, there are many hundreds of letters written to the family by friends far and wide. The bulk of the collection dates from 1850 through 1930, roughly the lifespan of Louisa Wylie Boisen, daughter of Theophilus A. and Rebecca D. Wylie, who was largely responsible for preserving the letters. The entire body of correspondence was part of the bequest to Wylie House Museum from Morton C. Bradley, Jr., great-grandson of Theophilus A. Wylie.

Also included are several speeches, two copies of one of his publications and 2 personal items.

Theodore Bowie was a prominent faculty member at Indiana University, whose contributions to the field of the history of Asian Art made him a pivotal figure in the development of both the University's Art History Program and the University's Art Museum. This collection contains materials from both Bowie's professional and personal career. Professional documents from his time spent as professor and curator include lecture notes, travel itineraries, copies of scholarly publications, departmental memos and correspondence, loan agreements for exhibitions, and exhibition catalogues. A large number of exhibition materials pertain to "The Arts of Thailand", a traveling exhibition organized by Bowie that showcased previously unrecognized Thai art in the West. Accompanying these professional documents are Bowie's personal correspondence, drafts of his memoir, and a large number of photos and exhibition scrapbooks.

The Intersex Society of North America (ISNA) Collection, 1993-2010

The Intersex Society of North America (ISNA) was founded in 1993 by Cheryl Chase, herself an intersexual who underwent female sex assignment and clitorectomy in early childhood. Her goal was to support and advocate for intersexuals by increasing awareness and acceptance of their various conditions and by discouraging medical professionals from surgically assigning gender to intersexed infants who are unable to consent to the procedure. In 2003 Cheryl retired from her position as director of the ISNA, passing the direction of the organization to Monica Casper, with Jane Goto acting as her assistant. In a posting on the bodieslikeours.org message boards in June 2003, Monica Casper described the goals of the ISNA very clearly: "Our mission is to end shame, secrecy and unwanted surgery for people with intersex conditions. We are a policy/advocacy organization working toward systemic social change… At the heart of ISNA's mission is fostering social acceptance of all bodies – be they intersex or not, trans or not, queer or not – and fostering informed consent for people to decide what happens to their bodies. Many people with intersex conditions have choice stripped from them when they are operated on as children, while many trans people have choice stripped from them when they are unable to obtain the surgical care they want and need." This collection contains a great deal of correspondence from people with intersex conditions looking for information and support, from urologists and sexologists, and from people affected by ISNA's many press releases who wish to express support. The collection also includes a huge number of academic articles on intersex issues as well as popular press articles intended to raise awareness about intersex issues. The Gerald Currens Collection, 1918-2002

Gerald Currens' experience with Liberia began in 1951 as a Lutheran missionary. In 1968 he began his graduate studies in anthropology at the University of Oregon, which had a strong program focused on Liberia. In December 1971, Currens began his abroad research in Liberia for his PhD dissertation study on upland rice cultivation and other features of subsistence based economies in rural Liberia. His main area of study was Lawalazu which is a Loma speaking town several miles from Voinjama, the capital for Lofa County. The collection consists of his field notes, data, questionnaires, personal research documents, personal and nonpersonal published and unpublished papers, copies of "The Loma Weekly," and a great variety of small educational readers produced by the Loma Literacy Center.

The Fr. Christopher K. Kandakai Collection, 1928-2011

A student of Cuttington College, Fr. Christopher K. Kandakai became an ordained Epsicopal priest in 1951. He was Liberia's longest serving Episocpal priest and served as rector and priest-in-charge of many Episcopal churches in Liberia and trained many Episcopal theologians. Additionally, Kandakai was an avid linguist who translated the New Testament into both Gola and Vai languages. This collections contains materials pertaining to the Episcopal Church as well as to adult education and linguistics. A large selection of his materials are written in Vai, only one of two African languages with an original script, unrelated to Latin or Arabic.

The Black Student Voice was a newsletter published by the "Office of Afro-American Affairs" at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. This group was established by Black student activists in the spring of 1968 as a means of advocating for the creation of a formal university office to oversee the academic, social, and financial wellbeing of Black students, faculty, and staff, as well as an academic program in Black Studies. The collection contains four issues of The Black Student Voice newsletter, which the Office published weekly throughout the month of July 1968.

The Ballantonian records, 1967-1969

The Ballantonian was a weekly liberal arts review run by Indiana University students and sponsored by the Department of English. The journal ran from September 1967 to January 1969 and consisted of original writing and illustrations by students and members of the public. One issue of a spin-off publication, the Son of Ballantonian, was published in February 1969. This collection includes files related to the newspaper's founding as a IU student organization, as well as the production and circulation of the journal. Also present are published issues of the Ballantonian and Son of Ballantonian, the content of which includes reports on cultural events on campus; reviews of literature, film, and other works; political analysis; poetry, short fiction and non-fiction submissions; and photography and graphic art.

The A. Romeo Horton Collection, 1959-2007

A. Romeo Horton was best known in Liberia as a banker, the founder and former president of Liberia's first indigenous bank, the Bank of Liberia. Horton was also a dedicated public servant and was committed to economic cooperation in West Africa. In addition to his work in Liberia, Horton also had a successful career in Philadelphia as the president of the Phildelphia Corporation for Development and Cooperation and helped establish the United Bank of Philadelphia. This collection contains materials pertaining to his career as a banker, his involvement with numerous organizations, government materials, and his manuscripts and drafts.

Founded by graduate student Robert Emmett Tyrrell, Jr. (B.A. 1965, M.A. 1967), in 1967, The Alternative was founded as a conservative challenge to the political left of the era with an emphasis on free enterprise and democratic values. In the early 1970s, distribution moved nationally and in 1977 the publication was renamed The American Spectator. In 1985 the company moved from Bloomington, Indiana to Washington D.C. The collection consists of issues dating from 1967-1977.

Alice Withrow Field (1909-1960) was a sex researcher, criminologist and social scientist. This collection is comprised of papers, statistical and criminal reports, professional correspondence, research notes, manuscripts, charts, publication drafts, and legal information regarding criminal cases of sexual offenders and the relevant penal codes for New York City. The two foci of the collection are materials pertaining to the New York City Sex Offender study, and materials concerning cases in the Women's Court and Wayward Minors' Court.

Alex Comfort, Ph.D., (1920-2000) was a British biochemist, physician, sex researcher and author of numerous works including The Joy of Sex (1972), which sold over 12 million copies. This collection contains material on homosexuality, bondage, sexual health, etc. These items were used by Comfort for research for his book "Joy of Sex". There is also material related to the Sandstone experimental sexual community where Comfort lived for a short time.
