The Broom mss., 1940-1957, consists primarily of the correspondence of John Joseph Willard, "Bill," Broom, 1917-2000, and his parents, Ida J. Broom and John J.W. Broom, Sr., during Bill Broom's World War II military service. There are also a substantial number of letters, 1944-1945, from his future wife, Dolly May Gantz, as well as from other family members, hometown friends, and college acquaintances throughout the collection.

The Brown, A.W. mss. consists of family photos, correspondence, and original drawings, ca. 1915-1944, by artist and magazine illustrator Arthur William Brown.

The Brown, E.F., mss., 1936-1942, consist of the correspondence of Edward Fisher Brown, 1889-1973, businessman, concerning the acquisition of a number of early Peruvian documents and their description and inclusion in the Census of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts in the United States and Canada, by Seymour De Ricci and William Jerome Wilson.

The Brown mss., 1933-1955, are letters and papers of Paul Van Dyke Brown, 1899- , executive of the Indiana State Department of Conservation, the U.S. National Park Service, and the Washington State Department of Parks.

Bruner, Paul mss., ca. 1967-2011, consist of Paul Bruner's artist's book edition of the 1954 Holocaust era poem, "The Plains," written by Polish poet Tadeusz Rozewicz and translated by Paul Mayewski, as well as accompanying materials.

The Burgett mss., 1943-1946, consists of the correspondence of Lt. and military Lawyer Glenn A. Burgett.

The Burnham mss., 1848-1977, consist of the papers of Indiana University administrator, Walter Erastus Burnham, 1905-1980, and of his parents, grandparents and other family members.

Burton Dorr Myers came to Indiana University in 1903 as professor and head of the Department of Anatomy, and served as the School of Medicine Secretary from 1903-1920, Assistant Dean from 1920-1927, and Dean from 1927-1940. After retiring in 1940, he wrote the three volumes represented in this collection, his History of Indiana University v.2, History of Medical Education in Indiana, and Trustees and Officers of Indiana University 1820-1950. This collection consists of drafts, correspondence, research materials, notes and other publications from the years 1906-1956.

The Burton mss., 1940-1967 and 1976, are the papers of Lindley James Burton, 1921-1968, professor of Mathematics at Lake Forest College, Illinois, concerning various phases of the work of the United World Federalists movement in Illinois.

The Busch mss., 1895-1952, are the manuscript scores and papers of Fritz Busch, 1890-1951, German conductor and composer.

The Calas mss., 1939-1945 and 1967, consist of letters from William Carlos Williams, 1883-1963, poet, to Nicolas Calas, 1907-1989, art critic and educator. The material deals primarily with Williams' appraisal of Calas' critical writing and its effect on Williams' own work.

Consists primarily of the papers of the British publishing firm of Calder & Boyars Ltd. Also included are the papers of its predecessor John Calder (Publishers) and the personal papers of John Calder, 1927- . A few personal papers of Marion Boyars, 1928-1999, are also present.

The Canary mss., 1929-1965, consist of farm records and accounts of Paul W. Canary, 1903-1995, of Johnson County, Indiana.

The Cane mss., 1936-1957, consist of letters from Upton Sinclair, 1878-1968, author, to Melville Henry Cane, 1879-, lawyer and poet. They relate in the main to Sinclair's writings.

The Careskey mss., 1925-1971, consist of the childhood ephemera and school materials of Helga Careskey, 1925-.

The Carmichael mss., 1921-1955, consist of the papers of Hoagland Howard (Hoagy) Carmichael, 1899-1981, composer, radio artist, recording artist, writer and actor for Broadway shows and motion pictures.

The Carroll L. Lurding Library of College Fraternity and Sorority Materials mss., ca 1840-2014, consist of books, pamphlets, histories, yearbooks, and other bound volumes detailing the history of fraternities, sororities, colleges, and universities from all 50 states and the District of Columbia in the United States as well as some colleges in Canada.

The Cauger, Richard E. mss., ca. 1923-1997, consists of the research notes and note cards, slides, documents, articles, books, correspondence and the long draft typescript manuscript (missing pages 495-518) of a planned biography of Mary Donovan Hapgood written by Cauger. Also included are copies of Mary Hapgood materials held by the Lilly Library.

This collection consists of the family papers of Indiana University professor Cecilia Hennel Hendricks spanning the period from 1839 through 1970. Included are papers relating to the academic careers of Cecilia, Associate Professor of English, and her sister Cora, Professor of Mathematics at Indiana University, as well as manuscripts and writings by both women. Also found in the collection are papers and correspondence of family members: father Joseph B. Hennel, mother Anna M. Thuman Hennel, Cecilia's husband John Hendricks, and sister Edith Hennel Ellis.

The Chamberlin mss., 1861-1865, consists of the correspondence of Union soldier Joseph L. Chamberlin addressed to family back home in Indiana.

Charles B. Heiser was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Botany at Indiana University and considered to be an authority on capsicum, tortora and gourds. The collection consists of his research and correspondence.

Indiana's first state forester; Deam was a taxonomic botanist known for his work on trees, plants, shrubs, and flowers of Indiana. Collection consists of diaries, correspondence, copies of published books, library records, financial records, notations on specimens, records of sale of Deam's library and herbarium to Indiana University, articles about him, information about his family, and a paper by Deam on the pharmacy business. Includes correspondence from Charles A. Weatherby, curator of Gray Herbarium at Harvard University.

Charles Deiss was the chair of the Department of Geological Sciences and the Indiana State Geologist. Deiss is well-known for his work on Cambrian faunas and stratigraphy from western North America.

Charles R. Forker was a professor of English at Indiana University from 1959 to 1992. He was a known Shakespeare scholar and teacher. Collection consists of Forker's correspondence, research, teaching files, and publications.

Charles Hyneman was a Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Indiana University. Collection contains biographical materials, copies of articles, manuscripts, research notes, lectures, teaching materials, papers and reports relating to his work for the federal government during World War II, and general correspondence. Includes manuscript copies of American founding experience (published in 1994), Government and politics in the United States (not published), and some chapters of an unfinished book to have been co-authored by Hubert H. Humphrey on the American political system. Correspondents include Hubert H. Humphrey, Sander Vanocur, and Herman B Wells.

Charlotte A. Lowe, born September 7, 1867, in Indianapolis, Indiana, was the wife of William Lowe Bryan. The collection consists of personal papers, correspondence, and writings of Charlotte Lowe Bryan in four series: American Association of University Women, 1932-1933, consisting of loan fund reports for the Bloomington chapter; Addresses and presentations, 1929-1937, containing copies of speeches given both by and for Bryan; Correspondence, 1873-1937, containing correspondence both to and from Bryan; and Publications, 1933-1937, consisting of typescripts and galley sheets of articles written by Bryan.

Chase C. Mooney was a professor of history at Indiana University. After receiving his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1939, Chase Curran Mooney began his teaching career at Brenau College in 1939. In 1946 he joined the history faculty at Indiana University, where he remained until his death in 1973. As a distinguished member of the faculty, Mooney participated in numerous history department committees and successfully worked to bring the Journal of American History to IU in 1963. With research interests focusing upon African Americans, the U.S. Civil War, and the history of the American South, he produced numerous book reviews, articles, and two major monographs, Slavery in Tennessee in 1957 and William H. Crawford, 1772-1834 which was released posthumously in 1974. Mooney's papers contain student files, correspondence, research and manuscripts relating to his publications, including Slavery in Tennessee and William H. Crawford, teaching files, files relating to committees at Indiana University, and subject files all relating primarily to his work as a professor and to his research interests.

The Cladel mss., 1869-1969, consists of the literary papers and correspondence of French writer Judith Jeanne Cladel, 1873-1958.

Clarence Flaten (1910-1974) was Supervisor of Photography at the Indiana University Audio-Visual Center from 1949-1974 and a faculty member in the IU School of Education from 1958-1974. This collection documents Clarence Flaten's family life, professional career at Indiana University, and military service during World War II through photographs, film, correspondence, course materials, publications, military personnel files, and other materials.

The Clarke, T.E.B. mss., 1934-1988, consists of the papers of British author and screenwriter Thomas Ernest Bennett Clarke, 1907-1989.

The Clark mss., 1909-1957, consists of the letters and writings of author, editor, and publisher Thomas Curtis Clark, 1877-1953, as well as the autographs and poems of other writers collected by him.

The Claxon mss. II, 1937-2004, consists of the personal papers of Baptist missionaries William Neville and Emma (Osborne) Claxon.

The Cleland mss., 1911-1946, consists of the papers of botanist Ralph Erskine Cleland, 1892-1971. They consist chiefly of correspondence with prominent scientists on Oenothera, evening primrose.

The Clemens mss., 1929-1956, consists of letters written to author Cyril Clemen, 1902-1999, cousin of Samuel Langhorne Clemens.

The Clemens, S.L. mss., 1867-1944, consists of correspondence and other materials of Samuel L. Clemens, better known as the author Mark Twain.

The Cleverdon mss. II, 1926-1988, consists of the papers of bookseller, publisher, and BBC producer and director, Douglas Cleverdon, 1903-1987.

The Cockerell mss., 1920-1957, consist of the correspondence of Sydney C. Cockerell, librarian to William Morris, as well as printed material and ephemera related to the J. Piermont Morgan Library.

The Collins mss., ca. 1926-2001, consists of the correspondence, writings, photographs, albums and chess club records of influential American chess teacher John William (Jack) Collins, 1912-2001.

The Columbia Conserve Co. mss., 1903-1953, consists of the papers of the Columbia Conserve Company, a cannery in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Comic Art mss., 1906-1967, consists of original illustrations for comic books, newspaper comic sections, pulp magazines, and film animations.

A collection of cookbooks printed in the United States between 1907 and 2008, with particular focus on cookbooks from Indiana.

The Conrad mss., 1886-1983, consists of the papers of novelist Joseph Conrad, 1857-1924.

The Cook, H. mss. consists of diaries, 1943-1958, of Helen York Cook of Mooresville, Indiana.

The Cooper mss. II, ca. 1905-1985, consists of the papers of newspaperman Kent Cooper, 1880-1965, and of his wife, Sarah A. Gibbs Cooper, mostly dating from after Kent Cooper's death. Most of the collection concerns his work as a journalist, but some of it relates to his work as a composer.

The Cooper mss. III, circa 1927-1980, consists of letters, photographs, and memorabilia such as plaques and resolutions, of and relating to journalist and Associated Press Director Kent Cooper, 1880-1965.

The Corbacho mss., 1912-1951, consists of correspondence and documents written by, sent to, and concerning historian and Peruvian diplomat,Jorge María Corbacho, 1881-1947, and his collection of Latin American manuscripts.

The Corbacho/Pezet mss., circa 1853-1946, consists of manuscripts, correspondence, photos and related ephemeral material covering a variety of topics, with a significant emphasis on U.S.-Peruvian relations from 1853-1929, as well as important diplomatic letters relative to the War of the Pacific (1879-1884).

The Cordell mss., 1909-1963, consists of letters to university professor Richard Albert Cordell, 1896-1986, from prominent literary figures.

The Corle mss., 1942-1965, consists of letters between author Edwin Corle, 1906-1965, and his publishers, series editors, and magazine editors in addition to writings including Corle's stories, essays, novels, non-fiction books, and extensive holograph and typescript drafts of a multi-volume novel, The Californians, left uncompleted upon his death.

The Corman mss. III, 1943-2004, consists of the papers of poet, translator and editor Cid Corman, 1924-2004.

The Indiana University Cosmopolitan Club was founded in 1916 and received its charter from the Corda Fratres Association of Cosmopolitan Clubs in 1918. The Club was dedicated to fostering understanding and fraternity between foreign and American students in order to promote international cooperation and peace. The collection consists of correspondence, programs, financial records, membership lists, and newspaper clippings. Also included are publications, including issues of the Club newsletter, the Cosmo reporter.

The John W. Cravens family were Indiana University alumni and employees. John William Cravens arrived in Bloomington in 1885 to attend Indiana University, where he earned his AB in History in 1897 and AM in Journalism in 1920. While pursuing his undergraduate degree, Cravens was appointed University Registrar, a position he held until his retirement in 1936, in addition to University Secretary, 1915-1936 and Secretary of the Board of Trustees, 1898-1936. His second wife, Mellie Parker Greene, also attended Indiana University. Upon her arrival in Bloomington in 1906, Mellie secured a job in the University Library but the following year found a position as secretary to President William Lowe Bryan. She remained an administrative employee of Indiana University until 1954. Ruth Ralston Cravens, daughter of John Cravens from his first marriage, graduated from Indiana University in 1920. She served as an administrative assistant to IU President Herman B Wells from 1942-1956. This collection consists of the papers of the John W. Cravens family, including John's speeches, research and draft articles on the history of Indiana University, the IU trustees, and his Educational publicity article. Ruth's papers consist entirely of correspondence, but the material from Mellie includes speeches and biographical material.

The Crawford, H. mss., 1895-1978, consists primarily of the papers and memorabilia of businessman Hanford Crawford, 1854-1930, of St. Louis, Missouri.

Includes various uncataloged scholarly articles and periodicals from the library of C. R. Boxer.

The Creative Writing Annual was an annual compilation of essays, short stories, poems, and illustrations produced by freshman composition students in the Indiana University Department of English. This collection includes volumes created from 1931 to 1947. Professor John Robert Moore began the magazine as a final project for students in his English 105: Advanced Composition for Freshmen course in 1931.

The Cummins mss., 1888-1980 (Bulk 1930-1970), consists of the correspondence, personal papers, blueprints and drawings of Clessie Lyle Cummins, 1888-1968, automotive diesel engine developer and founder of Cummins Engine Company of Columbus, Indiana.

The Curle mss., 1901-1966, consists primarily of letters sent to author Richard Curle, 1883-1968, and most often relate to Joseph Conrad.

The Curle mss. III, 1904-1967, consists primarily of letters to author Richard Curle, 1883-1968, from Lady Margaret Alice Lili (de Windt) Brooke, Ranee of Sarawak, 1849-1936; bibliographer Nigel Maxwell; and journalist John Mackinnon Robertson, 1856-1933.

The Curle mss. IV, 1901-1968, consists of the papers of author, traveler and bibliophile Richard Curle, 1883-1968.

The Curry mss., 1919-1945, primarily consists of the letters of socialist leader Eugene Victor Debs, 1855-1926 to his secretary Mabel (Dunlap) Curry, 1868-1947.

The Cycling mss., ca. 1879-1978, consists of materials pertaining to the growth of bicycling and the bicycling industry in the late-19th and early-20th century.

The Czech mss., ca. 1900-2010, consists of individual items by Czech writers, artists, etc., written in the Czech language and acquired from a variety of sources.

Daniel J. Crowley was a folklorist with research and ethnographic interests in African and African diaspora communities. This collection consists of collected folktales Crowley had planned to use to create a tale-type index.

The Dauner mss., 1918-1993, consists primarily of letters from colleagues and friends to Margaret Louise Dauner, 1907-2005, professor emeritus of English at Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis.

The Dauner mss. II, 1921-1972, consists of materials by and relating to American poet Edwin Arlington Robinson, 1869-1935.

The Davenport mss., 1940-1944, consist of scrapbooks, photo albums, and memorabilia relating to the presidential campaign of Wendell Willkie collected by Russell Davenport, advisor/campaign manager.

David Bidney was hired at Indiana University as an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology in September of 1950 where he remained until his retirement on 1 July 1974. The David Bidney papers comprise 6.4 cubic feet and span 1930-1974 and includes correspondence, course materials, and information on his professional organizations, writing, and research.

David G. Frey was a professor of zoology at Indiana University who specialized in limnology (aquatic ecology) and Cladocera (water flea). The collection consists of Frey's personal correspondence, reprints of most of his publications, as well as extensive research files encompassing his years as a limnologist.

David Kaser was a professor in the School of Library and Information Science from 1973 to his retirement in 1991. This collection consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence, including letters to family and professional colleagues; date books listing Kaser's appointments, classes, and meetings; publications including copies of his books, journal articles, and reports, primarily dealing with the history of the development of American libraries, academic library administration, and the design and construction of library buildings; biographical and personal information which includes his resume, a list of his publications, and information on his consulting activities; and teaching records which includes VHS recordings of two courses which Kaser taught.

A collection of 13 photos copied from the personal collection of David "Panama" Francis for use by Portia K. Maultsby and the Smithsonian Institution for the 1986 symposium and accompanying booklet and exhibition, Rhythm and Blues, 1945-1955. Francis participated as a panelist. The original photographs may now be in the possession of the Smithsonian Institution.

The Dawson mss., 1917-1966, consists primarily of letters from author Emily Hahn, 1905-1997, to her sister, Rose, and brother-in-law, Mitchell Dawson; clippings about Hahn; and photographs.

The Day, Don mss., 1932-1983, bulk 1940s-1950s, consist of science fiction and fantasy fan zines, many of them distributed through amateur press associations (APAs), that were collected by Portland, Oregon-based fan Don Day.

The Dean of Women's Office at Indiana University was created in 1901 and existed until 1946. Duties of the office covered all aspects of coed's lives, from the classroom to a social environment. The collection consists of administrative files created by the Dean of Women's office from 1917-1945.

Della J. Evans was an Indiana University alumna who graduated in 1897. She was a writer and sometimes wrote under the pseudonym Julian Allen. Collection consists of sketches, correspondence, journals, essays, plays, short stories, and poetry.

Delmas E. Aldridge was a member of the Indiana University wrestling team from 1929-1932. He collected newspaper articles, photographs, and correspondence related to the team and compiled the materials into a scrapbook.

Denis Sinor was a faculty member of Indiana University in the Uralic and Altaic Program (now the Department of Central Eurasian Studies) from 1962 to 2011. Sinor founded the Department of Uralic and Altaic Studies in 1965 and the Asian Studies Research Institute for Inner Asian Studies (now the Sinor Research Institute for Inner Asian Studies [RIFIAS]), both of which he served as director for until his retirement from IU in 1986. He was active in many organizations during his tenure at Indiana University, most significantly the Journal of Asian History (JAH), Permanent International Altaistic Conference (PIAC), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and National Defense Education Act (NDEA). This collection consists of Sinor's correspondence with various organizations, IU, and personal contacts.

The Denson mss., 1890-1967, consists of the papers of editor Alan Denson, 1930- , most of which were assembled for the book Letters From AE.

The Depréaux mss., circa 1940–2004, consists primarily of a diary written by Marie Louise (Brent) Depréaux in Paris during the German occupation.

The Derwood mss., 1937-1956, consists of the correspondence, writings, and drawings of Gene Derwood, 1909- 1954, poet and painter.

The DeVincent mss., ca. 1922-1997, consists primarily of correspondence, notes, photographs, etc., of musician and radio entertainer Sam DeVincent, 1918-1997.

The DeWitt mss., 1941-1955, consists of letters from Upton Sinclair, 1878-1968, author, to Samuel Aaron DeWitt, 1891-1963, poet and businessman, and correspondence between Mary Craig (Kimbrough) Sinclair, (Mrs. Upton Sinclair), 1883-1961, and DeWitt.

The Diamant, Alfred mss., 1917-2012, consists of the personal correspondence, emails, school records, military papers, birth and marriage certificates, and family trees of Alfred Diamant. It also includes various drafts and pre-publication copies of his and his wife's co-authored memoir Worlds Apart, Worlds United: A European-American Story.

The Dickinson mss., 1941-1965, consists of the writings of poet and translator Patric Dickinson, 1914-1994.

The Dobell mss., 1849-1947, consists of personal letters written by Sydney Thompson Dobell, 1824-1874, poet, to friends, and a few by friends about Dobell.

The Dodd, Mead mss., 1855-1992, consists of the author/translator agreements, correspondence, and copyright statements of publisher Dodd, Mead & Company.

The Domherr mss., 1937-1975, consists of the papers of Russian editor and translator Ludwig Leopoldovich Domherr, 1894-1984.

The Dorson mss., 1925-1981, consists of the papers of folklorist Richard Mercer Dorson, 1916-1981.

The Dos Passos mss., 1903-1950, consists of letters and college writings of author John Dos Passos, 1896-1970, and legal files and correspondence of his family in connection with the estate of his father John Randolph Dos Passos, 1844-1917.

The Doyle mss., 1942-1947, consists of the correspondence and bibliographical notes of David Anton Randall, 1905-1975, relating to his "Bibliographical notes" on the Sherlock Holmes books of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, 1859-1930 (The Baker street journal, I: 103-106, 232-237, 371-377, 504-508, January-October 1946; II: 104-105, 491-196, January and October, 1947).

The Dreiser mss. V, 1871-1945, consists of correspondence and photographs pertaining to author Theodore Dreiser, 1871-1945.

Dr. Gregory A. Waller (born 1950) is a film historian, author, and current Provost Professor in Cinema and Media Studies at Indiana University Bloomington. His research focuses on non-theatrical cinema, small gauge film, and film venues. The collection consists of catalogs and other ephemera related to small gauge film distribution, exhibition, and equipment with strong representation of educational films, government films, religious films, and films for home viewing. Some materials also include feature films and film strips. The collection spans nearly 80 years of film history and includes more than 450 items. The bulk of material originates from the World War II era and the subsequent 3 decades, when 16mm film was a popular and commonly used format for entertainment and information sharing. In addition to catalogs, the collection also includes advertisements, exhibition programs, and trade papers collected by Waller to aid in his research.

The Dubin mss., 1923-1953, consists of manuscript, mimeographed, and printed materials collected by Martin Dubin in connection with the preparation of his Ph.D. dissertation in the Department of Government, Indiana University.

The Dunkin mss., 1942-1977, consists of the papers of librarian and library science professor Paul Shaner Dunkin, 1905-1975.

A prominent family in the Bloomington community, Indiana University purchased land from the Dunn family in order to relocate the university to its current site after the devastating fire of 1883 at the Seminary Square location. Family members represented in this collection include George Grundy Dunn Sr., Moses Fell Dunn, and William McKee Dunn. The collection includes correspondence, writings, deeds and other real estate documents, insurance contracts, miscellaneous receipts, cemetery drawings and plot plans for Dunn Cemetery, located on the I.U. Bloomington campus, and family photos.
