Theophilus A. Wylie was the cousin of Indiana University's first president Andrew Wylie and spent most of his adult life at IU, beginning in 1836,serving as its librarian, professor, vice president, and at one point, its interim president. Collection consists of Wylie's correspondence, diaries, sermons, drawings, and writings.

The Wylie family represented in this collection are all family members or descendents of Indiana University's first president, Andrew Wylie. Many of the earliest family members were closely associated with the university themselves. The collection includes correspondence, financial records, newspaper clippings, obituaries, academic records, journals, scrapbooks, drawings, and poetry. In addition to family affairs, the collection includes information about Indiana University and Bloomington, Indiana, including land deeds and a 19th century account book from Bloomington's McCalla store.

The Wylie family members represented in this collection are all family or in-laws of Andrew Wylie, Jr., eldest son of Indiana University's first president, Andrew Wylie. The collection consists of correspondence written by Andrew Wylie Jr., his father, his wife, his siblings, aunts and uncles. Also included are letters written by Wylie's father-in-law, Daniel Bryan, other members of the Bryan family, and a few from other individuals.

The families represented in this collection are all family members or descendants of Theophilus Adam Wylie of Indiana University. Many of the earliest family members were closely associated with the university themselves. The collection includes legal documents, essays and biographical writings, financial records, business records, newspaper clippings, wedding invitations, academic records, journals, programs and drawings. The collection has been collated together from ephemera discovered amongst correspondence, books from the Theophilus Adam Wylie Library and papers held by Morton Bradley Jr.

Andrew Wylie assumed the position as the first president of Indiana College in 1829, and he died on 11 November 1851 of pneumonia which he developed after accidentally cutting his leg while chopping wood. This collection consists of Andrew Wylie's personal papers, and includes records documenting Wylie's tenure at Jefferson and Washington Colleges; correspondence with family and professional colleagues; Wylie's sermons, lectures, and writings; bills, contracts, and receipts relating primarily to building and maintaining the family residence; and biographical information on Wylie.

The Wordsworth mss. II, 1848-1909, consist of letters and papers of the family of William Wordsworth, 1770-1850, and their friends. They are concerned chiefly with family matters, financial accounts, and the welfare of Dora Wordsworth, 1858-1934, his granddaughter, after the death of her mother.

The Wordsworth mss., 1805-1948 consist of primarily correspondence from William Wordsworth, 1770-1850, to family members, friends, and colleagues.

The Wordsworth mss. III, 1806-1956, consist of correspondence of William Wordsworth, 1770-1850, and of Mrs. Dorothy (Wordsworth) Dickson; a photograph of a chalk drawing of Wordsworth; and a photograph of Mrs. Dickson.

The Woodward, S.C. mss., 1767-1961, consist of correspondence, autographs and pictures of actors, actresses, managers, dramatists, musicians, and other persons connected with the theatre from the collection of Sidney C. Woodward, journalist.

The Woodward mss., 1844-1905, consist of the correspondence of John Trotter Woodward, 1819-1877, physician of Buena Vista, Monroe County, Indiana, with his family and friends, accompanied by related family materials.

The Woodburn family first settled in Bloomington, Indiana, in 1830, having relocated from Chester County, South Carolina. This collection consists of personal correspondence and other material of family members of James Albert Woodburn (1856-1943), a professor of history at Indiana University (1890-1924), including his father James Woodburn, wife Caroline Gelston Woodburn, brothers Walter E. and Theophilus Wylie Woodburn, son James Gelston Woodburn, and granddaughter Janet Wiecking. Collection materials date from 1848-1978 and notably include Caroline Gelston Woodburn's letters describing her experiences as a new member of the Bloomington and Indiana University communities in the early 1890s, and a photocopy of James Gelston Woodburn's diary ("My Trip Abroad"), which documents his trip to Europe in 1911-1912.

The Boerner mss., 1779-1828, consist of manuscripts, journals, and correspondence by and relating to German writers Caroline von Wolzogen, Oskar Seidlin, and Friedrich von Schiller, along with related research material from German literary scholar and Goethe researcher Peter Boerner.

The Williams, W. mss., 1788-1857, consist of the letters and The Journal of Penrose, Seaman by William Williams, 1727-1791, painter and novelist.

The Williams, Samuel mss., 1796-1919, consist of letters and papers of Samuel Williams, 1786-1859, and his son, Samuel Wesley Williams, 1827-1928.

Williams taught mathematics at Indiana University for nearly 50 years however, he was best known for his multi-volume work, Lincoln Finds a General, 1949. Williams was also the first commander of the Student Army Training Corps, later to be known as The Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) at Indiana University.

The Williams, Jonathan mss., 1738-1869, consist of letters and papers of Jonathan Williams, 1750-1815, merchant and soldier, grand-nephew of Benjamin Franklin and first superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

The Whitehouse, F. mss, 1848-1938, consist of architectural renderings, photographs, scratch board sketches, and pen & ink sketches of works produced by noted Chicago architect, Francis M. Whitehouse.

The Wharton mss., 1836-1975 (bulk 1900-1937), consists of the correspondence, diaries, and writings of novelist Edith Newbold Jones Wharton, 1862-1937.

The Wensinger, Arthur S. mss., 1798-2007, consists of the papers of translator and academic Arthur S. Wensinger, 1926- .

The Wells mss., 1831-1938, consists of correspondence from prominent statesmen and authors, some of which is addressed to Shakespearean commentator William Wells.

Before becoming president of Indiana University, Herman B Wells served as an assistant cashier at the National Bank of Lebanon before going on to work for the Indiana Bankers Association, the Indiana Commission for Financial Institutions, and the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions. He was named dean of the Indiana University School of Business administration in 1935 by IU President William Lowe Bryan. In 1937 he was named acting president of the university and president the following year, a position he held until 1962. Upon his retirement, IU created the position of University Chancellor, which Dr. Wells held until his death in 2000. This collection consists of Wells' personal papers and includes papers pertaining to his family and personal finances, his activities in the banking profession, his work in Germany for the United States government after World War II, and to his research and teaching and professional activities as a member of the faculty of Indiana University.

The United Presbyterian Church mss., 1833-1933, consists of the records of the United Presbyterian Church of Bloomington, Indiana, and its predecessors, the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, the Associate Presbyterian Church and the Reformed Presbyterian Congregation.

The Tuttle mss., 1838-1912, are papers of Elizabeth A. Tuttle, 1823?-1896, nurse and teacher of Colebrook, Ohio, and of Ira Norris Noland, 1844?- , physician, who married Hattie Tuttle, niece of Elizabeth A. Tuttle.

The Trollope mss., 1830-1947, consist of notebooks and a rough draft by Frances (Milton) Trollope, 1780-1863, of Domestic Manners of the Americans; notes by Donald Arthur Smalley, professor, to Domestic Manners of the Americans; and poems and memoranda of Henry Trollope, 1811-1834.

The Tresler mss., 1833-1873, consist of family letters, promissory notes, receipts, deeds, etc., 1833-1862, of Jacob Tresler of Monroe County, Indiana.

William Tinsley was an architect from Dublin, Ireland; he is well-known in his profession for designing part of the original Indiana University Bloomington campus. This collection consists of a journal written by William Tinsley and two of his children, Charles and Harvey.

The Thomson mss., 1813-1881, consist of papers of Elizabeth Anna (Williams) Thomson, 1824-1854; her husband, Samuel Steele Thomson, professor of Latin at Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana; and her son-in-law, Theodore H. Ristine, lawyer.

The Thompson mss., 1837-1899, are letters and papers of Richard Wigginton Thompson, 1809-1900, lawyer, judge, Indiana state legislator, U.S. congressman, U.S. secretary of navy.

The Thiébault Family mss., 1733-1872, consist of the papers of mutiple generations of the Thiébault family. The collection contains correspondence, journals, sketches, legal documents, poems, songs, drafts, military papers, autographs, and other miscellaneous objects belonging to the family.

The individuals represented in this collection are primarily members of the Theophilus A. Wylie family, immediate and extended. However, there are many hundreds of letters written to the family by friends far and wide. The bulk of the collection dates from 1850 through 1930, roughly the lifespan of Louisa Wylie Boisen, daughter of Theophilus A. and Rebecca D. Wylie, who was largely responsible for preserving the letters. The entire body of correspondence was part of the bequest to Wylie House Museum from Morton C. Bradley, Jr., great-grandson of Theophilus A. Wylie.

The Stevens mss. II, 1805-1911, consist of the correspondence of teacher and editor John Stevens, 1798-1877, and of members of his family.

The Starr mss., 19th century, are holograph copies and originals of vocal and instrumental music and one letter collected by Saul Starr, 1907-1964, physician of Eastchester, New York.

The Starrett mss., 1927-1959, consist of the correspondence of author and journalist Vincent Starrett, 1886-1974, known for his biography The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes and his detective stories.

The Starling mss., 1820-1927, are letters, illustrations, and writings by Hugh Clifford, Joseph Conrad, George Cruikshank, Charles Lever, and William Makepeace Thackeray, collected by Kenyon Law Starling, 1905-1983, businessman, of Dayton, Ohio.

Leo F. Solt, professor emeritus of History and dean of the University Graduate School, taught at the University of Iowa and the University of Massachusetts before joining the Indiana University faculty in 1955. In 1978 he was named dean of the University Graduate School, a position he held until 1987. The collection consists of biographical records, research notes, correspondence, and lecture notes.

The History of the Written Word: Pages from the Past, 2400 BCE-1920 CE, consist of a collection of original leaves from rare books and manuscripts in limited portfolio sets.

The Smith, H.W. mss., 1817-1987, consists of the letters of reformer Hannah Whitall Smith, 1832-1911, her daughters, art historian Mary Berenson, 1864-1945, and relief organizer Alys Whitall Pearsall Russell, 1867-1951, and her granddaughters, suffragist Ray Strachey, 1887-1940, and psychologist Karin Stephen, 1889–1953.

The Smith, Hamilton mss., 1779-1874, consists of the letters and papers of Hamilton Smith, 1804-1875, lawyer and businessman of Louisville, Kentucky, and Cannelton, Indiana.

The Simpson, R. mss., 1743-1876, consists of letters written by author Richard Simpson, 1820-1876, and by members of his family.

The Sieveking mss., 1724-1971, consists of the papers of Lancelot (Lance) de Giberne Sieveking, 1896-1974, author, playwright, and pioneer of BBC radio programming.

The Scott mss., 1817-1937, consists of the papers of Emmet Hoyt Scott, 1842-1924, businessman and mayor of LaPorte, Indiana, his father, Wiley Huntington Scott, 1796-1872, farmer and hotelkeeper of Nineveh, New York, and his son, Emmet Scott, 1873-1937.

In 1836 German immigrants Philip and Maria Sachs and their two children settled in Indianapolis. Over the years they received letters from family and friends in Germany and in other areas of the United States. These letters provide information about conditions in Germany and about the experiences of German immigrants in the United States.

The Rumely, F.S. mss. II, 1841-1955, are largely the personal and business papers of Fanny (Scott) Rumely, 1877- 1979, of LaPorte, Indiana.

The Rumely mss., 1838-1965, are the papers of Edward Aloysius Rumely, 1882-1964, physician, educator, and public relations man, and papers relating to his ancestors. The papers consist of correspondence with prominent people both in Europe and the United States; an autobiography; documents dealing with his arrest for perjury in July, 1918, and the pardon by President Calvin Coolidge on January 19, 1925; material on his many fields of interest; pictures, and printed matter.

The Rawson mss., 1801-1931, are papers of Mrs. Mary Ann (Read) Rawson, (Mrs. William B. Rawson), of Wincobank, near Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.

The Porter mss., 1799-1850, are the papers of Sir Robert Ker Porter, 1777-1842, artist and diplomat, and his sister Jane Porter, 1776-1850, novelist.

The Polke mss., 1809-1868, consist of letters and papers of William Polke, 1775-1843, judge, commissioner for the Michigan road, and perpetrator of the removal of the Potawatomi Indians from their homes and land in Indiana in 1838.

The Poe mss., 1811-1934, contain primarily correspondence written by Edgar Allan Poe to the poet Sarah Helen Whitman, 1803-1878.

The Philomathean Society was one of two major literary societies on campus. It was founded in 1831 and was last listed in the university catalogue in 1893. This collection primarily consists of programs for the group's annual Spring Exhibition with a fairly complete run between 1844 and 1886. Also included in the collection is a series of published speeches and one partial constitution.

The Spain History mss. II, 1493-1870, consist of legal forms, personal wills, governmental papers, and real estate documents relating to 15th-18th century Spain.

The Palmer mss., 1835-1888, consists of the correspondence and papers of Joel Palmer, 1810-1881, superintendent of Indian Affairs in Oregon Territory, 1853-1857, and of his brother, Ephraim Palmer, captain of Company B, 1st regiment, Oregon Infantry.

The Owen mss., 1821-1911, consist mainly of letters and papers of Richard Owen, 1810-1890 (son of Robert Owen), professor at Indiana University, and first president of Purdue University, and his descendants.

Indiana family headed by Robert Owen, who purchased Harmony from the Rappites in Posey County, Indiana, with the intention of establishing a utopian society, New Harmony. Owen's three sons were major players in the introduction of geology, biology, and psychology in Indiana and the United States. Collection includes correspondence, speeches, and publications of Robert Owen and his descendants. Most prominently featured in the collection are Owen's sons David Dale, Richard, and Robert Dale. Some materials are photocopies of manuscripts held by other repositories.

The Orr mss., 1809-1871, are the papers of the Orr family who emigrated from County Tyrone, Ireland, to Monroe County, West Virginia in 1821.

The Nordloh mss. consist of over 100 American and English letters, postcards, autographs, and notes spanning the years 1792-1947.

The Noble mss., 1815-1860, consist of letters to members of the family of Noah Noble, 1794-1844, especially to his son-in-law, Alexander H. Davidson, in relation to the settlement of Noah Noble's estate.

The Niles mss., 1765-1916, are the law office papers and family correspondence of John Barron Niles, 1808-1879, lawyer of LaPorte, Indiana.

The Neely mss., 1839-1924, consist primarily of letters written to Sarah Ann (Prosser) Neely, 1846-1896, during the Civil War.

The Mutis Daza mss., 1568-1936, except for a small portion, were assembled by Eduardo Posada, 1862- , historian and bibliographer, for Camilo Mutis Daza. Included are a number of outstanding items on Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela during the wars of independence.

Chase C. Mooney was a professor of history at Indiana University. After receiving his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1939, Chase Curran Mooney began his teaching career at Brenau College in 1939. In 1946 he joined the history faculty at Indiana University, where he remained until his death in 1973. As a distinguished member of the faculty, Mooney participated in numerous history department committees and successfully worked to bring the Journal of American History to IU in 1963. With research interests focusing upon African Americans, the U.S. Civil War, and the history of the American South, he produced numerous book reviews, articles, and two major monographs, Slavery in Tennessee in 1957 and William H. Crawford, 1772-1834 which was released posthumously in 1974. Mooney's papers contain student files, correspondence, research and manuscripts relating to his publications, including Slavery in Tennessee and William H. Crawford, teaching files, files relating to committees at Indiana University, and subject files all relating primarily to his work as a professor and to his research interests.

The Monroe County Historical Society mss., 1837-1955, consist of documents, correspondence, and articles relating to Monroe County and the Monroe County Historical Society.

The McWhirter, F.T. mss., 1844-1915, consist of letters and papers of Felix Tyree McWhirter, 1853-1915, banker of Indianapolis, Indiana.

The McFarland, Demas Lindley mss., ca. 1812-1849, consist of correspondence concerning the experiences and conduct of Demas Lindley McFarland during the War of 1812, as well as with the Jacksonian controversy over the Second Bank of the United States.

The Maxwell mss., 1811-1852, consists of the papers of David Hervey Maxwell, 1786-1854, physician and trustee of Indiana University.

Frank Curry Mathers was a Chemistry Professor at Indiana University from 1907 until his retirement in 1950. This collection consists of materials associated with both the Mathers family and Frank C. Mathers' career as a Professor of Chemistry at I.U. The collection consists of Mathers' work correspondence, notes, journals, chemistry equations and formulas. The collection also contains Mathers family correspondence, photos, skin cancer research, and various family legal documents.

The Martin, John mss., 1817-1848, consists of drawings by illustrator and engraver John Martin, 1789-1854, as well as an account book of the sales of his engravings and a letter.

The Marks mss., 1800-1953, consists of the notes, correspondence, pictures, maps, newspaper clippings, etc. assembled by Grace Sutherlin Marks, (Mrs. W. Oliver Marks), 1882-1953, of Salem, Indiana.

The Magee mss., 1845-1929, consists of the papers of Rufus Magee, 1845-1929, lawyer, Indiana state senator, and diplomat.

The Logan mss., 1814-1931, consists of the papers of George Washington Logan, 1827-1893, a farmer in Cass County, Indiana.

Lockridge mss. III, circa 1837-2000, consists of the correspondence, unpublished manuscripts, photos, papers, and audio tapes pertaining to the life and work of author Ross Lockridge, Jr., 1914-1948, and the Lockridge family.

The Lindenbaum, Peter mss., ca. 1590-2008, consist of the papers of Dr. Peter Lindenbaum (1938-2010), a former English Professor at Indiana University.

The Leavitt mss., 1846-1849, consist of six letters from George C. Leavitt, 1824-1854, teacher and surveyor, to his parents in New Hampshire, and one letter from his wife Elizabeth to his parents.
