401. Indiana University 1890 Bogus collection, 1890-1945, undated, bulk 1890 .2 Cubic Feet (One flat, oversized enclosure, and one small legal-sized document case.)

Indiana University
In April of 1890, a bogus publication created by members of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity was distributed to the public. The publication criticized several IU faculty members and students using exceedingly foul language. As the authors were originally unknown, University administration opened an investigation which resulted in the expulsion of several of the perpetrators. This collection consists of correspondence from various parties involved with the event, investigative documents, and a copy of the bogus publication itself. The bulk of the collection dates from 1890, but there is some correspondence with Herman B Wells regarding research into these documents dating as late as 1945.

The work of the Admissions Committee was to consider and recommend admissions policies, pre-college guidance procedures, and to act as a Board of Appeals. Consists of minutes of committee meetings, correspondence, notes, and administrative subject files of the chairman of the Admissions Committee, William H. Strain.
 
Alpha Kappa Psi. Beta Gamma Chapter (Indiana University)
The records in this collection document the Indiana University Beta Gamma Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity between the years 1939-1983 with the bulk of the collection being created after 1945. The collection consists of minutes, membership lists, later editions of their constitution and by-laws, chapter songs, president's files, and a limited amount of correspondence within the local chapter and with the national organization.
 
Alpha Pi Zeta (Indiana University)
The Indiana University chapter of the Alpha Pi Zeta social science fraternity was organized in 1925. The purpose of the society was to encourage the investigation and scholarship in the social sciences. Active membership was open to professors, instructors, staff members, and select graduate students who had shown achievement in social sciences. Collection consists of minutes, financial records, correspondence, membership lists, meeting announcements, and constitutions.

The Indiana University Alumni Association was founded in 1854 as an organization through which graduates could contribute to the pursuit of university interests. Members of the Association held semi-annual meetings, first as the Alumni Association and later in separate branches, including the Alumni Council, established in 1913 (later called the Executive Council). This collection consists primarily of the minutes of the IU Alumni Association, Alumni Council, Executive Council, and Board of Managers meetings spanning 1854-2011.

This collection was created from numerous loose dance cards acquired by and held at the IU Archives. The dance cards are from a number of events sponsored by student organizations and other social activities that were held at IU between 1909 and 1954. Each provides space for the women to document their dance partners' names and often provides information about the sponsoring student group, the dance chaperones, and the musicians performing for the event.

Indiana University. Athletics Committee
The "Big Ten" Intercollegiate Faculty Athletics Committee was formed on January 11, 1895. Indiana University became a member of the Committee in 1899. The general purpose of the Committee was to exert more faculty control over athletics. The records of the Athletics Committee comprise 2.6 cubic feet and span 1940-1964. The majority of the records date to John F. Mee's tenure as chairman, 1951-1962, but there are also records from William R. Breneman's tenure, 1943-1951.

The Indiana University Audio-Visual Center (IU-AVC) was a service of the Indiana University Extension Division that produced, collected and distributed educational films and videos to institutions and organizations throughout the United States. The films, videos and all paper documentation that made up this century old film distribution unit of Indiana University was transferred to the IU Libraries in the early 2000's. As part of what is now the core holdings of the IU Libraries Moving Image Archive, in addition to the films and videos that made up the early years of the Archive, the paper teacher's guides that correspond to instructional films and videos spanning the late 1920's into the early 2000's are an important historical record of this history.

Collection consists of the administrative records of the Auditorium manager spanning 1941-1946. The Administration series covers the managerial decisions and other administrative records of the Auditorium between the years 1941 and 1944 and is arranged alphabetically by subject. Included in the Administration series is a Correspondence subseries organized alphabetically. Prominent correspondents include Krauss and Ward G. Biddle who served as Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Union Board Director, and Chairman of the Dedication Committee. The Events series covers all of the performances, conferences and university related events between the years 1941 and 1946, and is arranged in chronological order.

The Auxiliary Services Office oversaw offices and departments at Indiana University that were self-supporting and encompassed the Auditorium, Bookstore, Campus Bus Service, Campus Foods, Communications, Halls of Residence, Indiana Memorial Union Building (IMU), Motor Pool and Parking Operations. Over the years, Auxiliary Services had several name changes. Those reflected in the records of this collection include Auxiliary Services, Business Manager's Office, and Service Enterprises. Records in this collection include, but are not limited to, correspondence, committee files, departmental files, reports and budgets.

Board of Aeons (Indiana University)
The Board of Aeons was established on March 29, 1921 to function as a link between the student body and the administration. It is composed of 8 to 12 students of at least junior standing and meets regularly but informally once or twice a week with the President, Vice-President, Chancellor or other administrative officials. The Board of Aeons records include minutes, agendas, reports, correspondence, and officers' notebooks.

With a history dating back to 1895, the Chemistry library was initially housed in Wylie Hall, however with the completion of the Chemistry building in the 1930s it relocated and remains in that location to this day. The Indiana University College and Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee was established in 1937 to handle course adjustments within the College's curriculum as well as the creation or changes of academic programs within the College. The collection consists primarily of minutes, exhibits, and a card index of curriculum changes spanning the period from its inception in 1937 to 1996.

Frank T. Gucker was the Dean of Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences from 1951-1965. During his tenure as Dean the College of Arts and Sciences tripled in size. He also launched the College's study of foreign areas in 1956 and helped to establish the department of History and Philosophy of Science in 1958. The collection consists of records created and collected by Gucker during his tenure as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Policy Committee of the College and Arts and Sciences was established in 1942 to undertake the investigation of particular issues affecting faculty and students within the College. This group was meant to be a policy-forming, advisory body that determined "both the policies of the College in its relationship with other departments of the University and the general policy of the College itself." The Collection consists of minutes and general documents for this committee, spanning the period from its inception in 1942 to 1998.

Indiana University, Bloomington. Collins Living-Learning Center
Indiana University's Collins Living-Learning Center (LLC) was established in 1972 - one of the first in the country - in the Men's Residence Center (MRC). Eventually the LLC took over the entire MRC and was renamed after IU professor and administrator Ralph L. Collins. It has since expanded to include "The Hill," Brown and Greene, and Hillcrest (apartments for juniors and seniors). The Collins community is intentionally academically diverse, and students pursue majors across the university. Collins is host to a wide variety of programs and events planned through one of many student groups such as the Board of Education Programming (BOEP), Arts Council, Community Council, and the Board of Programmers (BOP), or as student Q projects through CLLC-Q 199: Residential Learning Workshop. The materials in the Collection represent both the administrative and student aspects of the Collins Living-Learning Center.

Indiana University. Comptroller
With the retirement of the Indiana University Bursar in 1936, the Board of Trustees created the new administrative position of University Comptroller to manage the university's financial operation. As the university's business manager, the Comptroller had a number of duties including preparation and control of the budget, handling of student loan funds, collection of gifts and bequests and general charge of the physical plant. Ward Gray Biddle served as the first and only Comptroller because in 1942 the university underwent a reorganization and the Comptroller's duties were assumed by other positions. The collection consists of 2 cubic feet of University Comptroller records spanning 1935-1942.

Jane Fox, a dancer and faculty member of Indiana University, introduced the art of contemporary dance to the Bloomington campus in 1927 with the inception of the Contemporary Dance Program under the auspices of the Physical Education program (renamed Kinesiology in 1989). While it was first considered a women's extracurricular physical fitness program, it quickly evolved into a respected major and minor field. The program's objective was to teach students to use modern dance to convey ideas and feelings through natural movements. This collection includes scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, program booklets, photographs, film, sheet music, and miscellaneous records pertaining to the Program.

The Department of Athletics was officially established by the Board of Trustees in 1933 upon the dismantling of its predecessor, the Athletic Board of Control, which existed as early as 1917. The collection consists of Manager Books for Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country and Track, Football, Gymnastics, Swimming, and Wrestling from 1922-1971.

Chemistry has a long history at Indiana University, first being added to the curriculum in 1829 by then-IU President Andrew Wylie. The majority of this collection is comprised of faculty publications, mostly dating from the 1950s to the late 1970s. It also contains a small number of departmental publications, such as the Association of Indiana University Chemists newsletters, and administrative files related to laboratory safety, chemistry departments at regional campuses, and other departmental affairs.

This collection consists of maps, audio recordings, news reports, advertisements, committee notes, photographs, and story transcripts for the campus ghost walks organized by the Indiana University Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology. The ghost walks are annual tours that feature ghost legends tied to well-known places on campus and the Bloomington, Indiana, area.

The Indiana University Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology was formally established in 2000 through the merging of the Department of Folklore (1978-2000) and the Ethnomusicology Institute (1980-2000) and is the parent department of the IU Folklore Institute and IU Ethnomusicology Institute. This collection contains administrative files, subject files, correspondence, files and audio recordings of the Special Projects unit, grant and budget information, and conference files produced by the department and its affiliated institutes from 1942 through 2010.

The Department of French and Italian at Indiana University was established in 1934, when the Department of Romantic Languages split into French and Italian and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. This collection covers the period 1935-2015 and consists of administrative files, such as annual reports, minutes, and newsletters, as well as faculty files that include articles, newspaper clippings, curricula vitae, correspondence, and other material.

The Department of Political Science was established at Indiana University in 1914 and was known as the Department of Government from 1934 to 1969. The objective of the department and its affiliated institutions (the Institute of Politics, the Institute of Training for Public Service, and the Bureau of Government Research) was to engage students in active studies on political structure and commentary. The collection consists of faculty research publications and select student papers of noteworthy academic and research value. The publications pertain mainly to politics and government within the state of Indiana.

Though history courses were taught at Indiana University as early as the 1820s, a formal department did not exist until 1895, when the Department of History and Political Science was established. In 1914, the Department of History was made an autonomous University unit. The records in this collection date primarily from Leo F. Solt's tenure as Chair of the Department of History and include a range administrative materials, correspondence, and various documents in relation to Department initiatives, coursework, degree programs, and faculty.

The Indiana University Department of Home Economics, established in 1913, taught students "the principles and processes involved in the science and art of homemaking." The department also ran a practice Home Management House, which served as a practical laboratory for students to practice running a house on their own. In January 1987, the department name changed to Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design. The collection consists of documents and audio-visual materials pertaining to the formation and development of the Department and information about the practice house that the department maintained on the Bloomington campus.

Although military training has a long history at Indiana University, the Department of Military Science and Tactics was established in 1917. The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) fell under the auspices of the department and was a compulsory program for all male students at IU until 1964. The Department of Military Science (Reserve Officers Training Corps) records span the years 1918-2000. These records are organized into seven series: Correspondence, Historical information, ROTC organizations, Publications, Subject files, Realia, and Photos and scrapbooks. The bulk of the collection consists of the Organizations and Subject files series. All series except Correspondence are arranged alphabetically.

Philosophy has been taught at Indiana University since its founding, but it was not until 1929 that the Department of Philosophy was officially established as an independent department. This collection consists of administrative records, many having to do with the department's involvement in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation. There are also class descriptions and schedules, departmental reviews, papers relating to the Ewing Essay Prize, staff meeting minutes and agendas, and other miscellaneous records.

Indiana University. Department of Radio and Television
In 1938, Indiana University began to engage in radio activities. A room was set aside for use as a studio and control room, and a radio director and program director were hired. For years, radio classes were taught through several already established departments such as Speech and Journalism. At the Board of Trustees September 20, 1945 meeting, they approved the establishment of a Dept. of Radio as an "unattached" department under the Dean of Faculties. In 1953 it became the Department of Radio and Television within the College of Arts and Sciences and in 1974 the Department of Telecommunications. This collection contains the department chair's records from 1939-1963 and is comprised of correspondence, budgetary information, annual reports, information on various radio and television stations, and subject files. Records span the tenures of chairs Harry Skornia (1942-1953) and Elmer Sulzer (1954-1964).

A student guidance program was established at Indiana University in the fall of 1939 to help incoming students adjust to college life. Herman T. Briscoe served as the director of the department during its short existence, as in 1942 the program and its responsibilities were replaced by the Junior Division. Collection consists of correspondence, budget files, reports, and the director's committee files. Prominent in the collection are lists of faculty advisors and correspondence regarding the advisory services.

The Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance originated in the Department of Speech beginning in 1945. The Department offers courses and degrees in theatre, drama, and contemporary dance. This collection contains administrative records from before and after the Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance had split from the Department of Speech. It also contains records and production materials from the University Theatre, Brown County Playhouse, Indiana Theatre Company, and IU Theatre Circle.

Indiana University, Bloomington. Division of Biological Sciences
Collection consists of 15 cubic feet of records from the departments under the Division of Biological Sciences spanning 1906-1988. The records are organized in a single series, Subject files. Because the records were in great disarray and the original order was unknown, it was decided it was best to simply arrange the records alphabetically rather than attempt to separate out the various departments. Even so, the collection provides a wealth of information on scientific studies at Indiana University, as the collection consists of correspondence, reports, committee files and more, some dating prior to the development of the Division. The Indiana University Extension Division was established in 1912. In 1946, it became part of the Division of Adult Education and Public Services and in 1957, it became the Division of University Extension. Collection consists of correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, and memoranda.

General meetings of the Indiana University faculty began in 1835, to discuss the industriousness of its students, calling student rolls, and hearing reports on the work and standing of each of the students. Disciplinary measures, dismissals, and exams for students were also discussed during many of the meetings throughout the nineteenth century. By the 1920s, the faculty had grown to such a point that it was necessary to create a representative body of the faculty, but the faculty as a whole continued to meet with some regularity. Today the faculty body rarely meet, but may be convened by the IU president, the Secretary of the University Faculty Council, or on petition signed by voting faculty members numbering no less than 5% of all voting faculty members.

The Indiana University Folklore Archives was established in 1956 by Richard M. Dorson of the Indiana University Folklore Institute and grew to comprise 40,000 field collections gathered in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky, before closing in 1990. This collection contains the Folklore Archives' administrative files, special collections of prominent folklorists' research materials, reprints of journal articles, bibliographies, a collection of folksongs, and subject files and index cards on topics that include beliefs, customs, games, jokes, and legends.

The Hungarian-American project was an international undertaking of the Indiana University Folklore Institute between 1981 and 1984. Headed by IU folklorists Linda Dégh and Inta Carpenter, scholars from the United States and Hungary conducted ethnographic fieldwork to identify the uses of ethnicity among Hungarians in Hungary, Hungarian-Americans in the Calumet region of Indiana, and Hungarian-Americans in Chicago. The project led to the conference "Culture, Tradition, Ethnicity," hosted at Indiana University from March 26-28, 1984 and inspired a 1987 conference in Budapest. A special double issue of the Journal of Folklore Research printed many materials from the conference and was published later the same year. Collection consists of records relating to project personnel, fieldwork, and conferences.
 
Indiana University. University Graduate School. Graduate Council
In 1894, Indiana University instituted a standing Committee on Advanced Degrees charged with directing the growing number of students undertaking graduate studies. Formal organization of the Graduate School was authorized by the faculty in 1904, with the continued governance of the Committee until the office of the dean within the IU Graduate School was created in 1908. At that time, the committee emerged as the Administrative Committee and in 1909 became the Graduate Council. As the school's faculty took over the duties of the council in the 1930s, the council was deemed unnecessary and disbanded. However, in the 1950s the Graduate School underwent a reorganization and the Graduate Council was reestablished. The council is still active, meeting monthly during the academic year. Collection consists of memos, proposals, reports, and minutes of the Indiana University Graduate Council.

In 1947, the Indiana University Division of Library Science (DLS) was established as a division within the School of Education with Margaret I. Rufsvold serving as director. In 1966, the Graduate Library School was established as a separate academic unit. In 1980, the name was changed to the School of Library and Information Science. Collection includes correspondence, publications, annual reports, student data, project information, and records related to workshops and conferences held by the Library School throughout the years. The bulk of the records date from Margaret Rufsvold's tenure as director and dean of the program, but the collection does include records from her successors, Charles H. McMullen, who served as acting dean until Bernard Fry was appointed in 1967. Fry served as dean until his retirement in 1980.

Indiana University. Halls of Residence Committee
The Halls of Residence Committee was established in September 1939 with Ward G. Biddle as chairman. It took the place of a former committee in dealing with the planning and construction of new dormitories and also dealt with matters such as living arrangements, fees, and roommate preferences. Collection consists of the minutes of the committee, but also includes reports such as the occupancy percentage reports from 1940-1971.

The first Halls of Residence Library at Indiana University was created in 1940. It was located in the Men's Residence Center (now the Collins Living-Learning Center). The idea for these libraries came from President Herman B Wells and Halls of Residence Director Alice Nelson, who had visited schools in the east and seen these types of libraries being utilized in university settings. At first administered by the libraries, the Halls of Residence Libraries were transferred to Residential Programs and Services in 2001. This collection includes annual reports, subject files, correspondence and student papers written over the years about the libraries.

Hilltop Garden and Nature Center (Bloomington, Ind.)
Founded in 1948, the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center was designed to promote community gardening at Indiana University. From the beginning, Hilltop was jointly sponsored by IU, the city of Bloomington's Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Bloomington Garden Club. Collection includes correspondence, photographs, architectural drawings, scrapbooks, minutes, reports, and publications and records relating to the Hilltop Educational Foundation and Hilltop Garden Council.

The Institute for Urban Transportation was founded in 1969 by Dr. George M. Smerk, a professor of transportation at Indiana University's School of Business (renamed the Kelley School of Business in 1997). The institute aimed to improve public transportation management and policy through education, research, and technical assistance. The collection includes materials published by the institute, including technical handbooks, a newsletter, and reports generated from the institute's consultation studies with various public transportation departments in Indiana and the surrounding states. The collection also includes materials from public transportation-related conferences and workshops conducted in the 1980s and 1990s, as well as administrative files.
 
Indiana University Language Club
The Language Club consisted of faculty members from the language departments as well as other liberal arts departments. Meetings included a presentation by one or two club members or guests, generally on topics of literature or the arts, followed by a group discussion of the presentation, reports on language association meetings members had attended, and discussion of departmental issues. This collection consists of .4 cubic feet of records created by the Indiana University Language Club from 1920-1964. Includes meeting minutes, member and officer lists, reports, and addresses.

The Latino Cultural Center was established at Indiana University in 1973. It is more affectionately known as La Casa. Its purpose was, and continues to be, to achieve through educational and social programs, a greater historical, political and cultural awareness regarding the latine community. The collection consists of records created by the Latino Cultural Center while under the direction of the Office of Latino Affairs, documents from student organizations, such as Latinos Unidos at Indiana University (LUIU), and other documents realted to the history and interests of the Latino Cultural Center including correspondence, publications, events, annual reports, and subject files.

Cecil K. Byrd was a long-time member of the Indiana Universities Libraries. During the course of his career, he held the titles of Curator of Rare Books and Special Collections, Associate Professor, Assistant Director of Libraries, University Librarian, and finally professor and librarian emeritus. The collection consists of administrative records and correspondence related to Byrd's career at Indiana University.

Robert A. Miller served as the Director of Libraries at Indiana University from March 1942 to August 1972. Under his administration, the Lilly Library and Main Library [now Herman B Wells Library] were built. Miller had a significant impact upon the design of both libraries, completely designing the interior of the Lilly. The collection consists of administrative records and correspondence related to Miller's tenure as director.

Since its inception, the Government Publications Department (GPD) at Indiana University has aimed to offer free access of government publications and other information to the general public. The GPD, now known as Government Information and Kent Cooper Services, houses records from city, county, state and federal governments, as well as many publications from foreign governments and international organizations. The collection consists of correspondence, reports, statistics, policy changes, and other information regarding GPD administration.

The Indiana University Libraries' publications consists of publications the Department has published during the period from 1924-2012 including Lilly Library publications.

The Men's Faculty Club was established at Indiana University in 1912. The goals of the Men's Faculty Club were to organize and implement social and cultural events for members. In 1959 the group became part of a new organization called the University Club, which acted as an umbrella organization for four smaller Indiana University clubs, including the Men's Faculty Club. Starting in 1989, however, all programs organized by the four clubs have been listed under the rubric of the University Club and have been open to all members of the University Club. The collection consists of by-laws, correspondence, meeting minutes, subject files, and financial records.

Indiana University. Office of Military Information
The Office of Military Information was created 1 July 1942 at Indiana University to advise students, parents, faculty members and the general public about war service opportunities and regulations. Collection consists of subject files arranged alphabetically and spans the years 1942-1946. The collection includes correspondence with military and university personnel, directives from Washington, D.C. and regional military offices, and information on housing, courses, and instructors.
 
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Zeta Epsilon Chapter (Indiana University)
Omega Psi Phi is a predominantly African-American fraternity. The Zeta Epsilon chapter was chartered at Indiana University in 1947. The collection consists of records created and collected by the Zeta Epsilon chapter and includes program materials, minutes and reports from national, district, and local meetings.
 
Indiana University. Office of the Vice-President and Treasurer
The Peru Project was sponsored by the Indiana University Office of the Vice-President and Treasurer through a grant from the Ford Foundation. It focused on the modernization of the National University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru and emphasized the restructuring of its business and operating procedures. The contract began in 1964 and was suspended around 1966. Collection includes reports and observations gathered from administrators' trips to Peru and South America, plans for improvements to the University of San Marcos, budget information, and correspondence between project participants at both universities.
 
Indiana University, Bloomington. Physical Plant
The Indiana University Physical Plant was the central department for university buildings and grounds upkeep from 1959-2015. Prior to 1959 the Physical Plant was part of the Department of Buildings and Grounds. In 2015 the Physical Plant was renamed Facility Operations. This collection includes annual reports and newsletters issued by the department from 1938-2007.

An all-female organization, the Pleiades was founded on Indiana University Bloomington's campus on September 24, 1921. The group initially was formed to organize various social events but expanded and became an established organization on campus after its initial successes. Membership was limited to 25 women who excelled both academically and socially. Collection consists of one minute book documenting activities and members from 1926-1943.

Indiana University. President
The first president of what was then Indiana College was elected by the Board of Trustees in 1829. Herman B Wells was named interim president in 1937 and president in 1938, a position he held until 1962. Collection consists primarily of correspondence, reports, and publications. A particularly rich collection, correspondence is to and from Wells and other high ranking university administrators. The files are arranged alphabetically.

Indiana University Publications (Firm)
The Indiana University Office of Publications is one of the oldest non-academic offices on campus. Its records date primarily from the tenure of Ivy Leone Chamness, who served as Head Editor of University Publications from 1917-1952. Collection includes correspondence, manuscripts, and newspaper clippings. Prominent in the collection are edited manuscripts of the two volume History of Indiana University written by Burton Dorr Myers and James A. Woodburn.
 
Indiana University School of Dentistry
The Indiana Dental College was founded in 1879 in Indianapolis for the purpose of increasing the standards of dentistry in Indiana. Indiana University purchased the college in 1925, and in 1933 moved it to its current location on West Michigan Street in Indianapolis. The collection consists of minutes of the executive committee, collected histories of the school, lists of alumni, and correspondence.

Indiana University, Bloomington. School of Journalism
The School of Journalism at Indiana University was established within the College of Arts and Sciences in 1911 as the Department of Journalism. The name was changed in 1974 to the School of Journalism, and it became an independent school in the IU system in 1986. This collection consists of records collected by the Office of the Chair primarily during the tenure of John E. Stempel, who was chairman from 1938-1968.

Indiana University, Bloomington. School of Journalism
The School of Journalism had its beginnings at Indiana University when the first journalism course was offered in 1891. A Department of Journalism was established in the College of Arts and Sciences in 1911, and in 1974 the department became the School of Journalism. The School of Journalism has had many well-known and successful graduates, including the famous World War II journalist Ernie Pyle. This collection consists of records of the Department/School of Journalism collected and compiled by Marjorie Blewett, an administrative assistant in Journalism from 1965-1980 and placement director from 1980-1990. The records within the collection consist largely of the correspondence and other administrative files generated by the directors or deans of the Department/School of Journalism. The majority of the records were generated by or sent to John Stempel and Richard Gray during the years 1938-1984, but Marjorie Blewett also contributes some her own personal records.
 
Indiana University. Sesquicentennial Committee
Indiana University celebrated its 150th anniversary in 1970. Leading up to this anniversary, a Sesquicentennial Office for special programs and planning and Birthday Fund for fundraising operated. These files contain the subject files pertaining to planning and programming, as well as promotional materials, publications, and other extraneous materials related to the Sesquicentennial and the University.

Health service for Indiana University students originated around the turn of the twentieth century as part of the university's efforts to contain infectious diseases. The first formal Health Center was constructed in 1939 and was replaced by a larger facility in 1965, which has seen a number of renovations since. This collection consists of correspondence, memos, proposals, reports, organizational charts, policy information, news clippings, and informational pamphlets ranging from the late 1920s-early 1990s.

Indiana University. Student Religious Cabinet
The Student Religious Cabinet existed as a student group at Indiana University from 1938 to at least 1951. The Student Religious Cabinet's purpose was to promote interest in religion, bring about fellowship among students of diverse religious affiliations, and sponsor activities meant to counteract religious and racial tensions. The collection contains meeting notes and attendance records from 1938 to 1951 and publications including The Voice of Religion on Indiana University Campus, Communique, pamphlets from a War-Time Victory for Brotherhood program held from 1943 until 1945, and the Campus Home Front , another student publication concerned with the war effort, published in 1943.

Indiana University. Student Senate
The Indiana University Student Senate was formed in 1948 due in large part to the influence of IU President Herman B Wells. The Student Senate was charged with upholding the ideals proclaimed in the Student Government Constitution. This collection is predominantly comprised of administrative files such as meetings minutes, bills and resolutions, and subject files covering the period 1938 through 1979.
 
Indiana University. Department of Sociology
The first courses in professional social work were taught at Indiana University in the Department of Economics and Sociology in 1911. In 1935, the Training Course for Social Work was established as a division of the Department of Sociology. The program offered graduate level courses in hospital social work, probation, parole, public relief, child welfare, and institutional work. In 1942, the Training Course for Social Work proposed an accelerated war service program that could be completed in one year and four months. The collection consists of departmental budget ledgers, correspondence, faculty meeting minutes, and information pertaining to field and extension service.
 
Indiana University, Bloomington. University Division
The University Division was established at Indiana University Bloomington in 1942, under the name of Junior Division. Originally created as a response to wartime conditions, the University Division currently serves as an academic advising system for freshman and sophomore students who have not yet selected a major. The collection consists primarily of records from Sally J. Dunn's tenure (2000-2007) as Dean of the University Division and includes correspondence, records related to University Division programs, brochures, reports, administrative files, advising files, and publications.

The Water Resources Research Center was established in 1963 with the goal of integrating the diverse water research activities of Indiana University and coordinating them with the water programs of state and federal agencies, other academic institutions and private organizations. The Center's research, cooperation with other water resources organizations, and its administration are represented in the contents of this collection.

The collection consists of meeting minutes and reports, subject files and scrapbooks.

This collection consists of 82 scrapbooks produced by the residents of Forest Hall, Memorial Hall East, Memorial Hall West, Morrison Hall, Sycamore Hall, and Walnut Hall, most of which were women's residence halls located in the Agnes E. Wells Quadrangle on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington, Indiana. The scrapbooks were created between 1925 and 1959 and contain photographs of dormitory residents, residential counselors, and various locations on the Bloomington campus. Many scrapbooks also contain memorabilia and ephemera such as dance cards, invitations, correspondence, event programs, sports schedules, newspaper clippings and other items related to campus events and activities that were either sponsored or hosted by the dormitories or attended by the women residing there.

Young Men's Christian Association (Indiana University)
The Red Book was a student and faculty directory published annually by the Indiana University Young Men's Christian Association from 1892-1971. In addition to contact information, the books covered a variety of topics over the years, including information about the YMCA and other campus organizations, academic calendars, tips for new students, local business advertisements, and maps of Bloomington and the IU campus.
 
Y.W.C.A. Indiana U.
The Indiana University chapter of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) was founded in 1886 by Mrs. Jenny Bryan, sister to future IU president William Lowe Bryan. Open to all interested women in the Bloomington community, the YWCA aimed to encourage the personal development, religious growth, social sensitivity, and civic responsibility of its members. It sought to provide leadership training in the many areas of life and to provide volunteer leaders for community service in Monroe County. This collection consists of various publications, administrative material, financial records, and scrapbooks created by the organization from 1903 through 1973.
 
Inter-Institutional Study Committee (Ind.)
In July of 1949, the Inter-Institutional Study Committee, also known as the Four State Schools Committee, was created in response to a new law passed by the Indiana Legislation requesting that the four state schools submit a formula by which the state funds would be divided amongst the institutions. The committee was comprised of representatives from Indiana University, Purdue University, Ball State Teachers College, and Indiana State Teachers College. The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, preliminary studies, raw data, and five bound reports.
 
Chamness, Ivy Leone
Ivy Chamness was a teacher, editor and a writer, and was actively involved on many committees. Her papers demonstrate that her life revolved around education through copies of her editorials, her personal correspondence, minutes from various committees upon which she served, journals from her travels, and various documents relating to her work here at IU pre and post-retirement.
 

496. Jack Gibson Collection, 1942-2000 19 document cases (12 linear feet)

Gibson, Jack
Jack "The Rapper" Gibson was a pioneer in Black radio, as well as an innovator, a leader, and a mentor to many in the radio and music industries. His work as a Black radio deejay spanned the early days of Black radio in the 1940s through the Civil Rights Movement, and included stints at WERD-Atlanta, WLOU-Louisville, WMBM-Miami, WCIN-Cincinnati, and WABQ-Cleveland. After retiring from radio in 1961, he became a successful music industry executive working for Motown, Decca, and Stax Records. In 1976, he launched the industry magazine Jack the Rapper, the oldest Black trade publication targeted to radio, and for the next twenty years organized the annual "Jack the Rapper's Family Affair," a Black music convention drawing generations of performers and music industry executives. His professionalism, continuous fight for racial equality and justice, and endearing human qualities made him a legend in the industry. This collection documents his long career in radio and music through personal correspondence, clippings, memorabilia, photographs, publicity materials, airchecks, interviews, lecture materials, and over 500 issues of his trade magazine "Jack the Rapper's Mello Yello."
