This series contains papers, application packets, and audiovisual materials related to the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame's 1993 Sidney Poitier Fellowship competition. Applications to the program include written film proposals, scripts, sample works on videocassette, and other materials submitted by film and video makers competing for fellowship awards.

This collection contains a wide array of materials documenting the history and activities of the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame (BFHFI). The materials were collected and/or created by Mary Perry Smith from the time immediately predating the BFHFI's first Black History Month celebration in 1974 to the efforts of its remaining supporters to revitalize the organization following its final film festival in 2003. The Smith, L.P. mss., 1868-1946, consists primarily of the correspondence and writings of essayist Logan Pearsall Smith, 1865-1946.

Johnnie Rutland Smith was the wife of Henry Lester Smith, former professor and dean of the Indiana University School of Education. This collection consists primarily of papers associated with Johnnie Rutland Smith's participation in the 1955 White House Conference on Education and the 1960 White House Conference on Children and Youth.

The Smith, J.A. mss., 1864-1865, consists of the Civil War papers of farmer John Archibald Smith, 1845-1922.

Henry Lester Smith was a long-time professor and administrator at the Indiana University School of Education. In addition to teaching and other administrative positions, Smith served as the dean of the School of Education from 1916 until his retirement in 1946. Throughout his life and career, Smith served in a variety of other roles including as Superintendent of Schools in the Canal Zone, as an active member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, as chair of the local Red Cross chapter, as an active member of the National Education Association, and as Secretary-General of the World Federation of Education Associations. This collection consists largely of correspondence relative to his national and international educational work, materials developed in connection with his teaching, and research materials and writings in his main interest areas of international education, school administration, and character education.

The Smith, H.W. mss., 1817-1987, consists of the letters of reformer Hannah Whitall Smith, 1832-1911, her daughters, art historian Mary Berenson, 1864-1945, and relief organizer Alys Whitall Pearsall Russell, 1867-1951, and her granddaughters, suffragist Ray Strachey, 1887-1940, and psychologist Karin Stephen, 1889–1953.

The Smith, C. mss., 1929-1978, consists of of the papers of educator, consultant, musicologist, and journalist Carleton Smith, 1908-1984.

The Smith, Annette mss. 1964-2004, consists of the papers of Annette Smith, 1924-, Professor Emeritus of Literature at the California Institute of Technology.

The Slocum mss., 1955-2012, consists of the papers of Jerry Slocum, 1931-, and the Slocum Puzzle Foundation.

The collection includes interviews, news broadcasts and lectures on puzzles as well as selections from various International Puzzle Party conference programs.

Indiana University alumnus John W. Sloan was born in 1915 in Oak Park, Illinois. He graduated with a B.S. in chemistry from IU in 1939, and completed two semesters of graduate study in chemistry from 1946-1947. He served in the United States Army from 1941-1945, where he reached the rank of Captain, later becoming a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve. This small collection includes chemistry and physics laboratory notebooks and coursework from Sloan's time as an undergraduate and graduate student. The collection also contains five photographs Sloan took of the IU campus when he was an undergraduate.

The Hunt mss., 1838-1845, consists of letters written by John Sloan, 1816-1898, physician of New Albany, Indiana, and his wife Caroline (Hunt) Sloan, 1810-1887, to Caroline's family in Maine, relating primarily to their emigration to Indiana.

The Skinner, Robert E. mss., 1966-2013, consists of the scrapbooks, ephemera, theatre programs, and writings of author Robert E. Skinner, 1948-.

The Skinner, Robert E. mss. II, 1983-2005, consists of drafts of detective novels and scholarly works on hard-boiled crime fiction by Robert E. Skinner (b. 1948).

The Siurek mss., 1939-1946, consist of letters from Walter R. Siurek of the U.S. Coast Guard to his girlfriend Patricia Kurzyden in East Chicago, Indiana.

The Sipper mss., 1973-2010, consists of the correspondence and business records of Ralph Bruno Sipper, 1932-, an antiquarian bookseller specializing in modern first editions.

Denis Sinor was a faculty member of Indiana University in the Uralic and Altaic Program (now the Department of Central Eurasian Studies) from 1962 to 2011. Sinor founded the Department of Uralic and Altaic Studies in 1965 and the Asian Studies Research Institute for Inner Asian Studies (now the Sinor Research Institute for Inner Asian Studies [RIFIAS]), both of which he served as director for until his retirement from IU in 1986. He was active in many organizations during his tenure at Indiana University, most significantly the Journal of Asian History (JAH), Permanent International Altaistic Conference (PIAC), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and National Defense Education Act (NDEA). This collection consists of Sinor's correspondence with various organizations, IU, and personal contacts.

The Sims mss., 1961-2000, consists of the correspondence, invoices, and catalogues of bookseller George Sims, 1923-1999.

The Simpson, R. mss., 1743-1876, consists of letters written by author Richard Simpson, 1820-1876, and by members of his family.

The Simpson mss., 1957-1958, consists of versions of A Resounding Tinkle by Norman Frederick Simpson, 1919-2011, author.

The collection consists primarily of programs, newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, awards, correspondence, memorabilia, posters, clothing, audio recordings and video related to Marietta Simpson's career.

This collection spans the active career (1964-) of Evelyn Simpson-Curenton as well as holds materials highlighting the renowned Singing Simpsons, and Evelyn's sister, Joy Simpson. It consists of CDRs, LPs, DVDs, and home-video tapes; along with several concert programs, photographs, personal letters and more.

The Sillitoe mss. III, 1980-2010, consists of the papers of writer Alan Sillitoe, 1928-2010, with emphasis on the last three decades of his career.

Founded in 1886 as an honorary society for science and engineering, today Sigma Xi is an international research society that strives to promote the health of the scientific enterprise and honor scientific achievement. The Indiana University chapter of Sigma Xi was chartered in 1904. The collection consists of nomination forms, minutes, correspondence, by-laws, and constitutions. Also included is a report drawn up circa 1974 entitled "Indiana University chapter: the Society of Sigma Xi, 1904-1974."

This collection consists of an incomplete run of 42 issues of the Crimson Bull, a student humor magazine published by the Indiana University chapter of Sigma Delta Chi from 1947-1956. The IU chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, a professional journalistic fraternity, was established in 1914.

Consists of personal papers of William J. Siffin. There are three series: Correspondence, 1962-1993, containing both incoming and outgoing correspondence; Publications, 1962-1990, containing articles and his book The legislative council in the American states; and Teaching, 1960-1991, containing materials from his classes and files for the graduate students he advised.

The collection includes materials by and about Sieveking, plus memorabilia.

The Sieveking mss., 1724-1971, consists of the papers of Lancelot (Lance) de Giberne Sieveking, 1896-1974, author, playwright, and pioneer of BBC radio programming.

William Siegmann was the leading expert on the arts in Liberia and Sierra Leone. His collection contains an exhaustive lists of resources, both primary and secondary, pertaining to the arts, culture, language, and history of Liberia and Sierra Leone. Also included are materials from his various projects, espeically those from his "Aesthetics of Power: African Art Along the Windward Coast." Correspondence with various museums and universities, personal and teaching materials are also in this collection.

Roy Sieber was a historian of African art who taught at Indiana University Bloomington from 1962 through 1983. Having been the first person to receive a degree in African art in the United States, Sieber was the creator of the study of African art history in the United States. This collection contains prints of his black and white photographs of African art in use and on display, slides of African art in museums, and annotated bibliographies written by his students exploring specific aspects of art in Africa.

The Shorthouse mss., 1884-1897, consists of the letters of Joseph Henry Shorthouse, 1834-1903, author, to John Dowden, bishop of Edinburgh, 1840-1910, and William Showell Rogers, 1855-1899, solicitor.

William "Bill" Shirk Poorman (born 1945) is a retired American escape artist, actor, entrepreneur, and longtime Indianapolis radio personality. He uses his middle name (also his mother's maiden name), Shirk, as his professional surname. He is frequently billed as the "Modern Day Houdini" for his elaborate and death-defying stunts. Between 1976 and 1980, Poorman set eight world records, including the fastest escape from a straitjacket and the fastest jail break. His work as an escape artist inspired him to write, produce, and star as a fictionalized version of himself in the 1983 film "The Escapist". This collection contains material related to the production of "The Escapist" and Poorman's career as an escape artist.

The Sherwood mss., 1917-1972, consists of the letters, diary, and newspaper clippings of Elmer William Sherwood, 1896-1979, author and insurance executive.

The Sherriff mss., 1931-1951, consists of letters from playwright Robert Cedric Sherriff, 1896-1975, to the League of Dramatists division of the Society of Authors.

The Sherriff mss. II, 1929-1957, consist of letters from playwright Robert Cedric Sherriff, 1896-1975, to writer Vernon Bartlett, 1894-1983.

The Shepro mss., 1978-1989, consists of correspondence, appraisals, and additional documents relating to the horological collection of laywer and businessman Warren Shepro, 1926-2000.

Collection consists primarily of interview transcripts, program transcripts, and artist publicity materials used in the production of the Westwood One Radio programs Special Edition, That's Country Music, Rock Chronicles, My Top Ten, and History of Rock 'n Roll. It also contains materials from various specials including programs on Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, and the Rolling Stones.

The Shawn mss., 1963-1983, consists of correspondence between The New Yorker editor William Shawn, 1907-1992, and the magazine's film critic Penelope Gilliatt, 1932-1993.

The Shaw, G.W. mss., 1850-1873, consists of the papers of George Washington Shaw, 1831-1912, lawyer.

The Shawe-Taylor mss., 1929-1995, consists of the papers of Desmond Christopher Shawe-Taylor, 1907-1995.

The Reynolds mss., 1912-1925, consist of positive photostats of letters, notes, and telegrams from George Bernard Shaw, 1856-1950, playwright, to Paul Revere Reynolds, 1864-1944, literary agent, who represented Shaw in the United States.

The Shapiro mss., 1940-1962, consists of the writings of poet Karl Jay Shapiro, 1913-2000, and his correspondence with poet Theodore Roethke, 1908-1963.

The Shanks mss., 1928-2006, consists of the papers of television executive Bob Shanks, 1932-2020, and photographer Ann Zane (Kushner) Shanks, 1922-2015.

The Shamroy mss., 1940-1963, consists of letters to cinematographer Leon Shamroy, 1901-1974, and his first wife, Audrey Mason Shamroy, 1917-1991, from painter and sculptor Beniamino Bufano, 1890-1970, Israeli artist Bezalel (Lilak) Schatz, 1912-1978, author Henry Miller, 1891-1980, and Miller's third wife, Martha Lepska Miller, 1923-2017.

Barbara Shalucha founded the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center in Bloomington, Ind. in 1948 and served as its director until 1986. Shalucha first came to Indiana University as an instructor in the Botany Department. She was hired for her special perspective on applied botany which incorporated youth involvement. The Barbara Shalucha papers comprise 7 cubic feet and span 1935-1992. The collection includes correspondence, speeches, publications, subject files, and teaching materials.

Robert H. Shaffer was affiliated with Indiana University for nearly 40 years. He served as Dean of Students from 1955 to 1969 before returning to faculty work full-time. This collection encompasses Robert and Marge Shaffer's personal collection of scrapbooks, with many of them containing newspaper clippings from his time as Dean and photographs from his travels across the world.

The collection consists of articles, clippings, and interviews compiled during research for Seymour's book, Luther: The Life and Longing of Luther Vandross (2004), and subsequent research on topics related to R&B musicians, black music genres, the black gay community and gay musicians. Also included are audiocassettes containing interviews conducted by Seymour with Luther Vandross, various R&B musicians and record company personnel, as well as a large collection of mixtapes and commercial CDs.

The materials in the Peter Sevareid Papers include correspondence, one of Sevareid's publication drafts, and conferences programs and papers. It also consists of research materials, including publications, reports, news clippings and interviews from the Liberian Customary Law Project.

The Senour mss., 1919-1928, consists of letters from Professor of English Frank C. Senour, 1871-1928, to Indiana University alumna and benefactor Ruth Norman Halls, 1898-1990.

The Senhouse mss., 1945-1955, consists of letters to publisher Roger Senhouse, 1899-1970, relating chiefly to the publication of Occasional Memorandums (Millhouse Press, 1950), written by Thomas Gray, 1716-1771.

The Sendak mss., 20th cent., consists of the pen and ink, wash and pencil drawings of Maurice Sendak, 1928-2012, illustrator.

The Sembene mss., 1956-2008, consists of the correspondence, photographs, writings, professional files, film scripts, and related material of filmmaker and author Ousmane Sembene.

The Secker mss., 1894-1969, consists primarily of letters to publisher Martin Secker, 1882-1978, from various authors, illustrators, and acquaintances with whom he had business dealings.

Thomas Sebeok (1920-2001) was an internationally renowned semiotician who taught at Indiana University from 1943 to 2001. This collection documents Sebeok's career at Indiana University and contains correspondence, subject files, publications, research and grant materials, and departmental and committee records.

The Seaver mss. II, 1961–1975, consists of the papers of translator, editor, and publisher Richard W. Seaver, 1926–2009.

The Seaver mss., 1969–1974, consists of the correspondence and documents from the files of Richard Seaver, 1926-2009, the American publisher of Octavio Paz, 1914-1998, concerning the translation and publication of Paz's Alternating Current (translated 1973) and Conjunctions and Disjunctions (translated 1974).

The Scrimgeour mss., 1968-1981, consists of the correspondence and manuscripts of author Gary James Scrimgeour, 1934-2011, primarily relating to the writing and publication of his first novel, A Woman of Her Times (1982).

Myrtle Scott was a professor of educational psychology at Indiana University from 1970 until her retirement in 2002. Her primary teaching responsibilities were in the Human Development program with a focus on child development, while her research interests centered on developmental and ecological psychology. Scott's papers include biographical files, teaching files, publications, and research notes with some correspondence, with the bulk of the collection consisting of Scott's publications and research notes from 1965-2003.

The Scott mss., 1817-1937, consists of the papers of Emmet Hoyt Scott, 1842-1924, businessman and mayor of LaPorte, Indiana, his father, Wiley Huntington Scott, 1796-1872, farmer and hotelkeeper of Nineveh, New York, and his son, Emmet Scott, 1873-1937.

The Scott mss. II, 1854-1906, consists of the papers of Emmet Hoyt Scott, 1842-1924, businessman and mayor of LaPorte, Indiana, and his brother, Arthur Lee Scott, 1845-1878, businessman.

The Breaking Away mss., 1978-1982, consist of production materials, press kits, and ephemera related to the film Breaking Away and its international versions.

The Schwartz mss., 1990-2001, consists of Russian-to-English translations by Marian Schwartz, 1951-, of works by Nina Berberova, 1901-1993, Vasily Peskov, 1930-2013, Edvard Radzinsky, 1936-, and Solomon Volkov, 1944-.

The Schulte mss., 1967-1992, consists of the correspondence and translations of poet and translator Rainer Schulte, 1937- .

Karl F. Schuessler graduated at Indiana University in 1947 with a Ph.D. in sociology. Soon after his graduation, he joined the faculty at Indiana University, where he remained until his retirement in 1985. This collection contains Schuessler's published articles, manuscripts, correspondence, and subject files.

The Rihm mss., 1899-1916, consist of correspondence from violinist Henry Schradieck to pianist Alexander Rihm.

Frederic C. Schmidt was a professor of chemistry at Indiana University from 1947 until his retirement in 1969. This collection consists of materials relating to Schmidt's teaching endeavors, including lecture notes, syllabi, assignments and exam questions for some of the chemistry courses he taught. It also contains materials pertaining to the I.U. Summer Institute for High School Teachers of Chemistry.

The Schliemann mss., 1869-1890, consists of correspondence and a diary of Heinrich Schliemann, 1822-1890, merchant and archaeologist.

The Schlechter mss., 1982-2006, consists of sketches, trials, and mock-ups of the artist book of Samuel Beckett's Mahood created by Susanne Schlechter, 1961-.

The Scammon mss., 1933-1978, consists of the papers of Richard Lewis Scammon, 1914-1979, Professor of Theatre and Drama at Indiana University from 1946 to 1979.

The Thrasher mss. consists predominantly of letters and cards received by Jane Thrasher from Robert Saulet, ca. 1938-1953, with four letters from or written on behalf of Charlton Heston, 2004-2006.

The Sassoon, R. mss., 1950-2004, consists of writings and photographs of paintings by writer and painter Richard Sassoon, 1934-2017.

The Sartre mss., 1948-1949, consists of letters, telegrams, news clippings, and other documents relating to the English adaptation and New York premiere of Jean-Paul Sartre's Les Mains Sales at the Mansfield Theatre in 1948.

The Sarmiento mss., 1862–1949, consists of letters and ephemera of Argentinean activist, politician, and writer Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, 1811-1888, and his family.

The Sargent mss., 1917, consists of letters written to bibliographer, author, and editor George Henry Sargent, 1867-1931, concerning the book Americana Ebrietatis (1917).
